Ignite: The Archangels Chronicles

Chapter 5 - Do you smell smoke?

Azreal was much faster than Cameron and was able to easily catch up to him even though he was almost a full head taller than her an had long lean legs to propel him forward.

None of that mattered when Az had magic in her blood thrumming from the excitement of just being out and free and chasing a boy thorough the foliage in the yellow hours before dusk when the sky cant make up its mind if it wants to turn into night just quite yet.

Her magic propelled her further, faster than Camerons eyes could even keep up as she was now directly in front of him just waiting for his eyes to catch up and trip him up. Just as he started to stumble Az giggled and caught his tunic by the sleeve to prevent him from actually falling.

Cameron, embarrassed, chuckled nervously and said "Hey, No fair!" He pointed and accusing finger "You can't use your magic to win races, it's against the rules." He puffed up his c.h.e.s.t indignity and crossed his arms.

Az coughed and covered her mouth with her hand to suppress her laugh as she regarded Camerons stance and said "I didn't know there were rules to chasing one through the woods."... Her eyes twinkled with amus.e.m.e.nt.

Cameron looked his best to seem as if she was still in the wrong; and that he wasn't just embarrassed. "Well then there is much you don't know. I may be more than of willing assistance to help you with anything you may need.." he trailed off.

Azreal was a bit confused. What did he mean by that and what was he talking about? "Cameron, maybe you did get seriously injured during our magic session. Are you feeling well?"

Cameron lifted an eyebrow not sure how to continue. He hadn't much practice with girls at all and flirting was definitely a sport beyond his capabilities. So naturally, he fumbled for something smart to say back, and just lamely replied "ah, yeah, ah I'm fine." It came out thick and he had to clear his throat.

Azreal still wasn't convinced. So she walked right up to him and grabbed his chin looking straight into his eyes peering what Cameron felt like was into his soul. And said "You are acting very strange. I am much faster and stronger than you. What would i need your help with?" Azreal tilted her head to the side puzzled.

She knew it had been a while since she had to actually deal with real emotions up front. She spent the last three years in The BlackWood with only her ever faithful spirit beasts that roam and protect the forest from outsiders. Her heart twinged thinking about the forest creatures that had helped her survive those first initial days after her life had fallen apart.

Cameron noticed the glazed look crossing over Azreals face and knew he was losing her. This conversation was not going the way he was hoping it would. He started to open his mouth and tell Azreal to never mind what he said.

She knew Cameron was saying something to her but all she could do was stand there and relive the horrid events. She could smell the smoke, and she could see the fire, feel it's intense blaze searing her skin. A rancid burning smelling stuffing itself inside her nose, assaulting her senses. Azreal shook her head trying to throw herself out of the daze the had her enraptured.

But it felt like no matter how she tried to shake it the scent still clung in her senses overpowering her with dread. "Do you smell smoke?" Azreal abruptly asked.

Cameron caught off guard, sniffed the air. He didn't smell any smoke but the again he didn't have magic to enhance his senses. Camerons face immediately shifted from one she couldn't quite place to one of worry. "We should get back to the camp." Was all Cameron said as he took off at a sprint back to the camp..

Azreal unwilling to take the long hike back through the woods focused on her jumping skills. Jumping wasn't like regular magic. Most children that have even the simplest of magic can jump even at a very young age. And Azreal had been jumping in the shadows between space since she was able to run. She immediately started sprinting and shifting through the darkness. While the ever shifting darkness pulled at her, her desperation and worry had her blood singing and wings pulsating at her back; unhinged against her skin begging to break free. But she didn't want the additional weight of wings to slow her down as she moved though space. She hit the clearing that marked their makeshift tent village and stared dumb struck at what she saw.

Half of the village was burning. And she could see people screaming and running for their lives in the opposite direction of where she stood. Fury and confusion mixed in the dark pool that was roaring to be let out inside her. Alas her wings ripped free violently slashing the grass with blood as they tore from her body. Azreal relished in the pain that she felt; it teathered her to her senses as she felt lost in her rage.

Her hands were gripped into tight fists as she Immediately pushed off the ground, her powerful wings excelling her up unto a high branch that she easily grabbed and swung upon. As she searched the scene below she used her air to suffocate the fire ravaging the tents and burning her people alive. A woman was struggling to pull her unconscious husband from underneath a fallen tree, luckily the fire hadn't spread to the side of the log pining the man in place. Immediately Azreal leapt from the tree and made to jump right in front of the struggling couple, the woman's desperate screams ringing in her ears. On her way down she felt herself pass through a barrier, and as soon as her head was through, she could her the screams and pleas of the camp on fire.

'Someone must have known I was here, and waited until I wasn't around to make their move; and then erected a barrrier to cover the screams of my people so I wouldn't come rushing back.' Only the fool didn't think of the smoke scent billowing on the wind and Azreals heightened senses.

Just as Azreal finished lifting the man to safety she saw a mid level demon Death Dealer wrapped in the dark blood red regalia that was befitting of his hideous sanction. He stepped into the middle of camp and declared "You are at my mercy now you spineless fools!" His face contorted into a sneer, and midnight blue hair fell across his large obsidian eyes. "I am going to kill every last one of you, and I'm going to have my way with your master too, after she comes back to discover her pitiful hoard destroyed" the Death Dealer spat in disgust, oblivious to Azreal's presence.`
