Ignite: The Archangels Chronicles

Chapter 13 - Not how it works

Cameron had grabbed a handful of leaves from a bush they passed. He was picking at them incessantly, ripping the leaves apart piece by piece. He felt quite awkward after being caught by Azreal, and he really did have bites up and down his legs from the fire ants. The bites were excessively itchy and it took all of his focus not to drop to the ground and furiously attack his skin the way he so yearns too. Making him even more uncomfortable, The air was swollen and oppressive. Sweat was beading all over Camerons back and pooling in between his shoulder blades. His usually curly had had gotten even more out of control in all this humidity.

He was moderately sure that Azreal knew he was spying on her. He wondered if maybe that was a sign that she was okay with it. Cameron didn't know all that much about Angels other than a few magical Qi points that are know to all healers. He did know that Azreal's mother wasn't an Angel, though he was unsure of what race she was. Camerons brows knitted together in concentration as he struggled to remember facts about the royal family.

Azreal was pretty sure Cameron was going insane. The strange boy kept tearing at those poor plants. He was repeatedly glancing at her and quickly looking away, while opening and closing his mouth like a dead fish. Starting to actually worry about his mental condition and feeling more than a little sorry for the leaves he was torturing so harshly Azreal looked over to him and said "Uh Cameron, are you okay?"

The worst part about being human to Cameron was that he had none of the heightened strength or sight, but most importantly, and to his utter humiliation, no balance what so ever. So, when Cameron's head snapped up to look into Azreal's dark beauty, his foot caught on a root throwing him sideways. He tired to catch himself by flinging his arms out, but when his fingers swiped at air and came up empty he almost landed very hard on his shoulder. Instead Azreal had caught him at the last second. Their faces only a breath apart, her arms wrapped tightly around his c.h.e.s.t. Her beauty was hard to behold this close to her. Her skin as unblemished and smooth as a marble slab. Thick dark lashes surrounded her violet eyes. He felt entranced by her once again as his eyes fluttered shut and he moved forward just the slightest bit to close the gap between them.

THUD

Cameron's a.s.s hit the ground hard as Azreal let go of him the instant before his mouth met hers. "What are you thinking?!" Azreal demanded outraged.

'What was he thinking?' Cameron thought to himself. He had gotten lost in the moment. Deciding he had no pride left at all, he tried to play the wounded soldier card. "Your just so beautiful, i just, couldn't help myself. Your magic ensnared me, its not my fault." He said with a half smile.

Azreal wasn't falling for a damn thing, and crossed her arms, rolling her eyes as she said "Pathetic, get up."

Cameron pouted from his spot on the ground and sprawled out a bit more feigning indignation. Putting a hand to his c.h.e.s.t he said "Ugh, you can be so cruel." He said in mock defeat.

With another pointed look from Azreal, Cameron once again, stood, and started brushing himself off.

Feeling like this was going to become a pattern, Azreal decided she should probably say something to him, otherwise deal with these constant awkward moments. He was already giving her that unsettling look of his.

As Azreal began walking back she asked him "Cameron you do know that Angels have mates right?" Azreal said, hoping to finally nip this foolish behavior in the bud, and be done with it.

"Yeah, but your mate doesn't have to be another Angel.. " Cameron trailed off nervously scratching his head.

"Yes, but my mate is my equal. In mind, body, and power..." It was Azreal's turn to trail off, trying to find the right words to make him understand.

Cameron stopped abruptly and turned to her "A healers power is no joke Azreal,.."

"I didn't mean it that way. Of course your powerful. Healing is one of the hardest and rarest of all magical abilities." Azreal stammered out, not wanting to offend him.

Cameron nodded his head approvingly and started walking again. They were nearing the camp and it would be time for them to move out soon. He really should have went to sleep instead of following Azreal through the woods... and then spying on her.

Cameron yawned, and tried to nonchalantly mention "Well, seems to me like i could be your mate then. I mean you did just say how powerful i am." His words may have been bold, but his palms were sweaty and he couldn't meet Azreal's burning gaze.

This boy was insane. He truly thought he was her equal. Feeling frustrated and a bit shocked "Your not my mate!" Azreal shouted out exasperated.

It was Cameron's turn to face her, while still remaining focused on where he was stepping, so as to not end up needing Azreal to catch him. "How do you know? Is it something that happens right away?" Cameron asked inquisitively, his brows furrowing.

Azreal stuttered "I'm really not sure" She wasn't expecting him to be so persistent.

"Then who's to say were not mates? Maybe the bond just hasn't settled yet." Cameron said wagging his eyebrows at her. She knew he was just teasing her to a point, but she didn't feel like talking about this anymore.

Azreal's brows furrowed "Cameron I don't think it works that way."

Cameron's eyes were so bright with possibility she just didn't have it in her to completely deny him, but didn't want to get his hopes up at the same time.

"Then how does it work?" He sounded a little w.h.i.n.ey as he exaggerated his words and crossed his arms over his c.h.e.s.t.

Azreal's frustration just kept building and building. She finally snapped "I don't know! I don't know how it works okay?" Flinging her hands up in the air with an exasperated huff.

Cameron looked taken aback at her outburst. It made Azreal feel a little bad, like she was scolding a puppy that didn't understand what it did wrong.

"I need to get back to camp and help the others, we only have a few hours until we depart. You should really get some rest." Azreal grumbled and hurried her pace to a point where she knew Camerons human heart wouldn't be able to keep up.
