The Alpha's Prisoner

Chapter 85 - 85: Promise Of A Better Future

Violet woke up late, since she and Jack stayed up all night.

But when she opened her eyes, he wasn’t there anymore.

She should have gotten used to it by now, but she always felt a little disappointed when he wasn’t by her side in the morning.

But when Violet looked at her hand and saw that shining ring on her finger, all that feeling vanished.

She couldn’t believe she was engaged to Jack.

It was finally happening. They would get married as soon as all that Arden mess was over.

She could barely wait to start planning everything. She was never the type of girl that dreamed about her wedding, since she didn’t have much freedom to dream in the first place..

But now that she was going to marry the man of her life, things were different.

As she grabbed her clothes on the floor and dressed up, she also remembered that Lance was in the mansion.

Jack had let him stay, even though in the dungeon, and gave him everything he should be missing for a long time.

Food, clothes, a good shower…

And there was also the whole Lucinda and Lance thing, one that she couldn’t believe yet.

So many good things were happening that it was kind of scary.

Violet wasn’t used to happy things coming one after the other, and it gave her the feeling that something bad could happen at any time.

She was actually expecting it, since Arden’s return was more and more evident everyday.

She went back to her room to take a shower and change her clothes, ate something real quickly and headed to the dungeon to meet Lance.

But once she arrived there, one of the guards, called Mark, told her that the man wasn’t there anymore.

Violet’s heart sunk.

How come he wasn’t there?

“Jack asked us to bring him to his office earlier.” Mark said.

“Why?”

“I have no idea. Guess he had something important to discuss. He’s actually really nice, that Lance.” he pointed out. “Hope he can stay here with us, he seems to be really good in what he does. We could use someone like him.”

Violet frowned.

“You do know who he is, right?”

She was caught a little off guard with that comment.

Why would he want someone that was supposed to be an enemy being part of their pack, let alone his army?

“Yes, Jack already informed everyone in the pack about him. And we trust Jack’s judgement. If he thinks the man is alright, we believe him.”

Only then Violet realized how powerful Jack was inside the Rebels. Of course she knew he was powerful since he was the Alpha, but the fact that everyone believed in him without any reason to do so was amazing to her.

“The Rebels is all about inclusion. We take in the ones who don’t have a home. Lots of us were following the wrong path before meeting Jack, or even his father.” Mark explained. “So we kind of understand that someone needs some trust once in a while.”

Violet narrowed her eyes.

“That didn’t seem to be the case with me though. Jack said he would've killed me if I didn’t turn out to be his mate.”

Mark smiled.

“Well, your case was a little different, right? Not only you were his mate, but you also intended to kill him. Lance didn’t do any of that, did he?”

Violet decided not to mention the fact that he had attacked her when she tried to escape with the documents she had stolen from the Diamond Pack because that would only make things harder for Lance.

After all, she had forgiven him and also knew that he was only doing his job back then. He was also confused and having mixed feelings just like her at the time, so she couldn’t blame him.

Violet smiled and said goodbye to Mark, following to Jack’s office right after.

On the way, she bumped into Lucinda on the hallway.

“Hey, girl. How are you feeling?”

“Tired.” Lucinda said, yawning.

She was still wearing her uniform and looked completely exhausted.

“Are you still working? Why don’t you ask someone to cover for you? You should take some rest.” Violet suggested.

“It’s okay, I just got off. I’m going to my room now.”

“Have you seen Lance again? Did you know he was here?”

“No, I didn’t. I just found out this morning when one of the guards told me. I didn’t know Jack was going to agree with him coming here.” Lucinda said astonished.

“Yeah, he said that he’s giving him a chance, that he thinks Lance is being honest. So… Yeah, I think that’s it. You might have a chance to be with him now.” Violet said excited.

Lucinda gave her a soft smile in return, even though really shy about it.

“Yeah, let’s see about that. Oh, my God!” she yelled, scaring Violet. “What is that on your finger?”

Lucinda widened her eyes as she glanced at Violet's hand and saw the engagement ring.

Violet was so eager to find Lance, that she forgot to tell Lucinda about the proposal.

“Ah! I forgot to tell you, Jack proposed to me last night.” Violet said like it was the most normal thing in the world, even though she felt like dying of happiness inside.

Lucinda opened her mouth in shock.

“What? How can you forget to tell me something like this? I want to know everything. Oh, my God! I’m so excited!” Lucinda said grabbing her hand and staring at the ring.

Her face lighted up instantly, and Violet saw a glance of that happy woman instead of just a tired guard.

“I promise I’ll tell you everything later. But you need to rest first, and I need to find Lance and see how he’s doing.”

Lucinda nodded and said goodbye, going straight to her room. Violet continued her way to the office.

She knocked on the door and heard Jack’s voice telling her to come in.

As soon as she entered the room, she saw a very odd scene, one that she didn’t think she’d live to see.

Jack and Lance were checking a huge piece of paper on the table and both of them seemed to be getting along really well.

Jack raised his head to see who was the newcomer and a smile appeared on his face when he saw her.

“Hey, Vi. Did you sleep well?” he asked, and Lance also looked at the same direction.

“Yes, I did. How are you, Lance?” she asked looking at him for the first time in the daylight.

Lance seemed to be much better than when she saw him on the previous night.

He still had some bruises, of course, but his face seemed less pale and more healthy.

He also seemed happier.

“I'm great. I was really well treated actually.” he risked to glance at Jack real quickly and looked at her again. “I heard about the news. Congratulations! I’m really happy for you, Vi. You deserve to be happy.”

Lance pointed in the direction of her hand and only then she understood what he was talking about.

She seemed to be forgetting about it that morning.

Violet felt nervous all of a sudden, thinking that maybe Jack could think that Lance was being sarcastic or anything, but Jack was actually smiling.

And Lance’s voice didn’t carry any sarcasm or annoyance at all.

Could it be that Lance and Jack were actually seeing eye to eye? That the men talk they had eased Jack’s reluctance in accepting Lance?

Could they really become friends one day?
