Touch of Fate

Chapter 365 - Core Worries

Mike stared at the bottle of blue liquid, waiting to see if anything would happen. At first, it didn't seem like any change was going to take place, but then, very gradually, the color began to change. A hint of gold appeared in the depths of the otherwise cerulean fluid, which slowly grew and expanded until it filled the bottle entirely.

Finally, after a good ten minutes, the solution released a puff of bluish vapor, signaling the potion had fully mȧturėd. He was left with a vial that seemed to contain molten gold, despite being cool to the touch.

Using Appraise, he evaluated the fruits of his efforts.

—--------------------------

Elixir of Life

Alchemical Item (Tier 4, Rank 2)

A semi-divine concoction that could only be produced by a truly legendary alchemist using some of the finest ingredients available in Ea. Those drinking this elixir are completely healed of all injuries, cured of all diseases and poisons, freed from all curses and harmful enchantments short of those imposed by the gods, and returned to the highest quality of health the System has recorded for them. In the case of consumers who are past their prime, this elixir will reduce their physical age by several years and increase their overall lifespan.

Note: This particular elixir was produced through alchemical mutation of lower quality ingredients, lowering its effective rank from 3 to 2.

"Hmm…" He muttered unconsciously as the information passed across his vision.

"That does not look like an antitoxin." Morris commented blithely from his seat on the other side of the room.

"I am aware of that. It mutated…again."

"Let me guess. It turned into something unbelievable again?"

Mike grunted as he set the bottle next to his other unintended creation. "More or less. At least this time it's something I could already do with magic."

[Well, mostly. I don't know how easy it would be to make someone younger through magic, and I'm not sure if I really want to open that Pandora's Box just yet.]

"Come on. That Oil of Dragonification sounded pretty interesting. With how much you interact with them, wouldn't you want to try being one for a while?"

"As I said before, there is nothing in its description that mentioned how long the effect lasted. While I could probably reverse the effect with Life Magic, I'd rather not risk getting stuck in the body of a giant lizard for something as simple as curiosity."

His friend shrugged. "Suit yourself. I, for one, think you'd look better as a dragon."

"Ha, ha. Very funny." Mike grumbled before turning his attention back to his work. The next set of ingredients were meant to create a transmutation reagent used for more complex recipes, but considering his current rate of unintended mutations, there was a very real chance he'd end up with something like the Philosopher's Stone.

[It's not like I need the money, so turning lead into gold is kind of a waste for me.]

In any case, he got started by mixing two of the ingredients into a large mortar and grinding them into a fine powder. Once that was done, the next step was to mix in spring water and Ironroot Tree Sap in equal measures while continuously stirring the resulting paste to maintain a consistent texture. .

Before he did, however, Audra chirped loudly at him.

"Ah, I'm sorry. It's past time for your meal isn't it?" He apologized while digging around in his inventory. The little dragon had evidently been waiting patiently for close to an hour while he was working.

"Let's see. I've got some of those Razorback Boar steaks that we cooked last night. They aren't exactly fresh anymore, but should still be good. Since you've been so patient, I think it's only fair that I give you a little something extra."

After laying the steaks out for his gluttonous familiar, he reached back into his inventory with the intent of pulling out a mana core as a sort of desert.

While he was in the process of feeling around for one of the right size, Morris spoke up, a hint of alarm in his voice. "Uh, is that bowl supposed to be smoking like that?"

"What?" He looked over at his alchemical creation that he'd started working on. The fine powder at the bottom of the mortar had begun to turn brown and emit a noxious-looking cloud of green smoke.

"Crap! I forgot. It wasn't supposed to sit this long! There's a warning about it in the notes."

He ripped his arm out of his inventory, and shot forward to grab the ceramic bowl while wracking his memories for any hint on how to deal with the impending disaster. He vaguely recalled that Gail's instructions had explained that the two ingredients would react this way if not immediately treated with the next step in the process, but he couldn't remember if there was anything mentioned about what to do if he messed up.

[Should I just move on to the next part of the recipe and hope it works out? But I don't really know if the mixture has changed chemically. Adding the tree sap might actually make this worse.]

"Mike?! What are you doing? It's getting worse!" Morris interrupted Mike's internal deliberation with a panicked shout followed by a series of coughs as the cloud of smoke continued to get worse.

