In 1888, he returned to his hometown and founded the Puyang Boxing Club in his hometown in the same year, recruiting many disciples.

In his early years, Sun Lutang studied Xingyiquan intensively. He studied under Li Kuiyuan and then under Guo Yunshen for a total of eleven years. During this period, he was also personally taught by Song Shirong, Che Yizhai and Bai Xiyuan. In addition, Sun Lutang was extremely talented and had a calm temperament.
