Reincarnation: A New World

Chapter 23 - Fire + Mana = Dragon

As soon as Nora walked into the room, she asked, "Great Mage Sev, would you happen to have some paper I could use?". Oddly perplexed but curious, he obliged, "I just happen to have a stack of paper. What's the occasion, Nora?"

Understanding the inquiry, Nora simply responded, "It's easier to show you than to explain, would you mind?" while gesturing towards the paper.

"Here..." Great Mage Sev handed a paper to Nora. She then drew upon the Mana within her body and formed a brush like a construct. The sight of which made Great Mage Sev freeze. To him, this was an impossible sight. He instantly recognized such a level of mana mastery. How was it possible for Nora to have already accomplished something he was still trying to achieve. It perplexed him to the point in which he forgot he was still holding onto the paper, his grip unrelenting until Nora broke him from his trance with a slight cough.

Then, with the paper in hand, Nora attempted something she had previously theorized, she imbued a tiny portion of the ambient fire element into the tip of the brush construct and began to burn onto the paper, "Tempering by a Thousand Cuts".

"Great Mage Sev, would you mind passing a few dozen pages? I'll show you what it is I'm writing after class..."

With a slight stutter at the sight of Nora writing with a Mana construct, unfazed by the feat she was performing, he responded, "Uh... mmm.. sure..."

With a stack of papers, Nora made her way to her seat and waited for the class to start. While she waited she continued to write on the remaining pages. Luckily for Nora, Great Mage Sev realized how much trouble and chaos Nora could cause if someone spread the information that Nora could create Mana constructs to the Lightcrows or any other of the major families.

In a decisive moment, he with a few words, cast a camouflage spell. Upon the casting, Nora immediately felt its effects. She recognized the feeling the spell gave off, it reminded her of a stealth technique she once practiced. Instead of invisibility, the effect was more of indifference. Someone would simply pass over the one enshrouded in the spell instead noticing the one in question.

If such as spell was so easy to cast by a practitioner of black magic, Nora could somewhat understand why the Lightcrows feared them. In Nora's old world, such a technique was only practicable by those who already have the power to shatter mountains with a single finger, someone far more powerful than Nora believed Great Mage Sev to even be capable of.

Not minding the spell, Nora continued to write the 'Tempering by a Thousand Cuts' technique for Percy, all in time before class begun.

As soon as the class had begun, Great Mage Sev covertly cancelled the spell on Nora and began his lesson. Unlike the previous lesson which was on Goblins and their hierarchy, today's lesson was based on two very similar creatures to Goblins, the Hobgoblin and the Bugbear. The former being a tall humanoid creature who resembles a human far more than they resemble a goblin. Their orangey tan skin and the vast amount of fur that covers their bodies being their biggest giveaways. Their constant warl.u.s.t makes the Hobgoblin a dangerous creature to face. Often grouping up with other Hobgoblins to raid and pillage. The Bugbear, on the other hand, was a far lazier creature with even superior abilities than the Hobgoblin. Their appearance resembled a large orange bipedal ape. Dangerously powerful and incredibly sneaky, Bugbears were a force to be reckoned with, well... If only they weren't so unbelievably lazy. The only things that could make a Bugbear take action were the necessity to consume food and the d.e.s.i.r.e to find a better place to sleep and laze around.

Nora couldn't help but laugh at the idea of such a lazy creature as the Bugbear, how could they even come close to surviving with such lazy tendencies.

The lesson flew by. Before she knew it, the class had wrapped up and people were exiting the class. Nora and Percy made their way to Great Mage Sev before he personally led them to Great Mage Mirlie's class.

When they arrived at Great Mage Mirlie's class, some students were still leaving the class. Nora waited for the last few students to leave before handing the manual she had written out to Percy.

"Percy, this is for you. I guess it's quite similar to a knight technique, well... except for the fact that it's actually useful. Only practice it if you truly do want to get stronger. This technique is exceptionally painful. Don't take it lightly..."

"Thank you, Nora, why is it called 'Tempering by a Thousand Cuts'?"

"That's for you to find out" a small vengeful smile appeared on Nora's face as she quietly spoke.

The two Great Mages who were now being ignored by Nora and Percy couldn't help but eavesdrop on their conversation. Upon hearing that Nora had written a knight technique, or at least something similar, they couldn't help but be curious. Any Great Mage who had progressed passed the stage of Mage were innately curious for their power originating in the knowledge they acc.u.mulated.

Trying to be sly, both of the Great Mages cast separate observatory spells, Great Mage Sev created a tiny humanoid eye that hovered in the corner of the room attempting to peer into the manual which Percy was soon to open, while Great Mage Mirlie cast a miniscule flame which also clung to the walls as it provided Mirlie with a view of the manual.

Nora easily noticing their attempt simply glared at the two Great Mages who were acting more like children than the two actual children in the room, "If you want to look at it, just ask." Nora's words holding a rather harsh tone.

Great Mage Mirlie slightly peeved at the tone which Nora talked to them, she without thinking spoke out, "You shouldn't use such a disrespectful tone with those who are older than you!"

"Well if we're going by age you should kowtow and call me Ancestor" the words that were spoken by Nora immediately shut down Great Mage Mirlie as she remembered that although Nora was currently young, she had lived far longer than everyone in the school combined.

Ashamed at her lapse in memory, she sat down and remained silent.

Nora looked over at Percy, "Read over the manual in full and try to practice it. Alright?" a quiet nod from Percy signified his agreement.

Having handed the cultivation manual to Percy, Nora made her way to the Great Mages.

"Would you mind teaching me some magic?" Nora's words restarted the downtrodden Great Mage Mirlie, "You have to be able to control Mana, you're still a Pre-Initi..." her words cut off by Great Mage Sev, "Don't even try, she's already attained mastery over Mana... Nora, do you mind?"

Understanding Great Mage Sev's request, Nora decided to truly show her limits. With all her focus, she siphoned half of the entire Mana within her, creating a humongous dragon construct. Nora guided the construct around the classroom, before deciding that she would try the same nifty trick she attempted earlier. Suddenly, the humongous dragon construct which once was no more than an outline of Mana turned into a dragon constructed by a raging fire.

"So... would you mind teaching me some magic?"
