Queen Of Science

Chapter 2 - Not That Bad?

Seeing Fern's panicked look, Emily says, "Hey, what's wrong? You're shaking."

"My research proposal for bio was rejected! Now I have to fix my current proposal or come up with a completely new one by this Friday."

"What! No way. Let me see."

Fern gives Emily her phone. As Emily reads the remarks, her shoulders relax, and she calmly puts the phone down once she is done.

"Mmh, it really did get rejected." Trying to calm Fern, Emily smiles and says, "But, isn't that bad! All you have to do change your research question and find better sources."

"Excuse me? How are you so calm?" As Fern's eyes start to water, she says, "It took me two whole weeks to write that proposal. How am I supposed to write a new one in only three days?"

Under her breath, Emily mutters, "Two weeks? This might actually be bad."

"What?"

"Nothing! Anyways you don't have to redo the whole proposal." Patting Fern's head, Emily perks up and says, "Plus, I'll help you! I already got my proposal approved, so I have plenty of time. We can also ask Prof. Jameson for help. I've gone to his office hours before; he's really nice."

After thinking a little, Fern takes a sip of her coffee, nods her head and says, "M'kay, thanks. You're the best."

"Great! Let's work on it tonight and tomorrow. We can still go to the art gallery on Friday!"

Rolling her eyes, Fern pretends to be grumpy and says, "How are you still thinking about going out?"

"How could I forget about something so important? I have priorities, you know."

"Well, we have a different idea of good priorities."

Emily grins and says, "We'll just have to do something about that won't we."

...

Ignoring every person who has ever advised a student ever, Fern stayed up until 2 am last night to do homework.

[ 7:15 AM - Good Morning! ]

[7:20 AM - Wake up!]

[7:25 AM - Bus Leaves Soon!]

Finally mad enough at her phone to wakeup, Fern ignores the alarm and gives the ceiling her best glare. Now that the popcorn ceiling with splotches of yellow is firmly put into its place, Fern jolts her exhausted body awake by jumping out of bed and running to the dorm bathroom.

Once Fern has entered the bathroom and has done her toilet business, her bleary mind takes a moment to look at herself in the mirror. Her long blonde hair is pulled up into three dutch braids, but all of the small hairs have fallen out. Fern's hair looks like she got electrocuted after a 5-year old tried to turn her hair into rope.

Traveling further down, Fern is wearing a giant oversized shirt, no bra, and the world's most skimpy shorts. This situation would not normally faze Fern; however, the bathrooms were recently made co-ed. A couple of days ago there was a plumbing failure in the men's bathroom, and the dorm floor made a unanimous vote that the boys shouldn't have to walk to another level to go to the bathroom.

Already in a time crunch, but embarrassed by the idea of a potentially cute guy seeing her in this state, Fern makes the executive decision that no one will smell her morning breath if she has coffee breath. Ducking back into her room, Fern starts her electric kettle, which definitely not banned in the dorms, and lets her coffee brew as she gets dressed.

Finally, Fern is covered head to toe in warm clothing and is running out to the bus. As she makes her way into the bus shelter, Fern walks up to Emily, huffs and says, "Living in an off-campus dorm was a terrible idea."

Nodding to Fern's mug that has leaked a bunch of coffee due to being jostled around, Emily remarks, "Well clearly someone didn't get enough sleep last night." Reaching over and snagging a couple of sips of coffee from Fern's mug, Emily cheerily says, "Excited for the day? You know I am!"
