Queen Of Science

Chapter 5 - Excitement

With a hop in her step, Fern's rainbow scarf bounces as she walks to the nearest staircase. Pulling out her phone, Fern texts Emily.

[Meeting is finished! You were right- the prof. was really nice!]

Instead of trying to walk down the stairs and look at her phone at the same time, Fern quickly runs down the two flights. Now mildly out of breath, Fern sits on a lobby bench and starts looking up stores that sell fast-growing plants. Before she can make much progress, Emily texts her back.

[Great! My lecture is wrapping up in five-ish minutes. See you in the Bio Sci lobby?]

[Okie~ See you then]

After Fern sits around for a while and continues her search for the least expensive seeds, Emily approaches from around the corner. She has her hair tied up in a messy bun. Rather than wearing her typical eye contacts, Emily has chosen to wear her fashionable round glasses. Once she is close enough to be heard, she says, "Hey girl, tell me all about how I was completely right and am the best friend ever."

Looking up from her phone, Fern says, "You're the best friend ever. Thanks for being wonderful and encouraging me to get help."

A little surprised by Fern's genuine compliment, Emily says, "Gee thanks. You must have had a fantastic time."

"I did. I don't know what I was expecting- him to be mean? I thought that he would be snappy and not very helpful. Instead, he was patient and would make sure that I wasn't confused before continuing."

Looking up at the clock, Fern realizes that her next lecture is starting in 10 minutes. Recalling that Emily also has her next lecture soon, Fern gets up and says, "Let's start walking to Smith Hall."

Agreeing with Fern, Emily starts walking to the building's exit.

Still excited about her morning, Emily says, "Anyways, he said that my topic is fascinating. When does a professor ever say that a research topic is interesting? I feel like that one student in the class that always has their questions called 'a good question' by the teacher. Maybe I actually am a good student."

"Girl, you are a great student. I'm glad that someone other than me is seeing what I see."

"Thanks. You're also a fantastic student; you're going to be the world's best science journalist someday."

Flipping the non-existent hair on shoulder, Emily says, "Darling, I know"

As the two students get closer to Smith Hall, Fern says, "Do you want to work on the project after this lecture? I kind of want to take advantage of this moment and just do a bunch today."

"Yes- that's a great idea. I have to get working on my literature review. Meet up at the library?"

Splitting off from Emily and walking towards the building next door to Smith, Fern yells, "Great! See you then."
