85. The Stakes

Translator: Ning LL

Feng Xi’s miserable cry could not be heard in the hubbubs of voice.

A few figures dragged Feng Xi to the corner when no one had noticed them. Hairless Chicken, the tallest one among them opened its wings to block any suspicious eyes  while glancing around like a guardian.

God of Books and Good of Bad Luck were the ones who had dragged Feng Xi to the corner. The lazy God of Books suddenly changed his attitude and glared at Feng Xi seriously, which made the latter feel nervous inwardly right away. Then, God of Books looked right into Feng Xi’s eyes and said slowly, “Master, remember this, you can never take out a precious thing like Fruit of the World so randomly. If someone with an evil intention targets you, you troubles would be endless.”

“Is it that serious?” Hearing that, Feng Xi felt that his heart trembled a bit.

“Of course, do you think this fruit is like a carrot?” God of Books rolled his eyes to Feng Xi and said that angrily.

“…” Feng Xi didn’t say anything, since God of Books was actually right about that.

Seeing Feng Xi’s reaction, God of Books, with his jaw almost dropping on the ground, thought, ‘Does master really think so?” Then, he really wanted to thump on Feng Xi and pinch the latter’s ears to to give him a lecture.

“Master, you have to keep in mind that you should never take out the fruit at any time. You see, one of the fruits in your wooden ring is already enough to make a stir in the God and Demon Kingdom. By then, all the experts would want to steal the fruit from you. Think about it, won’t you feel scared if so many people covet the fruits in your wooden ring?”

“It does sound scary.” Feng Xi touched his chin while picturing those people casting their gloomy eyes on him. Then he couldn’t help but get frightened. However, he remembered another important thing right away, “But if I don’t use the fruits, what else can I use to make a bet?”

“Eh…” God of Books was rendered speechless. After all, he was not able to help Feng Xi with the crystal thing even if he wanted to.

‘You guys are always useless at the critical moment.’ Thinking of that, Feng Xi stopped talking to them and began to rummage in his wooden ring to check if there was anything he could use as the stakes. However, only then did he find that his collection was so small because there were only a pile of green fruits in the ring.

Seeing the frustrated look on Feng Xi’s face, God of Books closed his mouth and moved away. Right now, he only wanted to save his own skin.

However, when all of Feng Xi’s buddies were trying to keep a distance from him, he suddenly showed a joyful look on his face as if he had seen the light of hope. After that, there was a milk-white stone appearing in his hand.

This stone was stolen by him from a stranger when he went to the Flying Dragon Pavilion. When touching the stone, Feng Xi could feel warmness being sent to his hand right away. So he assumed that it was not an ordinary stone and could be used to make a bet!

As Feng Xi was feeling good about himself, God of Books who had glanced at the stone couldn’t help but cry out, “Master, where did you get this?”

“Nerd, do you think I can use this stone as the stakes?” Feng Xi didn’t answer that question and only took that stone closer to God of Books.

God of Books approached the stone to take a closer look at it while stroking his chin like an archaeologist. After a while, he raised his head and said, “Yes, this stone doesn’t seem like an ordinary object. Although it is not very precious, it should be worth a few pieces of red crystal.”

“Just a few? Fine, I’ll make do with it.”

After Feng Xi and his buddies reached an agreement, they showed up in the square again. The place where the gambling was taking place was still very popular and the situation was getting even more chaotic. More and more people flooded in the place to bet.

It was already very hard for Feng Xi and his buddies to get in. However, after he saw the betting options, the cheerful look on his face disappeared at once. While his buddies were still at a loss, he thumped on the table violently, which shocked the people around him. The staffer who was in charge of recording also quieted down.

“Why there’s one option you forgot to write on the board?” Seeing the staffer looking at him, Feng Xi raised his doubt immediately in a not so calm tone, which meant he really got angry.

The staffer glimpsed at the board and then said unconcernedly, “I haven’t forgotten any option. Those are all the options. If you want to make a bet, you’d better hurry. There are lots of people waiting!”

“What do you mean by those are all the options? You have forgotten one attender! Why there are only two candidates for the first place ? Shouldn’t you add another one?” Feng Xi roared to the staffer furiously because his name was not on the board at all.

