The Genesis Game

Chapter 7 - The Arcane

Waving his arms back and forth like a madman, Jack struggled to activate his ability, Chained Necrotic Pet, on Alexander's corpse. Embarrassed when nothing happened he turned to Seraph for help.

"Alright. So, how do we get this party started?" Asked Jack as he rubbed his blood stained hands together in nervous apprehension.

"You have to mentally choose your ability, and then mentally select the body as the intended target." Explained Seraph.

"I've been doing that, i've been doing that over and over, and it's not working." Complained Jack in exasperation. "It's not as easy as you make it sound man."

Seraph looked at him in annoyance and Jack instantly stopped as Seraph continued. "It's not complicated. It is as simple as thinking I want to use chained necrotic pet on this body."

"What really?" Replied Jack in surprise. "I should have tried that, it seems pretty obvious. Ok, let me do that now."

Jack closed his eyes, put his hands out and did as Seraph had suggested. A trail of blue and purple energy began to seep from his hands to the body on the ground. If they continued to travel together, Seraph would make sure the man did not develop the bad habit of closing his eyes when casting a spell or ability, he had seen too many people get killed that way.

In front of the two men, the body began to glow blue, outlined in a swirl of the outpouring of Jack's mana as he poured his magic into the ability.

"Ok Seraph. So, how will I know when it's working?" Grunted Jack as he strained from the heavy use of his limited mana pool, right before he collapsed to one knee, his checks heavily flushed from exertion and the rest of his face pale from mana exhaustion."

Seraph laughed. If the man had opened his eyes, he would have seen it was working, this would be a good learning point for the future. "Pay attention Jack and just stay focused, if this fails, you lose the chance to use the body."

The waves of mana were being pulled from Jack faster, and his now open eyes widened in fear as he looked at the speed of the flow. For a moment it seemed he would manage, until the speed increased again with enough force to knock the man over on to his hands and knees.

That was cause for concern. "Don't stop! Keep concentrating, don't lose this." Screamed Seraph.

The bright office space went dark. The overhead lights going out one at a time starting from the exertier and working inwards until the last light above the two of them went out and a dim blue light shone from the body.

"I'm not doing so hot Seraph." Said Jack, his voice cracking from exhaustion."

The ground rumbled beneath them as Seraph checked on Jack to make sure he was ok. HIs eyes being of the Fallen let him see well enough in the dark. As clear as day Seraph could see the strain was getting to the man, he would not last much longer.

"You're going to be fine. I'll make sure of that." Replied Seraph with calm resolve, he had a plan.

A plan he would soon need to put into motion as the blood that had pooled on the ground beneath Alexander's body began to move, reforming into an arcane circle that glowed red and black with power and more and more of Jack's mana was injected into the circle to fuel the ability.

The man began to shake and quiver, even on his hands and knees. Beads of sweat appeared on his forehead and dripped down, his eyes squinted shut, gritting his teeth, he was all in.

"But he's not going to make it." Thought Seraph as he realized Jack's mana pool wasn't enough to finish the casting. Seraph knew the ability still had more to go, even his own mana pool was likely insufficient. Seraph wouldn't allow it, they would not fail here.

"I've been saving these five stat points for a reason." Reasoned Seraph as he mentally brought up his status screen and quickly put two points into wisdom, two points into intelligence, and the last point into endurance.

Seraph finished applying his unused stat points just in time to catch Jack as the man finally collapsed unconscious. For a brief moment the circle began to fade until Seraph mentally grabbed control of the failing magic from Jack.

Seraph felt the same pull of force from the body that Jack had felt as his mana was torn from him in a torrent of dark crimson red. The circle flared a dark crimson as it hungrily drank and lapped up Seraph's free flowing power. His power was not inexhaustible, though he had a greater pool of magic than Jack, it was not much greater, but for him the potential gains were worth the risk.

"No second chances." He muttered to himself as he made up his mind committed to his current course of action, as he sat down in the circle and let his mana flow out of him. He didn't resist, he didn't keep anything in reserve, he let it flow, everything that he had until his vision began to blacken and his head grew heavy and he began to grow groggy and struggled to remain awake.

Movement within the circle jolted Seraph awake. Leather straps descended up out of the circle from whatever hellish dimension the two men had fed their mana to. The straps enveloped the entire body, covering it in a sort of body suit, leaving only the ruined face uncovered. The circle began to disappear, the blood and residual energy floating into the air swirling together as it flew down shoving itself into the dead man's mouth.

The dead man's face began to bubble and distort as things moved beneath the skin. Slowly a white almost plastic substance secreted through the pores, a mask of white that covered the entire face, revealing nothing of the man beneath it, the only features shown was the exaggerated smile on the mask and two eye slits that showed delight.

Still, Seraph persisted and struggled against unconscious as the sea of black in his vision continued to expand.

The body on the floor abruptly sat up, and turned to Seraph, a voice spoke from beneath the mask, a low voice, ominous, threatening, and wholly alien that turned to Seraph and asked.

"What is to by my name? Said the face of ivory with it's permanent smile of childlike wonder as it peered down at Seraph and Jack

As he slipped into unconsciousness next to Jack, Seraph responded with the first thing that came to his tired mind. "Rosebud."
