Overlord: Blue Citadel Alternate

Chapter 43 - 『Midnight Moonlight』

The two wandered into the room, Vertum allowing her in first, before closing the door behind them. They were quiet, awkwardly so, up until he decided to walk towards the bed and face plant directly into the soft feathered mattress.

"...Eh?" Ninya blinked seeing him going over to the bed and flopping on the bed.

In a way, she was expecting the worst, that he would force himself on her or something along those lines. She knew she wouldn't be able to physically resist the man, and if he had control over her mind, it was likely she wouldn't be able to do so mentally either. Yet instead of doing either one of those things, he went over to the bed and decompressed face first.

"Um...Uh, Vertum-dono, are you okay?" She stepped towards the bed, looking at him as his silvery white hair almost blended in with the expensive looking vanilla white quilt.

"I'm fine," he'd say turning his head and look over towards her as she stood at the foot of the bed, at the opposite corner from which he was resting near.

"Hm..." Undoing her mantle and removing her tunic, after folding them, she placed her items on the chair by the closet. She then looked over at him, now just in a black top and trousers, slipping off her boots carefully. Once she placed them on the bed, she glanced over the pouch on the belt she left around her tunic, then turned her attention towards Vertum.

"Something wrong?" He returned her gaze evenly.

"I was just expecting..." Her voice droned off, fading into the background.

Narrowing his eyes on the girl, he raised a brow, "Abuse?"

"Kin-kind've..." She hugged herself slightly and walked over to the bed, putting her knee on the mattress before flopping onto it on her side. The entire mattress moved as she did so.

"I could, but only if you wanted me to," Vertum wasn't really in the mood to force her into anything. That and he had no idea if it would produce any offspring, as his experiment with Enri hasn't concluded. However he did know it would bring him some endorphins and p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e. Letting out a sigh, he crawled up to the pillows and flopped the side of his face into them.

"That's... Not what I meant," a faint smile appeared across Ninya's lips.

"So what is your true name?" Vertum and Ninya were both facing one another, though there was initially two feet between them. "It helps a bit if a problem arises in the future..."

"Problem...?" Ninya seemed a bit confused, though she figured he deduced Ninya wasn't her true name. It was part of her sister's name and an alias at that. "My name is Lysithea."

"Pretty name," Vertum smiled lightly hearing it, "I have a spell I can use in order to revive others, using their names, rather than just outright casting it..."

Lips parting at the news of such a spell, her ears seemed to perk up as she laid there on her side, propping her head up in her palm supported by her elbow. "Oh?"

Magic was the one thing she was good at, and she had a well known talent for it, so she was of course interested in hearing about a spell. Little did she know, she would never be able to use it as she was, as a human.

"You want to learn more?" Vertum chuckled quietly as he saw her interests shining through her eyes, the eagerness to learn.

"Of... Of course," She was already snagged by his hook.

"It's a mythological grade spell," Vertum declared, and at that moment she found herself staring a figure who spoke of being able to cast an eighth tier spell. However this True Resurrection he was hinting towards was a ninth tier spell, making it even more legendary that she was lead to believe.

Ninya leaned closer, flexing her eyes at him. "You're... Not going to tell me more, are you?" Her voice remained humble and quiet, the faint traces of a smile never leaving her lips.

"Maybe at a later date," Vertum rolled onto his back and folded his hands over his c.h.e.s.t, his elbows resting on the mattress at either side of him. His eyes moved to the ceiling, wooden panels which acted as a barrier between this room and the one above.

Compressing her lips, "Why did you ask for my life in return for saving me and my friends?"

"That question has been bugging you all day... Hasn't it?" The dragon shifted slightly on the quilt, his eyes slowly drifting over towards her.

"It has," she admitted with a sigh, dropping her head onto the pillow.

"You remind me of someone precious, someone I had a chance with, but never took." He lifted one hand up and stared at the back of it. The magic lamps lighting the room starting to dim.

Ninya blinked hearing the words he decided to share. Who could she have possibly reminded him of? He was a Dragon, right? She took in a quick deep breath, before slowly exhaling, moving onto her back as well. "Want to talk about her?"

"She had her hair a bit longer than yours, she had green eyes... Wore mens clothing, though I'm sure for a different reason than you." Vertum snickered as he noted her own friends didn't know who or what she really was. She had to have been really skilled at hiding this kind of thing, or they knew and didn't let her know they knew... Or everyone knew except for Lukrut, probably for good reason of course.

"Ah... She was as pale as me?"

"Yup," Vertum snickered quietly, "She was rather famous too. A warrior in the field and an actress in a theater of sorts," he dumbed it down a bit so that it fit a medieval world view.

"An actress?" Ninya found herself snorting at the idea of herself being an actress. She was capable of fooling her friends into thinking she was a man, so technically, she was one.

Vertum could see she came to that realization rather quickly as her eyes dimmed slightly as it was becoming slowly darker in the room.

"Why didn't you take a chance...?"

"I was afraid I was going to destroy her career at the time," Vertum was practically treating this as therapy. Finally having someone to talk about this since his arrival, as that demon friend wasn't around.

"Oooh..." Ninya's brows jumped slightly before resting, creasing slightly together. "I'm... I'm sure you could have worked something out, the two of you..." She smiled sympathetically, knowing he was speaking of this girl in past tense, so she was sure she was no longer of the world.

"That was what I was thinking too, up until a couple weeks ago." His eyelids drooped, closing slightly, remembering how he had showed up in this world with the guild's City and NPCs.

Ninya could see that even though he probably had Enri, the girl he came with, he wasn't happy. Even with all the times he grinned, smiled and seemed outgoing earlier in the day, she could see it. "I... I'm not really sure what else to say."

"Sometimes it's best to just listen," Vertum shrugged lightly as he looked over at the humble Adventurer, hard to believe that she had chosen a lucrative occupation with her personality. "I enjoy your boyish charm though," he let out a teasing tone as he let his eyes finally close.

She blinked seeing his breathing calm down and his eyes begin to move under the lids. He had fallen asleep near instantly with his head turned towards her. He must've been exhausted, but it was hard to tell up until they came into this room... That was the only thing she didn't see.

"Hey... Vertum-dono?" She reached over, lightly touching his shoulder.

His eyes immediately shot open, focusing in on her, "Yeah?"

She blinked, "What kind of dragon are you?"

Vertum pursed his lips as she had woken him up in order to ask such a mundane question. "Mirage," he replied before letting his eyes slowly close again.

"I.. Never heard of a Mirage Dragon," she wasn't quite sure what to make of the name he gave.

"We're reclusive and prefer indirect confrontation," he yawned as he finally let his eyes close again, not wanting to open them up even if she were to keep him up.

"Indirect?"

"My Dragon breath attack will attack and destroy your brain, force you to attack your friendlies or flee from me," Vertum responded as to elaborate what he could do by just breathing on her the wrong way.

"Wow..." That was one thing she wasn't expecting at all.

"And my bite puts you into a coma," Vertum's hand slithered over towards hers, grabbing her wrist and jokingly bringing it toward his mouth.

"Wha--!" Ninya pulled her hand from his hand, finding that he was hardly using a grip. "That wasn't funny," she tried not to laugh at herself nervously, hiding her hand under her side now. "You... Weren't serious were you?"

Vertum was already asleep again, not responding to the question that she inquired about, but there was a small trace of a smile across his lips.
