The Alpha's Prisoner

Chapter 69 - 69: Instincts

Violet returned home in a rush, but remembered that Jack wasn’t going to be there when she arrived.

He said it could take a while to solve the issue in the outskirts, so she would have to wait.

She was getting really anxious while waiting for him, and she went through the conversation she had with Lance on her mind several times, to make sure she didn’t let anything skip her judgement.

She was feeling well, she didn’t feel in her guts that she had to suspect him. For the first time, she could say that her instincts were telling her the right thing.

Lance was a very honest man. She had never had a conversation with him where he didn’t say the truth to her face, even though he knew she could get hurt by what he had to say.

He liked to be straightforward, and even though he could be lying to her, giving all the facts and events happening lately, Violet still believed when he said he was by their side.

But she knew Jack wasn’t going to believe that.. And she would have to be firm and make him trust her.

Violet wasn’t hungry to have lunch, since her anxiety was making her a little sick.

Some time in the afternoon, she grabbed some snacks so her stomach didn’t get empty for too long, but she couldn’t stop going to the front gate of the mansion to see if Jack had arrived.

When the sky was starting to get dark, Violet heard a little turmoil in the living room. She ran downstairs and Jack was talking to some people, while Mary came with a large tray of food for the newcomers.

“Hey, baby!” he said with a smile, and gave her a soft kiss.

Violet got a little shy from being kissed in front of so many people and felt her cheeks burn of embarrassment.

“How was it?” she asked.

Jack nodded while taking a cup of tea that Mary offered him.

“Very productive, I can say.” a man called Jonas replied to her instead of Jack.

The others that went with him on the journey were now entertained in some conversation about how they intimidated the troublemakers that gave the family of farmers a hard time.

They were flaunting themselves, and everyone looked really excited about their story. She pulled Jack aside and said she had something really important to talk to him.

Jack widened his eyes, concerned.

“Did something happen? Are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m good. Something did happen, but I can’t talk to you about it here.”

Jack looked around to see if everyone was entertained enough not to miss his absence and grabbed her hand, pulling her upstairs to his office.

After they were accommodated inside the room, Violet saw herself doubting about how she should start the topic.

Jack poured some whisky for him and asked if she wanted some, which she denied.

He was looking at her with expectant eyes and looked really tired after being out the whole day.

But she couldn’t wait any longer, so decided to simply spill out everything that had happened.

“I saw Lance today.” she said, making him choke with the drink.

“You what?” he asked after recomposing himself.

So Violet explained him how Lance found her in the woods, how she was suspicious of him at first, and everything he shared with her.

Jack looked at her expressionless the entire time she was speaking, and she didn’t know if that was a good sign or not.

When she finished, she told him that Lance had offered to help them with information.

“I was wondering…” she continued.

“If we could take him in?” Jack completed for her.

She swallowed the rest of the sentence since that wasn’t necessary anymore, but still shocked that Jack assumed that before she said it.

So she simply confirmed with her head.

Jack poured down the whisky left on his glass and filled it again.

Violet could see that he was really annoyed by that, but she already knew that was going to happen.

But not because of the reasons she had imagined.

“So you want me to shelter the man that wants to marry you in my house? And even worse, the man that attacked you while you were trying to escape?”

The words came out of his mouth like they were the most absurd thing in the world.

She didn’t think about the fact that Lance wanted to marry her. That didn’t mean anything to her, and she was almost certain that it didn’t mean anything to Lance as well.

He was only encouraged by Arden to do that since he would’t have any other choice inside the Diamond Pack.

But now things were different. He could choose his future, and that included his future wife.

“Jack, it’s not like he loves me. He just wanted to marry me because Arden told him so. Don’t overthink this. Please.”

Jack drank the whisky at one go again and kept filling the glass over and over during their conversation.

“You're going to get drunk.” Violet warned him, but he didn’t seem to care.

“Yeah, well… That’s the point.” he complained looking at the window.

Violet didn’t want to feel intimidated, so she continued the talk.

“He could help us, Jack. He knows a lot of Arden’s allies, and he can even tell us where to find some of them. We could go after them.” she insisted.

“How can you be sure that he was telling you the truth, Violet?” he looked at her in disbelief.

“Because my instinct said so. I’m not wrong this time.”

“How could you know? Your instinct also seemed to think the same thing about Gwen, and look at her now. What if you are wrong again? What if I take him in and he sets a trap for us? Or even worse, kills someone?”