"I guess I'll solve this the old-fashioned way." He muttered while focusing his mana.

A narrow slit of glowing energy appeared in the air in front of him that widened to reveal the roiling chaos of interdimensional space. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the smoking concoction, along with the mortar itself, into the void between realms and then swiftly concentrated to close the rift.

"Phew…" He sighed once the immediate danger had passed, and then applied a little Air Magic to clear the workshop of remaining smoke. "Sorry about that."

Morris, who was on his hands and knees, coughed a few more times and then stood up. "I would have expected something like that out of Lily."

"My fault. I got distracted. You alright?"

The bard nodded after wiping his eyes. "I think so. I'm not exactly sure what you made, but it feels like it works by irritating your eyes, nose, and throat. You should try to remember that recipe. It could come in handy in combat sometime."

Mike stepped over and ran a wave of Life Magic through his friend just to be on the safe side. "Considering how valuable the parts are, I'm pretty sure I can come up with a cheaper way of making tear gas. There's probably an easier to handle version, too."

"Tear gas? I suppose that name makes sense. That gas did bring tears to my eyes."

He chuckled. "It's actually the name for something from my original world. Mainly used in riot control and breaking up mobs, but I think there are still some militaries that use something similar for combat. I've never experienced it myself, but I've heard it can be pretty rough if you get exposed."

"Huh. From what you've told me about your old world, I would have thought things like popular unrest would be uncommon."

"That's a debate that I don't really want to get into with you right now. Let's just say that Ea doesn't have a monopoly on injustice, tyranny, or persecution."

"Interesting…" The bard muttered under his breath. "I always figured a relative increase in technology, especially when it came to the distribution of information, would facilitate a more utopian style of social development. Evidently, that's not the case…On an unrelated note, should she be eating that?"

"Huh?" Mike looked over at Audra, who was just taking the last bites out of a large mana core-like object. It took him a few seconds to recognize it, and by then it was too late.

"AH! The broken dungeon core! Why did you eat that?!" He rushed over and picked up the little dragon. "We don't know what kind of effect it will have on you!"

He inspected his familiar both visually and through Life Magic, but as far as he could tell, there were no overt changes. Of course, that only counted if you ignored the fact that she'd eaten something close to four times her size without visibly changing.

Audra, for her part, gave a satisfied burp and flopped back into his hands lazily. Clearly, she had enjoyed the meal.

"Well, on the positive side, it doesn't seem to have hurt her." Morris commented while patting his shoulder reassuringly. "Considering the fact that she's able to ingest mana cores in the first place, it seems probable that she would be fine with a slightly different version of one. Besides, even regular dragons are known for being able to subsist on practically anything without problem, so I can only imagine a Wyrm would have an even more robust digestive system."

"You say that, but for all intents and purposes, Audra is still an infant. What if the dungeon core is too rich for her and makes her sick? Or has some kind of toxic element that negatively impacts her growth? I mean we still don't even really know what the heck it was. Who knows what kind of effect it is going to have on her?"

Almost as soon as he finished speaking, the little dragon in his arms started to glow, quickly filling the room with a harsh, blue-tinted light. Mike squinted his eyes shut, but was still able to feel the change as the weight in his arms suddenly increased.

After a few seconds, the glow faded.

He was now holding a small girl, who looked to be around four or five years old. With the exception of two prominent features, she could have easily been mistaken for a human child, although admittedly a rather cute one. However, her blue wavy hair and the pair of delicate horns emerging from her forehead made it clear that she was something else entirely.

While he was still making sense of the sudden transition, she looked up at him with a curious expression, opened her mouth, and chirped.

"You said she was basically an infant, but it looks like she's more of a small child." Morris quipped.

Mike glared at him. "Really? Jokes right now?"

"I don't think you need to worry. The legends are full of dragons capable of taking on human form. I'm sure this is perfectly normal. If it still bothers you, then you can ask that god who's always hanging out with Reber nowadays. Wyrms were virtually extinct before humans even came to this world, so if anyone might know anything about this, someone who lived during the Second Age is probably your best bet. Besides, we know he'll actually answer your questions."

