10. It Feels So Great to Just Think about It

Translator: Annsmiley

After the farce in the morning, Ji Ran knew that they wouldn’t possibly let him eat with them.

So, the first thing he needed to do was to figure out a way to feed himself.

However, it was not as simple as building a separate stove. He needed to make sure that he had enough daily necessities, such as firewood, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and tea leaves. Firewood was everywhere, so that wouldn’t pose a problem for him, but he needed to buy the rest with money. And the problem was that he had no money, not even a penny.

“What’s wrong? You look worried.” Seeing that Ji Ran was sighing and frowning, Lu Zhen asked.

“I’m going out for a walk,” Ji Ran said as he stood up. He believed that he was the master of his own life and that if he just sat here at home, he would get nothing.

“I’ll go with you,” Lu Zhen stood up as well.

Ji Ran did not respond. He was not familiar with this place, so it was good to have Lu Zhen with him.

After getting out of the group of thatched sheds of the Lu Family, Ji Ran looked around and realized that the scenery out here was quite picturesque and that the environment was really good. Behind him were big mountains and he was facing a river. Based on Feng Shui, aka Chinese geomancy, it was a perfect location. No wonder this place was richer than the village where the Ji Family lived. The good environment was a gift from the nature and even if people in other places were jealous, they could do nothing about it.

“Is there fish in this river?” The two of them came to the riverside. Ji Ran stood there and looked down into the river.

“Yes,” Lu Zhen said, “During the dry season, the villagers love to fish here. When they catch a fish, they will take it to the bazaar and sell it or cook and eat it themselves. However, it is not easy to catch a fish in this river, and water snakes often show up here. In previous years, there were villagers who would bathe and fish in the river. Now other than some daring children, no one dares to go into the water.”

“Didn’t you leave home when you were very young? How come you know so much about this river?” After a while, Ji Ran tilted his head and squinted at Lu Zhen.

“I’ve overheard the villagers and my family talk about it recently,” Lu Zhen bent over to pick up a stone and threw it into the river. “Splash” and the stone caused circular ripples before it dropped into the bottom of the river.

Ji Ran smiled and turned around to look at the lush mountains behind the Lu Family’s thatched sheds.

Mountains in ancient times were primitive. And there was no shortage of wild beasts. It would be dangerous to get into the mountains, but it was still a way to make some money. Although Ji Ran was not sure about it, he knew that with such large mountains in the background, there must be no shortage of hunters in the village.

As Ji Ran was both thin and weak, it was impossible for him to go hunting himself, but he could always set a trap and catch a rabbit or a pheasant. In his previous life, Ji Ran was born in the mountains, so he had done things like this before. Although he did not expect to get filthy rich through it, at least he would not be starved.

Now that he had a plan, Ji Ran wasn’t that anxious anymore. Anyway, he came out here to familiarize himself with the environment. The top priority was to get some soil and stones so that he could build a stove. As for daily necessities, he would figure out a way to get them later.

With that in mind, they went back to their yard. But after looking everywhere, Ji Ran found that he couldn’t even find a suitable tool.

‘Gosh!’

‘We’re really poor!’

And, Lu Zhen told him that he could get soil anywhere, but he would need to buy the stones from a stonemason in the village.

So, Ji Ran wasn’t even able to build a stove now.

‘But I can be creative about this. Since I can’t build a decent one for the time being, I can still make a simple one, right?’

‘There is a clearing of moderate size behind the house. I can dig a hole with my hands there and when it’s done, I can put the pan over it and I’ll be able to cook. And the clearing is next to a mountain cliff. I’ll push two wooden posts into the cliff and I’ll make a shed, so I won’t need to worry even when it rains. As for the fact that I don’t have the money to buy the kichenware, it won’t be a problem either. I can just barbecue the food. Though, due to the fact that I don’t have any seasoning, the food might taste funny, I’ll just live with it for now.’

It didn’t take them much time or effort to build a simple stove. Although there were no tools, Ji Ran had got a ghost. Lu Zhen looked so complacent when Ji Ran asked him to help dig a hole as if, with a wooden stick, he could move the Earth, and digging a hole was just a cakewalk for him. And with that wooden stick, he could do the work that only a shovel would do. That was the good thing about a ghost.

It was still quite early even after they built the stove and the shed, As the saying went, time was money. Ji Ran did not delay. He held Lu Zhen’s hand and ran up the mountain. He had only a wooden stick in his hand; yet he claimed that they were going hunting!

However, Lu Zhen didn’t object. He just followed him up the mountain.

“Hey, I thought ghosts were just shadows. But you can actually dig a hole with a stick. That’s just awesome! “Ji Ran panted all the way he climbed the mountain, but somehow he still managed to talk fluently.

“It’s just my psychokinesis,” Lu Zhen smiled.

“Sigh, I suddenly realize that I am a fool,” For a while, Ji Ran didn’t say anything and suddenly he blurted out.

Lu Zhen couldn’t follow him, so he turned his head and looked at Ji Ran in confusion.

He heard Ji Ran say, “It didn’t take you much effort to dig a hole. Then you must be good at hunting too. And catching an animal will be nothing to you as well. So why am I still thinking about digging a pit and setting a trap? I’m a fool indeed!”

“You’re quite right about it,” Lu Zhen nodded. “But you were so excited just now when you said we’d go hunting, You don’t want to come all the way here and do nothing, right? Why not try hunting yourself? It’s gonna be fun!”

“Just forget it. All we have is a wooden stick. We don’t even have one single tool that can be used for hunting. How are we gonna dig a pit and set a trap?” Ji Ran shook his head. “Although we could try, you’ll still be the one who do most of the work. So why bother? Let’s just make this simple. When we see the prey, you’ll just enter its body, control it and make it hit the tree hard, then I’ll pick it up. We don’t even have to fight with those wild beasts. You’ll be responsible for making the animals bump themselves against the trees, and I’ll be responsible for picking those dead animals up and taking them back. Hahahaha…” Wow. It felt so great to just think about it!

Lu Zhen looked at Ji Ran helplessly, and after a while, he said, “Okay.”
