27. Blow My Mind

‘Diapers? What!’

A man who was about 30 years old didn’t know sanitary pads. I was amused by him!

Knowing that he had made a silly mistake, Ling Xiao was depressed. He didn’t say anything and lowered his head to avoid my eyes the whole night.

Ms. Liu burst out laughing and kept teasing her son. She told me every silly thing Ling Xiao had done in these 20-odd years.

When she was tired of laughing, she washed up and then went to bed.

After returning to my room, I tossed and turned. I took out the bottle of sleeping pills but found it was empty. I took the last pill yesterday.

I was like a girl living in the next door who was happy and cheerful in the presence of Ms. Liu. I always chuckled delightedly before her, but I couldn’t help but think of my unborn child when I was alone.

I had been suffering from insomnia since the day I lost my child. I had to take sleeping pills.

After tossing and turning for more than an hour, I still couldn’t fall asleep. Every time I closed my eyes, my mind was in a mess.

I got out of bed. Wearing my pajama, I went to the kitchen and gulped down a bottle of whisky.

It was strong. The liquor went to my head. I tottered along the corridor and turned off all the lights. I stumbled into the room. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I went out like a light.

Last night, I fell into a deep sleep. In the morning, the sunlight filtered through the window and fell on my face. I stretched and touched something.

‘Who?’

My heart skipped a beat. I opened my eyes hurriedly. A handsome face appeared in front of me.

‘But… why do I sleep with Ling Xiao?’

Bellowing inwardly, I jumped up from the bed. I was so nervous that my teeth trembled.

Recalling that I was drunk, I began to doubt that whether I broke into his room or not. Too much liquor could easily lead to serious trouble! I regretted.

Before Ling Xiao woke up, I tiptoed to the door. When I opened the door, I saw Ms. Liu. She was about to knock.

I flushed and stammered. “Ms. Liu, I…” I didn’t know how to explain.

Before I could finish my words, Ms. Liu held my hand and led me to walk outside, “Huan, let’s do morning exercise. I will teach you square dance.”

‘Square dance? Well, I’m not that old.’

‘Besides, why wasn’t Ms. Liu surprised when she saw me come out from her son’s room?’

I looked back and saw the pink carpet which I bought yesterday! That meant I didn’t break into his room. This was my room!

Realizing that, I became furious. ‘Ling Xiao, you bastard! Why do you sleep in my bed? Are you fucking insane?’

What happened next confirmed my speculation. Ling Xiao was indeed insane!

When I was talking with Ms. Liu, Ling Xiao got up on the wrong side of the bed, “Shut the fuck up!”

My heart was pounding and my face turned pale.

Ms. Liu became pallid.

We didn’t say anything as if we were struck by a flash of lightning and became two burnt statues.

“How… How do you…” Ms. Liu was shocked. She stared at me.

I was embarrassed. My heart sank.

To be honest, I had already forgotten the warmth my family had given me. However, I felt the warmth these days in Ms. Liu’s home.

In my heart, Ms. Liu was like my family. She was not just my employer.

Except for my mom, there wasn’t any elder who took care of me like Ms. Liu. She was a respectable lady in my mind.

However, I knew I couldn’t stay here because this had happened.

“Ms. Liu, I know it’s useless to explain, but there’s nothing between Ling Xiao and me. Please believe me. Thank you for taking me in. I will go right now. Sorry for the trouble.”

As soon as I turned around, Ms. Liu stopped me, “Wait!”

She then pulled me toward the bedside, and hit her son on the head with a pillow, “You jerk! Apologize to Huan right now!”

‘What does she mean? Apologize to me?’

I was confused. ‘Did I mishear?’

I thought Ms. Liu would blame me for seducing her son. I didn’t expect that she didn’t reproach me but asked her son to make an apology.

I was moved. My eyes turned red. ‘Ms. Liu’s so kind to me.’

Ling Xiao was dozy. Ms. Liu continued to hit him on the face. I stopped her hurriedly.

“Ms. Liu, wait! We can talk about this, right?”

She was exasperated at Ling Xiao, “You stupid thing. You have nyctalopia. Why did you turn off the lights in the living room and the corridor? You broke into Huan’s room. Apologize to her immediately!”