Mike sighed. "Yeah, you're right. But before we do that, let's go find something for her to wear…On that note…do…do you think we need a diaper?"

The pair of young men stared down at the child for a few seconds before Morris answered. "Well, dragons are pretty intelligent creatures…surely they wouldn't…I mean even a young one should understand…"

"..."

They eventually decided to play it safe.

—-----------------------------------

"Oh my gods! She's adorable! Give her heere!" Sera yelled as soon as she caught sight of the transformed dragon.

Audra responded in her usual way by clambering up onto Mike's head to get out of reach. This was, of course, significantly more difficult in her current form, but she managed it nonetheless.

Mike, with his vision now fully obscured, sidestepped the Oracle thanks to a well-timed use of Aerosense and swiftly rose into the air to avoid any more attempts.

"Come on! Just a little hug! Please!"

Sighing, he ignored the mournful wailing below him and turned his attention to Aberth. The god was in his usual place in the demi realm, seated in a wooden rocking chair set beneath a large willow tree that Reber had grown in recent weeks. The treeman in question was comfortably situated in the chair's twin right next to it, showing no indication that he was aware of the horrible implications that would have for casual observers.

"So, as I was saying, she just suddenly turned into this after eating a damaged dungeon core." He gestured at the girl still affixed to his head, who was giggling slightly at his antics. "Do I need to be worried?"

Aberth glanced up at Audra, a slight smile on his bloodless lips. "That child is a remnant of the First Age, when mana was rampant and untamed. The greatest of her kin stood equal to the Creators themselves in terms of raw power. I highly doubt that ingesting even a Divine Item could do her lasting harm."

The god took a sip from a glass of amber liquid before continuing. "If anything, it likely served to stimulate her growth. Given the nature of her kind and the environment they evolved in, I suspect that her development has been stunted by the low mana density of this age. As such, she probably requires a regular intake of concentrated sources of mana, like the cores of monsters in order to maintain her good health."

Feeling a tinge of guilt, Mike took the rambunctious girl off his head, transferring her into his arms. "So, I should be giving her mana cores more often?"

"That is one solution, of course, but anything with a high level of mana would also work. For instance, the products young Reber has been making would likely suffice."

"...You aren't walking about his ċhėstnuts are you?"

This earned a chuckle from the treeman.

The god shook his head. "While they would serve, I was speaking of the contents of his garden. The plants grown in this demi-realm, under the care of a gifted druid are naturally rich in mana."

"The key is to talk to them, the plants I mean." Reber interjected. "You know how back on Earth, they say that plants grow better when you talk to them? Well, as a plant myself, I figured that I could do one better by speaking their language. Seems to work even better when I'm singing, too."

"Are you certain it didn't have something to do with the mana-infused water, artificially managed sunlight, and magically enhanced fertilizer that you were using?" Aberth asked calmly, although there was a hint of amusement in his voice.

"Well, sure, all that probably helps, but it's only like 90% of the effect. To get that last little bit you really need a nice song. But there are a lot of language barriers between different types of plants, so it can be a struggle to find the right lyrics. After a bit of trial and error, I found that tomato has the broadest base of appeal among vegetables. Which is strange considering how unapproachable they usually are. Of course, if you are trying to serenade a tree or bush, you can't do better than the humble pine…"

Suspecting that Reber would continue in this line for some time unless he was interrupted, Mike cleared his throat. "I see, and would you have any issue with me using some to feed Audra from now on?"

Dungeon delving was fairly easy for them at this point, but he suspected that her dietary needs would continue to increase as time wore on. Since the number of cores he could extricate from dungeons was technically finite, albeit in an abstract sense, having a renewable food source for the little dragon was high on his list of priorities.

"Hm?" The treeman paused his monologue distractedly. "Oh, sure. No problem. Or more like, please do. They've been getting overgrown ever since I introduced them to heavy metal."

"Right, I'll take you up on that. Thanks." Mike replied gratefully.

[One thing taken care of. Surely, with food, clothing and shelter covered, a young child can't need too much else, right?]

- Demon Contractor -

You have entered into a binding contract with a demonic entity. Whether through Spirit Magic or a ritual, you have nevertheless chosen to ally yourself with a being that is antagonistic to most forms of intelligent life. Moderate decrease to charisma when interacting with those that have a negative view of demons. Only takes effect when the other party is aware of the contracted entity.

