16. A Big Harvest

After Ji Ran fed himself, the two went to the mountain again, carrying the basket borrowed from a villager.

This time, Ji Ran had a clear goal. He wanted to see if there were any precious herbs on the mountain, so he could sell them to pharmacies. Born in a family of farmers, even if Ji Ran came from the modern times, he knew about herbs way better than those who were born in cities and who had never been to the countryside. Medicinal plants and herbs grew in the mountains and forests. That was basic common sense.

Although, in modern times, Ji Ran worked in an agricultural base, his grandfather was both a farmer and a famous part-time doctor in the village when he was alive. Ji Ran used to spend lots of time with his grandfather and his grandfather’s medical knowledge had rubbed off on him. Though he didn’t know much about the effects of the medicinal plants, he could name the herbs when he saw them. Besides, there were wild medicinal plants on the mountain he rented in modern times. In order to make the most of the land, he had spent a lot of money and effort on it. If what they got were just wild animals or wild vegetables, they would have to take them to a bazaar, stay there and wait for customers to buy them. And they wouldn’t be sure if they could sell them all. Even if they succeeded in selling them out, they wouldn’t be able to sell them at a good price. Right now they had nothing and they needed money badly, so they needed to think of a way to make fast money and make sure that they would make a steady income.

It was said that children who grew up in families which were short of money were better prepared to deal with the problems of in their life. And that was the case for Ji Ran. Both of Ji Ran’s parents died when he was in junior high school and he had to support himself from then on. So when it came to running a house, he had quite a lot of experience. And that was why, although he went back in time to this unknown, poverty-stricken village, all he thought about was how to survive. He never felt sorry for himself, nor did he ever think about committing suicide so that he could return to modern times.

To quote his exact words, rather than complain about the situation, he might as well seize the moment.

“You want to gather medicinal herbs and sell them to pharmacies?” Lu Zhen was surprised when Ji Ran told him about his plan.

Lu Zhen was born and grew up here. Of course he knew that there were medicinal herbs in the mountain. In fact, wherever there was a large mountain, there was no shortage of medicinal plants in it. Whenever a villager had a headache, caught a cold, had a fever, or coughed, they would go up the mountain to pick the herbs. Physicians would also pick herbs in the mountain, but the demand was small. Although the villagers were living next to a mountain, they never thought about making a living out of it.

“Mhm,” Ji Ran nodded. “When I was seriously ill before, my family couldn’t afford a physician, so my grandfather found some herbs for me to treat me. Herbs usually grow in the woods, and the terrain back in my village was flat. In order to gather the needed herbs, my grandfather had to go a long way.” It happened in the Ji Family right after Ji Ran transmigrated here, and he remembered that because he knew his grandfather had been scolded quite a lot by his uncle and aunt because of this.

When Ji Ran thought about the Ji Family, he felt a little emotional. Although Grandpa Ji wasn’t his biological grandfather, he was the only person who treated him well after he transmigrated here. Now that his soul was residing in his grandson’s body, to express his gratitude, Ji Ran believed he should treat the poor old man well. Ji Ran had decided that when he earned enough money, he would build a new residence and get the old man over so he could look after him.

As they spoke, they reached the mountain top.

Needless to say, there were way more resources in the mountains in ancient times than in modern times. Besides rare and precious wild animals, there were all kinds of medicinal herbs which made Ji Ran overjoyed.

Although there was no shortage of medicinal herbs in the mountains in modern times, most of them were common herbs. Many of the recorded medicinal plants had gone extinct as time went by, so Ji Ran had only seen descriptions of them in books. But in the mountain, the medicinal herbs that could only be seen in books were right there in front of them. And rare and precious medicinal plants in modern times like Lingzhi, ginseng and Chinese knotweed were prevalent here.

On this trip, Ji Ran got a huge harvest. Not only did he gather a lot of common herbs, he also found some Lingzhi and Chinese knotweed. As for the ginseng, it didn’t look very old, and it was growing halfway up the mountain. After some consideration, Ji Ran didn’t ask Lu Zhen to go and dig it. Anyway, the ginseng wasn’t going anywhere. And, he deliberately made a circular mark on the nearby tree.

Although he failed to get any ginseng, he would be able to make a small fortune out of the herbs he had gathered.

Seeing that he had gotten enough medicinal plants, Ji Ran stopped looking for them. And he started to pick wild vegetables, and of course he couldn’t miss the tasty wild mushrooms, so in the end, he also gathered a lot of wild vegetables, fruits, and mushrooms.

“I thought that we’re here to gather herbs.” Lu Zhen didn’t know why Ji Ran was also picking wild vegetables.

“We’ve gotten enough medicinal plants. And we should make a small fortune out of them,” Ji Ran put the wild vegetables, fruits, and mushrooms upon the medicinal plants in the basket, so that others couldn’t see what was in the basket, “I need to borrow this basket for a much longer time. And I’m not very familiar with the villager who lent it to us. I’m not sure if he will be willing to let us continue to use his basket. So I’ll give some wild vegetables to him when I ask him so that he won’t refuse.”

Lu Zhen chuckled, “That’s very considerate of you.”

“Thanks.” Ji Ran grinned at Lu Zhen and smiled brightly, “Besides, we can save some vegetables for ourselves. Or we can sell them at the bazaar. Anways it won’t be a waste of time.” To them, every penny counted.
