I was really confused. Determining my fate was much more difficult than choosing a weapon. My whole life depended on my decision. Each of the options was attractive in its own way. Each of them was legendary.

For example, blood mages. I'd never seen a living representative of this group. They didn't need weapons and armor, they could pump and store their own blood. They were able to create bloody Golems. However, blood mages weren't loved either in the Empire or on its outskirts.

Warlocks. Oulsast, sitting in front of me, wasn't the most capable of this group, and yet he possessed incredible power, supported by the HAND itself. His assistants were also terrifying. These small monstrous creatures could be very dangerous.

As a child, I saw Oulsast dealing with a gang of bandits who mistook him for easy prey. A huge flock of spiders attacked the gang leader and climbed into his ears, mouth, nose, and went out through his eye sockets.

I didn't want that fate. The power and respect of the warlocks attracted me, but the prospect of constantly wearing a flock of spiders on my person didn't seem so appealing.

What if these insects rebel and take me for their enemy…?

Rangers... I liked them. These guys were great shooters, they could hit a target from a hundred feet away, no matter who or what they were aiming at — a squirrel or a person. There was a time when the rangers used only bows and crossbows. This weapon was weak and could hardly damage the enemy's armor.

When the rangers received guns, they became much more powerful. The only problem was that the reloading of a gun took too long—almost a minute. Therefore, if the guys missed, they had little chance of survival.

Black guards. To be honest, I was attracted by the reliability of heavy plate armor from an early age. My father repaired them a couple of times after fighting in the wild lands of the orcs. When I took the guard's gauntlet in my hands, I was astonished. A blow with such a glove would be fatal, I could also grab an enemy blade with it.

The guards could easily bear blade strikes and arrows, but gunshots were as dangerous for them as for the rest. If I had the ability to regenerate, I could even survive after the first shot.

I chose.

My muscles were cramped. The black fog with dancing lightning surrounded my chair. I tried to jump up but I fell back, paralyzed.

The magic penetrated my mind and body and changed them. It was incredibly unpleasant. It was over in a minute.

"Wow!" I exclaimed and immediately realized that I had completely forgotten about the others. I could have consulted with my parents, but I made the decision by myself. Judging by their appearance, they'd already received the MESSAGE of my decision. And even though my mother and father were no longer responsible for me, they should have known about such successes. But the chief…

Turning around, I realized that I had done something stupid. Oulsast was grinning widely as if I'd given him a birthday gift.

I was now completely at his disposal! He was the chief of this area, which meant that all of the guards had to obey his orders. In making my decision, I completely forgot about the current rules, and now I had to pay for my impulsiveness.

"Congratulations!" Oulsast rubbed his hands. "You've made your choice and determined your destiny. I'm going to teach you something. You'll be flogged. Ten lashes will be enough, to begin with…"

Suddenly his smile disappeared. Not believing, he repeatedly read the MESSAGE that came up, moving his eyes from side to side, and then he sank in his chair and waved his hand in my direction. The MESSAGE appeared before my eyes.

You have a new assignment

Recruit Michael, as an outstanding fighter who has received +2 bonus at the start, you must go to the manor of Baron Riny for reconnaissance. You have twenty days at your disposal.

The destination point is marked on the map. The route is determined. Get on with it! For the sake of the HAND!

"What is reckon... regcont... ugh, reconnaissance?"

"Let's go home, son, I'll explain everything on the way," my father patted me on the shoulder.

"Where are you going? I'm not letting you leave!" the chief shouted.

"Your power is over, Oulsast," my mother smiled, "My husband and I have never obeyed you; now you can't control our son either."

"Have you decided to get rid of me? I guess you are going to rebel…"

"Do you oppose the will of magic, Oulsast? We're leaving. Goodbye, everyone. We hope we see you soon."

"I congratulate you on such a wonderful son," Lyzariya whispered, "May the HAND bless him!"

"I congratulate you as well," Glavasd nodded, "Good soldiers are always needed in the Empire. I hope your son will become one of the best. He is gifted."

"You will regret this," the chief said gloomily.

My father just grinned, came over to me and helped me stand up. I felt terrible, I could barely move my arms and legs. I didn't feel any bonuses in strength or stamina and I couldn't even walk!

Although, last year the day of a.d.u.l.thood was also celebrated in Chief Hall. Then no one was able to walk out of there on their own. Maybe I was lucky.
