Granting You A Second Life

Li Xiuying continued to stare at Chen Wei as he looked down at her with a frustrated expression.

Li Xiuying sighed internally 'What was I thinking?'

In her past life, Li Xiuying didn't know if she truly loved Chen Wei maybe it was a type of love but not romantic in nature. She just craved companionship and he was after all her fiance and to her marriage was for life.

She tried her best to make him happy. She made time for him, helped his family with the hospital, helped him further his career. Whatever he asked of her, she would fulfill. Clearly, her sacrifices weren't enough though. He still chose the sickly sweet and selfish Li Yu Yan.

She wasn't completely clueless about what was going on. She witnessed Chen Wei and Li Yu Yan growing closer and closer in an inappropriate way. She had once confronted him about it, Chen Wei just got angry with her for questioning his "loyalty" and that's when their relationship developed into something even worse. He started growing even colder and indifferent towards her.

His requests came in thick and fast and became more unreasonable. He once asked her to perform surgeries back to back from 6 am to 6 am with only a one hour break which she had to use to teach a group of 1st-year residents. But that was nothing compared to the cruelty she had suffered at his and Li Yu Yan's hands on Saturday 13th.

Li Xiuying finally spoke: "You're asking why a doctor is in a hospital?"

Chen Wei froze. 'What's wrong with Xiuying today? What's with her attitude?'

Chen Wei: "What I meant was why are you out when you should be at home? Li Yu Yan told me you were unwell." His voice turned soft whenever he mentioned Li Yu Yan's name.

Li Xiuying raised an eyebrow: "Oh, you didn't think to visit me even when you heard I had fallen ill."

Chen Wei faltered a little: "I, well, I was busy, you know that my family and I have recently taken over a hospital. I've been busy running around sorting out the new reforms and guidelines. You should be more understanding of your future husband otherwise maybe our wedding won't take place."

Chen Wei sneered at her internally 'Do you really think I care about you? You're nothing but a scalpel to wield for my family's hospital.'

Li Xiuying chuckled to herself. 'Future husband? Well, my dear fiance, I will show you all the love you showed me in my past life.'

Li Xiuying: "I'm sorry..."

Chen Wei had a smug expression on his face as he heard Li Xiuying apologize like she always did.

He cut in: "My family and I want you to come and work at our hospital starting next week. Uncle Li has already given the okay. I'll meet up with you tomorrow at 3 at Black Coffee Café to discuss your rota. Make sure you're on time. Oh, and one more thing, tomorrow you'll be operating on the director of Northwest's University's medical program, don't mess it up for Yu Yan. This is her chance to fulfill her potential and become a brilliant doctor."

Chen Wei reassured himself 'I just have to make it through this weekend then I can stop pretending to even tolerate this woman and can be engaged to my sweet Yu Yan.'

Li Xiuying: "If you had let me finish speaking this would have been less awkward for you. I'm sorry but I think you may be suffering from some sort of delusion. My psychiatry qualification doesn't equip me to deal with the magnitude of your delusion, so I can't help you with it. You and I stopped having an engagement when you started sleeping with my dear cousin. I won't be working in your family's little hospital either, you wouldn't be able to afford my time. If there's nothing else then I'll be on my way."

Chen Wei was a loss for words. He went to grab Li Xiuying's arm. "Wait, how, how did you find out about..."

Li Xiuying sensed Chen Wei grabbing out for her wrist, she dodged his hand and turned around to face him again. Chen Wei took back his hand which was clutching at air.

Li Xiuying: "About you and Li Yu Yan your darling wife? I saw it with the organs on my face that allow me to see. If you wanted to keep it a secret you shouldn't have slept with her in my bed. You should be happy, now you can happily marry Li Yu Yan."

Chen Wei thought that when the engagement with Li Xiuying came to an end he would feel like dancing on the rooftops, but for some reason, all he felt was a sense of loss.

He frowned 'Why am I not happy?'

Chen Wei looked into Li Xiuying's eyes which were blazing with fury 'I never noticed how dazzling they were before.'

Chen Wei felt it was a mistake to let her go: "I'm sorry, maybe we could try..."

Li Xiuying: "Do you think 'sorry' can make any difference? It's just a word. One word against a thousand actions." She didn't think it was possible that she lost even more respect for the man in front of her.

Li Xiuying couldn't stomach spending any more time with this animal. She walked away with a skip in her step. Li Xiuying felt like a giant burden had been lifted from her shoulders. 'I still have so much to do. I have to make a few calls tonight. Don't worry Li Yu Yan, Li Wang, Li Mei Wu you're time will come.'

For now, Li Xiuying felt it was fine to allow herself to enjoy her small victory.

Doctor's Coffee room

All the doctor's involved in tonight's management of the Xǔ family were nervously awaiting Dr. Li.

the tension in the air was palpable.

"Do you think we're all going to be fired?"

"I messed up when I did the initial assessment!"

"I can't afford to lose this job, I have to look after my parents."

"Dr. Li could probably handle the situation tonight even if it was just her on her own."

"I saw the consultants and some of the registrars walk into the A&E department as we were leaving. It would have helped if they had actually shown up when the chaos was happening!"

The door handle turned, everyone held their breath's as the door slowly opened.
