Long Past Dawn

Chapter 7 - 7~ Unknown Variable

"So Batman, care to explain why you called us out here for some kid?"

"I think you all saw her earlier, she's not just some kid."

They do realize that I can literally hear every word they say about me? "Umm for the record I do have a name, I've told you about four or five times-"

"Yeah wasn't it something Sunset....?" Wow, Flash I'm sooo glad you didn't remember it so I can tell you yet again.

"Dawn, sir. Dawn Amor, age 13, a freshman at Ivyland." I say trying not to sound too annoyed, yet I still fail.

"Wait, Ivyland as in the Ivyland? The famous prep school?" Flash says his mouth hanging open.

"Yes, sir." Ha take that, next time you should remember someone's name.

"Flash that doesn't matter right now what does is.... you know what, Dawn come here," Batman says signaling for me to come and stand a few feet behind his car, I move to the spot he pointed to and suddenly I have a very bad feeling about what's going to happen. "I'd watch carefully if I were you."

Oh god please don't do this to me. I hardly see him move but before I know it a Batarang is headed straight at my face. God must have given up on me at this point.

This time I don't even have to say anything, I don't even think it, I just feel the familiar rush of power and it stops inches from my face. Wow, these people are really trying to kill me here, might as well say my goodbyes here.

There's a stunned silence as everyone takes in what they've just seen, well so would I if I hadn't done it, it's not like you see a teenager stop a deadly weapon every day, "Ummm can I move now?"

They seem to break out of their trance and Batman nods and I safely move out of the way, for added effect after I'm safely out of the way I point at the Batarang and say "start!"

It immediately restarts and soundly hits and lodges straight into a cement collum that was directly behind me. Wow, wouldn't want to see what it would look like if that had hit me also glad I didn't have to find out.

"Not to mention the crystal matter."

As he says that I open my wings on command, man I can get used to this, and fan them out so that you can see the individual crystals.

Another pause of silence before Batman continues, "I'm not sure what it is, I have a few ideas, but I'll need a test sample to know for sure."

I'm sorry test what now? I'm fine with being your practice dummy, well not really but you know what I mean, but I am not going to be some lab rat in your crazy experiments! Peace! I am out!

"Would that in any way harm the girl?" Aquaman asks lifting his brow in question. Oh great, I've upgraded from kid to girl! Great just great! But yes I would also like to know the answer to that.

"No, I'll only need a sample of the crystal."

Ok, that's fine then, I turn to my wings and pull out a crystal. It doesn't even hurt, what is kinda weird is another grows in right at the exact place I pulled the other one out. I bring it over to the table and put it in the middle, "Will this work?"

They all look at me like I'm crazy. What? What did I do now?

"Y-you can just pull them off like that?" Green Arrow asks looking me up and down.

"Yeah, it doesn't even hurt."

"Well, then I'll begin testing," Batman says, clearing his throat, as he gets up, carefully grabbing the crystal like he thinks it might break and walking over to a microscope in one corner of the warehouse. He then takes a small scalpel and tries to cut a piece of it, the scalpel goes in easily but suddenly a piercing noise comes from the crystal, like its being hurt. Suddenly all I an think that something is threatening me, I have to get rid of it, I have to dispose of all threats.

Batman finishes cutting and the noise just breaks off and I can breathe again, wait, why was I thinking like that again? Why would Batman be a threat to me?

I push the thought out of my mind as Batman puts the sample under the microscope to study it. One minute passes and Batman's brow seems to wrinkle. Three minutes pass, there's no news and a ghostly silence seems to have set in, none of us speak a word. Five minutes pass, Batman finally raises his head, frustration clear as day on his face.

"Good news, bad news or worse news?" He says turning to like I get to pick, well I mean it is about me so...

"Good news.....?" Goddamnit Dawn, you're not even convincing yourself here! Try harder!

"Good news is I might have a clue about what you are." Ok then? Aren't I human? "Bad news is that it's a mess, the sample turned between human white blood cells and bone matter to something completely different. In sort, the genome is a mess and it seems like there's some unknown variable in all of it that makes the two switch suddenly....." Welp..... that's great, I just found out that I'm human and something else, how was your day?

"..... And the worse news?" I mean I can count, he only said the good news and the bad news so all that's left is the worse news. That's math, stay in school kids!

".... The worse news is that I lied about the good news." ok, you f***ing did what!?!

"So you're saying that besides the information on the sudden switch of my genome we're still back at I can stop objects in time and then restart them with them still going at the same velocity as when they started and not to mention the wings and the flying stuff..... Or at least until we find out what that variable is....." I say trailing off, well that and the sudden assessing of threats that don't exist but I don't necessarily want to say I've been assessing their skills to see if they could take me down or if I could. Somehow doesn't seem like a good conversation topic.

"Pretty much...." Batman says, "There are other tests we could do but... Until we find out the unknown variable the options are limited, though the information we have now can be useful...."

I really don't like that but so can you please not add it or finish the sentence already!? The suspense is killing me over here!

"What kind of tests....." I say, narrowing my eyes. I have a very, very bad feeling about this.
