The red popsicle slipped through her fingers onto her l.a.p, staining her emerald green pleated skirt as it melted. Park Danbi stared at the scarlet maple leaves on the ground.

The saffron sun rays were disappearing into violet hues in the sky whilst the chill of the evening was setting in the air. They were in O Park in Seoul to celebrate their three-year-anniversary of their relationship.

She curled her toes.

Maybe she heard it wrong. There was no reason for them to break up.

Gu Yi Won finished his Popsicle. His gaze lingered on the stains on her skirt for a moment. He muttered under his breath, "Clumsy."

As he was about to stand up and leave, she grabbed his wrist and asked with a shaky voice, "Are you mad at me?"

Gu Yi Won swiftly removed her hand from his wrist. "We are done."

"Gu Yi Won, where are you going?" Park Danbi ran after him and grasped his arm. Why was he acting like this suddenly? "We dated for three years? How could you… Did I do something wrong?"

"Don't make it hard for me," Gu Yi Won barked at her.

"I don't understand..." She blinked her eyes. Yesterday, they left school together. He kissed her before he went home. While she was still in love with him, he was breaking up with her.

"I have someone else." His eyes darted away, avoiding her gaze when the teardrop rolled out of her prominent caramel brown eyes. He clenched his hand into a fist but he kept up a straight face,

"My heart had been wavering for a while... She's so different from you, Danbi. I couldn't help myself."

Couldn't help himself? She let go of his arm. Her honey voice turned cold and sharp as ice. "How different is she from me?"

"She's not a frozen fish like you." He gave her a look over and let out a low mocking laugh. "Her body doesn't smell and --"

He paused when a sob escaped her rosy lips. She covered her face with her hands, trying to hold herself back from crying. Gu Yi Won inhaled sharply and looked away. "She told me that she liked me. So I want to end this meaningless thing with you before I start something with her."

So cruel! Park Danbi fell onto her knees and lowered her head. Tresses of her long dark hair fell forward, hiding her face from him. Her soft sobs cracked the barriers of his heart.

He pursed his lips, raising his hand toward her trembling shoulder. Their relationship had ended. Breaking up was the best solution. He shouldn't...

"Did she not know that you have a girlfriend?" She whispered the question.

Taking a step away from her, he retracted his hand and slipped it inside his blue jacket's pockets. "Who doesn't know that we're going out? She saw the photos that you posted on my profile on SNS -- Acting clingy and all... You're annoying, Park Danbi. I don't want you in my life anymore."

"I don't want us to end, Gu Yi Won." She begged him, "I will change. I will become better than that girl. I will--"

"From now on, you and I are strangers," He interrupted her with a dark voice. "I would appreciate it if you stay away from me at school."

"Stay away?" She widened her eyes. "How could I stay away from you? You told me that you loved me. My body smells? You never said it before. I am not pretty? You told me that you didn't like pretty girls. I am still the same girl. How did you change so suddenly?"

How? He didn't bother to answer her. The change was inevitable. Since he made a choice, he would see it through till the end. "Who do you think that you are? Look at yourself in the mirror. You don't deserve to stand by my side, Park Danbi."

"I will change for you," She said to him frantically, gripping his sleeve. "I will fix all of my flaws. I love you so much. I will do anything for you. You know that."

"Pathetic." He scoffed at her, "Who would want someone like you? Go home."

Not waiting for her reply, he slapped her hand off him and marched away. She stayed frozen on the spot for a long time. What could have gone wrong? Could feelings change like this? All the promises were a lie. Did she really smell bad?

That winter night was unusually cold. Heavy rain prattled on the ground. Her wet honey brown sweater stuck to her like a second skin. Despite the cold, her eyes were stinging hot. She did not want to cry anymore. But her tears kept flowing

With a ruined makeup and a broken heart, she didn't remember how long it took her to get to the study dorm. Too weary to change her clothes, she lied down on the bed in the dark. 

"It hurts a lot." And she wanted him to feel pain. A sinister thought crossed her mind. "If that girl is gone, will you come back to me?"

Though it rained all night, the sky was still covered with dark clouds.

Park Danbi looked at herself in the mirror. She pressed her hand on the red tie over her white shirt to smoothen out the creases for a moment. The edge of her ash-grey skirt rested a few inches above her knees. She tied her long dark hair into a ponytail.

He did not reply to any of her messages.

After fixing her straight bangs that were casting a slight shadow over her swollen eyes, she evaluated herself in silence. 

ith an average height and a slender frame, she had peachy skin and a mole near the right corner of her pale pink lips. Her caramel brown eyes didn't have double eyelids. Was that the reason why he did not find her pretty?

'When I look into your eyes, I feel like I am looking at the infinite universe.'

Those were his words.

As she leaned closer to the mirror and looked for her flaws, she knitted her brows and touched her small ears. Just a few days ago, he told her that he found her ears so cute that he wanted to bite them.

So, she couldn't understand what could change in a day.

However, she understood one thing. The devil tempted Eve and Adam into eating the forbidden apple. Her Yi Won must have been seduced by an evil witch. She must make him see the truth that no one in the world could love him more than her.

She sniffed her arm. Did her body smell really bad? She took care of her body well. They had hugged plenty of times. He had kissed her nearly every day since they started going out.

A suppressed whimper escaped her mouth. She gripped the corner of the table to support herself. Teardrops fell on the table. No, she couldn't understand why he broke her heart like that yesterday.

She wiped her face with her sleeves. Luckily, she hadn't put on the makeup yet. She didn't feel like doing it anyway.
