9. I Took It

Translator: Annsmiley

“Ah, my dear!” Granny Lu came to her senses and screamed like a pig that was going to be slaughtered. She stumbled to the unconscious old man on the ground and threw herself at him. “What are you all waiting for? Come and carry your father back to his bedroom! Does justice even exist? You’re a thief who stole from us and you even beat us! You’ve got no conscience!”

Faced with the old woman’s slandering, Ji Ran didn’t take any action towards it, as he had got tons of witnesses. Many people were standing at the door and watching as it all happened. They weren’t blind and they could prove that he didn’t beat anyone.

With that in mind, Ji Ran turned up the corners of his mouth, and suddenly he laughed sarcastically. So in this case, should he thank Leng Xianglian?

Hearing Granny Lu’s yell, the two sons picked up the old man and quickly left. The whole family left as fast as they came, just like a storm which made quite a mess when it passed, leaving only the survivor telling others how fortunate they were. What a wonderful show!

However, now that the farce where the Lu Family made a fool out of themselves was over, everyone’s gaze fell on Ji Ran, the newlywed “daughter-in-law” of the Lu Family. Some were exploring possiblities; some were snickering at Ji Ran; some showed sympathy for him; and some thought him shameless. In short, they were all gossiping about him.

Ji Ran was not interested in being stared at as if he were a monkey in a zoo. He glanced coldly at the group of people who were whispering at the door, turned back and walked into the room. The moment the door was closed, the window on one side was blown open by the wind. Then a black shadow came in like a flying sword.

“Meow!” The black cat leaped onto the table and circled the tablet with elegant steps. Then it lay down on its stomach, tilted its head towards Ji Ran and meowed.

“Lu Zhen?” Ji Ran also tilted his head, looked at the black cat and asked tentatively.

“Meow!”

Feeling encouraged, the black cat suddenly jumped and threw itself into Ji Ran’s arms.

The last time the black cat jumped towards him, Ji Ran fell hard on the ground. The experience was so painful that Ji Ran couldn’t help but flinch. He took two steps back cautiously and slapped the black cat onto the ground.

“Go away! I won’t give you the chance to kick my face again!” Ji Ran rolled his eyes, sat down and sighed, “The people in this family are really good at making trouble out of nothing. Every day they’ll manage to do something to ruin my day. My life here is so damn hard.”

While Ji Ran was immersed in his own thoughts, the black cat disappeared. Then the door opened and Lu Zhen walked in.

“You…” Ji Ran was stunned when he saw Lu Zhen standing in the light. Then he remembered the black cat who had kicked his nose. He couldn’t help but twitch the corner of his mouth. “Ghosts are wilful!”

“You are not afraid of me anymore?” Lu Zhen chuckled and sat down next to Ji Ran.

Ji Ran shrugged and did not answer him.

‘What’s there to be afraid of? You aren’t covered with blood. Neither do you have a long tongue sticking out of your mouth. You head isn’t severed from your body. Neither do you have an open belly with your intestines hanging outside. You look just like any alive person. Except that you press me on the bed and have sex with me at night, you never do anything to harm me. At first, I was scared and that was my instinct to feel that way. Now I’m used to it. Besides, aren’t I also a lonely soul from another world? So in a sense, we are similar. So there’s nothing to be afraid of!‘

Ji Ran was again immersed in his own thoughts when his hand suddenly felt cold. Turned out Lu Zhen was holding his hand.

Well…This was really awkward.

Ji Ran was startled for a moment; then he felt uncomfortable and instinctively broke his hand free from Lu Zhen’s grasp.

Lu Zhen didn’t insist and he just let him go, “I’m sorry that you have gone through all of this.”

Ji Ran knew that he was talking about what had happened between him and the Lu Family. He sighed and shook his head, but he was thinking about what he should do next. He was completely unfamiliar with this world, and things were different here from what he already knew. In fact, travelling back in time and living in ancient times was not as wonderful as it was described in the novels. It was in fact confusing and frustrating.

“Actually…” Lu Zhen clenched his fist, put it against his lips and coughed awkwardly, “I am the one who took the eggs and flour.”

Ji Ran turned around and looked at him in shock.

Lu Zhen looked away from him. After a while, he turned back to look at Ji Ran. “I used them to make egg noodles for you.”

Ji Ran, “…”

“Well…” Seeing that Ji Ran thought it unbelievable, Lu Zhen felt embarrassed, “I didn’t expect her to find out about it.”

Ji Ran was speechless. The only thing he had in mind right now was: Poor people counted every grain of their rice every day!

Damn it! Turned out he didn’t steal them. He ate them!

Thinking of it that way, Ji Ran felt that he wouldn’t ever be happy again.
