14. The Charm of Roast Chicken

Translator: Annsmiley

“Aaahhh! It was burnt!”

Ji Ran looked at the burnt skewer of barbecued mushrooms in his hand, feeling awful. In modern times, he was a grill master. Perhaps he wasn’t the best grill chef ever, but the food he barbecued deserved a thumbs-up. He never imagined that one day his reputation would be ruined by a skewer of mushrooms.

“Focus on barbecuing the mushrooms and stop staring at me, okay?” Lu Zhen took the burnt mushrooms from Ji Ran, threw them away, and handed him another skewer of mushrooms. “Don’t feel bad about it. We’ve got plenty of them here. Just do it right this time.”

Ji Ran sniffed, took the skewer, sprinkled it with salt, and put it on the grill.

“I was just curious. I’ve always thought that ghosts, like immortals, are otherworldly. I didn’t expect you to be just like us humans. What is that idiom again? You can hunt and you can cook. You’re a jack of all trades!”

The more Ji Ran thought about what he just said, inexplicably, the more he felt like laughing. So there he was, staring at the roasted sizzling mushrooms and laughing stupidly.

Not knowing why Ji Ran was laughing, Lu Zhen just looked at him and he didn’t ask him why. He handed Ji Ran the perfectly grilled chicken, “It’s done. Here you are.”

Ji Ran looked at the roast chicken and then at the mushrooms in his hand. Without hesitation, he put the mushrooms into Lu Zhen’s hand, took the roast chicken, ripped one drumstick off it and ate it.

He had just started eating when he heard someone knocking on the door.

“Sister! Sister, are you in there?”

Compared to how Granny Lu knocked on the door before, this time the person was quite gentle.

But what did she just call him? Sister?!

Ji Ran was made speechless.

“I’m Gao Hui, Changqing’s wife,” Lu Zhen said.

Ji Ran looked at the roast chicken and then looked in the direction of the main house. He sighed to himself. There wasn’t even a plate for him to put food on. He didn’t know where to put the roast chicken and could just hold it in his hand.

“Give it to me,” Lu Zhen saw that Ji Ran was in a dilemma. He reached out, took the roast chicken and stuck the stick of the roast chicken into the mud.

Ji Ran glanced at the roast chicken that was swaying in the wind. The corner of his mouth twitched as he ate the drumstick. He turned around and walked into the main house. He chewed on it quickly. The distance between the hut and the main house wasn’t long, and he ate the drumstick up. Then he wiped his mouth with his sleeve and opened the door.

As soon as the door was opened, Gao Hui immediately put a friendly smile on her face, “Sister, you haven’t eaten yet, right?” As she said this, she handed over the bowl and chopsticks to Ji Ran, “I knew that after what happened this morning, it would be unlikely for you to show up at our parents’ yard for meals, so I save a portion and take it here for you.”

Ji Ran looked down and saw that the bowl was full of rice and vegetables. However, it was just a bowl of rice and vegetables. He didn’t want people in the Lu family to point at his nose and call him thief again. Besides, brown rice and boiled vegetables were nothing like roast chicken and mushrooms.

“Hmm, what’s the smell? It smells so delicious. Sister, are you cooking in your own yard?” Just as Ji Ran was about to refuse, Gao Hui sniffed and put the bowl and chopsticks into his arms. She pushed him away, entered through the gate and followed her nose straight down to the hut.

After Ji Ran hurriedly held the bowl and chopsticks in his hand, he looked up and saw that Gao Hui had gone far away.

This woman was really thick-skinned!

Even if Ji Ran wanted to stop her, it was already too late. So he quickly closed the door and followed. She said that she was here to send him the food, but he bet that she came because she smelled the roast chicken!

“Gosh, no wonder it smells so good. Sister, you’re barbecuing chicken!” Seeing the roast chicken, Gao Hui couldn’t help but look greedily at it. And when Ji Ran came closer, she hid her emotions and smiled, “But you shouldn’t have grilled the mushrooms like this. You should have stuffed them into the chicken and roast them together. That way, it will be even more tasty. Also the chicken oil can enhance the flavors. You know, our mother has always been frugal, so we have boiled vegetables all year round. She keeps the oil in the cupboard and only uses it when it is Chinese New Year, so that everyone can enjoy a good meal during the festival. We adults are all used to it, but those kids are not. Every day, they ask for meat.”

As Gao Hui said this, she glanced at Ji Ran out of the corner of her eye. When she saw that he was playing with the vegetables in the bowl with the chopsticks and that he wasn’t planning to say anything, she felt dissatisfied, but she didn’t show it on her face. Instead she continued to pretend to be understanding and reasonable.

“Sigh, the chicken has to be several kilograms. Sister, can you eat it up all by yourself?” Gao Hui thought that since Ji Ran pretended that he didn’t understand when she said it in an indirect way, then she would just ask him directly.