------------------

Primary Skills:

—---------------

- Advanced Air Magic (Tier 3, Rank 3) –

One of the most basic forms of Elemental Magic. Air Magic allows the user to create and manipulate wind and air. It is characterized by its speed and constancy of motion, providing strong offensive power, mild defensive strength, and some utility. Higher skill levels increase the mana efficiency and power of the magic produced.

Rank 1 Effects: Air Mastery

- Air Mastery -

Advanced Air Mages master the inherent mobility of their chosen element, granting them unprecedented control over air. Allows users to control all forms of gaseous materials, and perform feats of delicacy and speed with them that would otherwise be impossible. Includes all lower skills.

Rank 3 Effects: As Swift as the Wind

- As Swift As the Wind-

Users of Advanced Air Magic can instinctively ease the burden of air resistance applied to their individual movements, allowing for far greater feats of speed than would otherwise be possible. Minor increase to Speed in all gaseous environments.

- Advanced Earth Magic (Tier 3, Rank 3) -

One of the most basic forms of Elemental Magic. Earth magic allows the user to create and manipulate earth and stone. It is characterized by its permanence and durability, providing the most effective defensive techniques of the four basic elements. Higher skill levels increase the mana efficiency and power of the magic produced.

Rank 1 Effects: Earth Mastery

- Earth Mastery -

Advanced Earth Mages master the inherent durability of their chosen element, granting them unprecedented control over earth. Allows users to control all forms of mineral materials, and perform feats of incredible delicacy and precision using created substances. Includes the effects of all lower skills.

Rank 3 Effects: As Solid as the Mountain

- As Solid as the Mountain -

Users of Advanced Earth Magic can instinctively reinforce the raw materials of their physical form, giving them far greater durability than others of their kind. Minor increase to Defense.

- Basic Space Magic (Tier 3, Rank 3) -

One of the most advanced forms of Elemental Magic. Space Magic allows the user to manipulate the very fabric of reality to produce a number of effects. Characterized by its versatility, it is well known for its use in teleportation, extra-dimensional storage, and spatial distortions. Higher levels of skill increase mana efficiency and the accuracy of space manipulations.

Rank 3 Effects: Personal Storage

- Personal Storage -

Through their increasing understanding and mastery of their chosen element, Space Mages develop the ability to subtly alter the space around them in such a manner that it can be used to store things indefinitely. Higher levels of skill increase the capacity of the storage. Current size: 5 cubic meters

*Note: Unknown error affecting storage size and properties.*

Intermediate Alchemy (Tier 2, Rank 1)

Alchemy is the process of altering magic and mundane materials into finished products. Although the methods vary based on the particular recipe, all alchemical products bear some trace of magical influence. Allows users to create alchemical items, retain memories of recipes, and develop an intuitive understanding of the subtle aspects of the craft. Current mutation rate: 1.5%.

Rank 1 Effect: Infusion

- Infusion -

Skilled alchemists inevitably develop a means of imbuing their consumable creations with a portion of their personal mana, allowing them to both enhance and subtly alter the effects of said creations. While the nature of these changes are limited by both a user's mana reserves and skill level, it is nevertheless possible to radically reinvent an alchemical item.

- Intermediate Conjuration Magic (Tier 2, Rank 1) –

Allows the user to conjure objects and creatures based on mental images, summoning them into existence for a limited duration. Higher levels of skill improve mana efficiency.

Rank 1 Effects: Conjurer's Sigil

- Conjurer's Sigil -

Users of Conjuration Magic have the ability to summon a wide variety of creatures and objects related to their own personal affinity, albeit limited by their mental strength and focus. By utilizing a specialized sigil, however, they can register particular summons with the System. So long as that sigil is used during the summoning process, conjurers can ensure that the intended object or creature is summoned. Minor decrease to the mana cost of conjuring registered summons. Number of registered summons is limited to the total number of skills ranks. Current 0/6.

