Ambush (2)

“Wait.” Xue Lan changed his angle and examined carefully. “It might be an ambush.”

Qi Siyu noticed 15 minutes had just passed. The two teams had not met at all within this time. This kind of delay could be disadvantageous to them.

“Reset, come back!” Qi Siyu said with curt finality. “We’ll go check. Even if there is an ambush, Reset can help us in time.”

“Coming.” Duan Wenzheng stored his rifle and ran toward the deck above.

“But…”

Looking at it again, this was the best solution, but Xue Lan for some reason felt that the situation was too simple, and instead, it made him feel…

It was a habit for the team to discuss strategies collectively, but because no one was willing to lead, it was as if it had become a habit for everyone to follow Qi Siyu’s decisions.

Although Xue Lan still had doubts, after thinking that there would be no issues when Duan Wenzheng joined them, he strongly suppressed the uncomfortable feeling in his heart.

“There should be only one person, ahead on the left, behind the container!” Su Yiyu reported after verifying. He was responsible for checking the situation in front.

“Are you sure?” Qi Siyu confirmed again.

“Charge.” Qi Siyu signaled.

Xue Lan felt doubtful deep down, but Qi Siyu was already leading the team and charging ahead.

A barrage of gunshots rose from all directions. It was too late for Xue Lan to stop his teammates from charging ahead. He suddenly remembered the solo game he couldn’t finish when he had first entered the training camp.

He and Deng Ruiqiu were the only two people left in that game. He could not find Deng Ruiqiu on that floor and could only risk climbing over the only path toward the deck…

“Oh no…” Xue Lan sucked in a breath. “Reset, watch out!!”

The instant he spoke, everyone heard a burst of gunshots behind them — amidst the confusion, the sound of gunshots ceased as fast as it had arrived.

“There are still three people left. Hopefully, all of you will get away.” Duan Wenzheng let out a subtle sigh. His voice sounded a little dejected unlike how he usually sounded.

Xue Lan’s heart instantly sank to the pit of his stomach.

Indeed.

He had felt everything was strange. Everything was actually similar to the situation when he played against Deng Ruiqiu alone — it was the same many floors, the same one path.

It was difficult for them to find Duan Wenzheng who was good at hiding, but if they were intercepted on the only path… they had an extremely big probability to succeed.

Deng Ruiqiu had really invested a lot, staking everything to intercept Duan Wenzheng with the other four people. But in this 4 vs 1 situation, Duan Wenzheng was left with no other choice but to hone all his focus on one person from Deng Ruiqiu’s team.

“Tit for tat!” Qi Siyu couldn’t believe his eyes.

Before he could recover from the shock of Duan Wenzheng’s blood-for-blood exchange, the person originally hiding behind the container suddenly launched a counterattack, charging toward them with explosives!

“Don’t fret, he’s just one person!” Qi Siyu commanded with a calm facade.

The enemy’s assaulter, who had been lying dormant for a long time, used mines to clear the way and aimed all his gunfire at Su Yiyu, taking him out in one wave! But he did not retreat to the shelter — he directly charged toward Qi Siyu whose health had been halved by the grenade!

On the sidelines, Duan Wenzheng, who had been biding his time for resurrection, coolly remarked in an indifferent tone, “Fall back!”

But how could Qi Siyu listen to his words in this situation? The enemy assaulter was only one person, while he was with two other teammates. Qi Siyu resolutely said, “Attack!”

During the course of a game, there would always be a fault in decisions. In such moments, the most important thing everyone should do was to listen to orders —

So even if Xue Lan felt Duan Wenzheng’s decision was right, he followed Qi Siyu’s decision and aimed his fire toward the assaulter.

Amidst the whirling battlefield, Xue Lan and Meng Weiran successfully neutralized the assaulter, only to find Deng Ruiqiu and his three companions closing in on them at that very moment! The enemy sniper swiftly eliminated Qi Siyu from an elevated position, employing the unsuspecting assaulter as bait. Deng Ruiqiu, accompanied by the team’s medic, set their sights on eliminating the heavily wounded Meng Weiran.

Fortunately, after the snipe sounded, Meng Weiran ducked in behind the shelter in time. This barely saved him from being taken down instantly, but he and Xue Lan had been split due to this wave of attack.

The situation was increasingly dire.

The intense exchange led to the loss of not just one, but two members, including a fairly vital medic within the team. The opposing team had an assaulter, a medic, and a sniper positioned at a high vantage point, each of them in good condition. On the other hand, their team had lost a sniper, an assaulter, and a medic…

Only Xue Lan and a heavily wounded Meng Weiran were left on the battlefield. Even though the two had been separated, they were being pushed to a dead end. Suddenly, they found themselves outflanked by three people.

Qi Siyu sank into his seat in utter dejection.

“We shouldn’t have immediately attacked earlier.” Meng Weiran, who was usually silent, couldn’t help but speak up. “How… how do we proceed?”

“Stall. Wait for Reset to revive,” Qi Siyu said while gritting his teeth.

“How do we stall? Me and Exist are at dead ends. There’s nowhere to hide. Given my current state of health, I’d be down just from a simple strike from a medic’s blade. No need for a gunshot to take me down.”

Hearing that, Qi Siyu’s expression became darker. Everyone’s moods turned delicate.

“We can do it.”

In the silence, Xue Lan’s voice sounded gentle and firm.

Meng Weiran paused. “I’ll go attract the fire and we’ll take out the medic first?”

“No.” Xue Lan adjusted his headset. He focused his eyes onto the elevated position where the enemy sniper was hiding. “I’ll go.”