“Another one?” The staffer clearly got startled. However, he thought it through right away, “You mean that Dark Horse whose name is Feng Xi, right? He truly is a powerful cultivator in the first grade of the God King realm. Still, his cultivation level couldn’t compare with the other two candidates. Even if he has a Demon Beast in the Saint realm, so do the other two candidates. There’s only a slim chance for him to win. So the chamber of commerce made a decision to rule him out of the betting options.”

“You…”

As Feng Xi was about to curse, he was stopped by God of Books. The latter floated to his ear and whispered,

“Master, this is just fine. Now that they don’t know about your real cultivation level, none of them would bet on you. In that case, you can bet on yourself. You see, there are rules in gambling too. Generally speaking, the fewer people make a bet, the higher the odds would be. According to the increasing number of the betting, the odds would be more than ten thousand to one!” God of Books said firmly.

“Wow, really?” Feng Xi’s eyes sparkled at once.

Ten thousand to one. So the few pieces of red crystal he had might become thousands of pieces!

“Trust me, I’ll never lie to you!” God of Books patted on his chest and guaranteed that.

“Fine, none of you is allowed to speak it out.” Feng Xi’s gloomy face turned cheerful instantly. At this moment, he completely forgot that he had come here to attend the match instead of gambling.

Then Feng Xi pushed his way to the staffer and put down his stone, saying, “I want to use this as the stakes. I bet Feng Xi will take the first place.”

Others burst out laughing suddenly. It seemed everyone there was sneering at the ignorance of Feng Xi.

The staffer took a glance at Feng Xi and then at the stone. After that, he made a routine statement, “Then, please go this way to evaluate the value of the stone first. Then you can come back to me.”

Feng Xi already knew he should do that due to the explanation of God of Books before. Therefore, he ran over right away without raising an objection. The chamber of commerce would appoint a specialized staffer to do the treasure evaluation. Because there weren’t so many people using their treasures to make a bet, the evaluation room was not so crowded. Thus, it only took Feng Xi a short while to get to the front. As a result, God of Books was right about the value of the stone. It was just a stone which could disperse poisonous gas instead of some precious object. So it was only worth six pieces of red crystal.

In Feng Xi’s view, six pieces of red crystal were too few. However, as he thought that his six pieces would become sixty thousand pieces, he was just overwhelmed by excitement. Then he ran back and made a bet immediately.

After the staffer had gone through the formalities, there was a new betting option appearing on the board, and only Feng Xi had made a bet on that.

Before Feng Xi could say something, the crowd burst into laughter at once. The people all uttered sarcastic words,

“Gosh, there really is someone betting on that little boy. Have I got it wrong?”

“If you got it wrong, then I did too. Nothing is strange in this world!”

“Ha ha, the one who made that bet must have lost his mind. Although that boy is powerful, he is never the match for Carendra and Ming Heiyu. He has a Demon Beast in the Saint realm, but it doesn’t mean anything. The families of Carendra and Ming Heiyu are both infinitely resourceful, so they surely have lots of ways to deal with the Demon Beast in Saint realm. A cultivator in the first grade of the God King realm has no chance to win!”

“So, only an idiot would bet on the boy.”

Although those people were chatting with each other in public, they were actually sneering at Feng Xi. They also heard the conversation between Feng Xi and the staffer just now, so they were aware that the boy who stood next to them was the one who had made a bet on Feng Xi. Moreover, those people had come here for gambling, so they had no idea that the boy in front of them was Feng Xi. Since Feng Xi was still a vulnerable young boy, those people then decided to bully him together.

“You guys are the real idiots. You fools, you blind dogs!” Feng Xi jumped in anger while pointing at those people who had sneered at him and cursed them fiercely.

“Stinky boy, I dare you say that again.” A young man glared at Feng Xi and said that.

“Humph, I only cursed the one who has just spoken.” Feng Xi glared at the young man fearlessly with his chin up. Although Feng Xi was shorter than those guys, he was not scared by them at all.

“You brat, are you courting death?!” While saying that, the young man wanted to throw a punch at Feng Xi right away.

Suddenly, there was a harsh laughter out of the crowd. However, what really surprised everyone was the ridicule they heard next,

“Hey, isn’t this the extraordinary Dark Horse boy yesterday? I never realize that there will be someone betting on himself. That’s so shameless. I think you should just quit the match and attend the ‘who’s the shameless guy’ contest.”