- Intermediate Spirit Magic (Tier 2, Rank 2) -

Where other magic users rely on their own inherent mana to shape the world around them, Spirit Mages borrow the power of spiritual beings through the use of System enforced contracts. In exchange for a sacrifice of some kind, Spirit Mages can channel and utilize a portion of the natural abilities of their contracted entities. Additionally, at the cost of an additional sacrifice, said contracted entities can be temporarily manifested to act independently from their contractor. Higher levels of skill increase the efficiency and potency of borrowed abilities and manifested entities. The total number of contracts a mage can have is limited by skill ranks. More powerful contracted entities require a greater allocation of contract slots. Current contracts 7/7 (1).

*Note: Due to the strength of the current contracted entity, skill was fȯrċɨbŀƴ raised until contract capacity was reached.*

Rank 1 Effects: Temporary Contract

- Temporary Contract -

Spirit Mages gain their abilities by forming contracts with spirits or entities capable of ȧssuming a spiritual form. However, it is not always in the mage's best interest to form a large number of contracts due to the ċumulative effects of sacrifices. As such, skilled Spirit Mages learn to form temporary contracts to give them greater versatility. Allows the user to form a number of temporary contracts up to their contract limit. These contracts will expire after 24 hours or when fȯrċɨbŀƴ ended by the contractor, whichever is sooner.

- Bind Familiar (Tier 3, Rank 3) -

Through the use of an ancient contract sealed in blood, you have bound a magical creature into your service. This contract connects the souls and destinies of its participants, binding them to one another.

Rank 1 Effects: Soul Link

-Soul Link -

The bond created between master and familiar links their souls together. This allows both participants to gather a rough feeling for where the other is, within a set distance. It also allows particularly strong emotions to be transmitted along the link.

Rank 3 Effects: Resonant Enhancement

- Resonant Enhancement -

As the relationship between master and familiar is typically one of a stronger party subordinating a weaker party, this creates a disparity in the relative power of both individuals. However, once the bond between them reaches a certain strength, the resulting flow of energy serves to equalize this imbalance to a degree. Familiars receive a minor increase to all attributes that are lower than their master's.

—-------------------

Secondary Skills:

—-------------------

- Intermediate Summoning Magic (Tier 2, Rank 1) –

The most basic form of Summoning Magic. It allows users access to magic skills for the three primary forms of Summoning Magic: Conjuration, Calling, and Binding. Higher levels of skill provide a bonus on mana efficiency and potency. This is a Prerequisite and Limiter skill for all other Summoning Magic skills.

Rank 1 Effects: Durable Summons

- Durable Summons -

Long practice in the art of summoning leads to an increased understanding of the way in which mana is converted into matter. Summoners can utilize this understanding to reinforce their summons. Minor increase to the Endurance of all summoned creatures, and the Durability of all summoned objects.

- Basic Instruction (Tier 1, Rank 2) -

The skill of imparting knowledge and improving the abilities of others. When ȧssuming a teacher-student relationship with another sentient creature, this skill helps guide both parties towards more effective instruction. Provides a scaled, minor enhancement to the rate of skill improvement and acquisition for all students. Higher levels of skill increase both the bonus and the number of students that can be maintained. Current students: 2/2 (Seraphina, Morris)

- Intermediate Blacksmithing (Tier 2, Rank 2) -

The art of fashioning a variety of implements and items out of forged metal. Moderate system correction to practitioner's knowledge and ability in regards to smithing. Functions as the Prerequisite and Limiter for all other forms of smithing.

- Basic Weaponsmithing (Tier 2, Rank 1) -

Practiced smiths can learn the art of forging metal into weapons of war. Minor system correction to practitioner's knowledge and ability in regards to smithing. Minor enhancement to the durability and effect of weapons crafted by the practitioner.

- Mana Barrier (Tier 2, Rank 1) -

By manipulating their natural mana reserves, users of this skill can create a barrier of pure mana around themselves and their surroundings. Due to the unstable nature of raw mana, it is difficult to maintain this barrier for long periods of time. Higher levels of skill improve efficiency, duration, and durability of the barrier.

—-----------------

Passive Skills:

—----------------

- Intermediate Curse Resistance (Tier 3, Rank 1) -

Frequent exposure to the effects of curse magic have rendered the user more resistant to them. Moderate resistance to curses.

- Large Endurance Enhancement (Tier 3, Rank 1) -

Through physical training the user has increased his/her body's natural limits. Provides a large enhancement to Endurance.
