19. Teach Ji Xiaohu a Lesson

Translator: Annsmiley

“Ho, just now I was wondering why you looked so familiar. It turns out you’re my cousin who is married to a dead man.”

Ji Xiaohu was a country bumpkin, but he wore impressive clothes and jewellery, and held a folding fan in his hand, which made him look like a dandy. Those who didn’t know him might think that he was a young master from a rich family. But in fact, he was a rascal who idled about, gambled, and whored.

“This is a clothing store. Why are you here? To buy clothes?” Ji Xiaohu circled Ji Ran and sized him up. “Come on, you’re a man and your husband is dead. There’s no point in puttiing on good clothes. No matter how well-dressed you are, no one will be there to admire it. So instead of wasting your money on buying new clothes, you should give your money to me. It just so happens that I’m tight on money right now. So why not just give your money to me now?”

“Ji Xiaohu.” Ji Ran sneered and deliberately raised his hand to the top of Ji Xiaohu’s head. “Compared to your height, your face is quite small. There must be spare cloth in the clothing store. How about I give you two pennies? So you can go buy a piece of cloth and cover your face with it.”

Ji Xiaohu was both ignorant and incompetent. All he did every day was to eat, drink, and have fun. So it took him quite a while before he realized that Ji Ran was being sarcastic, and his face immediately darkened.

“Damn you, bastard! You’ve got the nerve to say that I’m shameless?!” Ji Xiaohu waved his fist and was ready to hit Ji Ran’s face. “Who do you think you are? How dare you say something like that!”

Ji Xiaohu threw a punch, but Ji Ran raised his hand and caught Ji Xiaohu’s hand. At the same time, Lu Zhen kicked Ji Xiaohu’s knees. Ji Xiaohu, who didn’t know what was going on, felt that his knees got limp. And “thud”, he knelt down in front of Ji Ran.

Ji Ran let go of his hand, bent down and patted Ji Xiaohu’s face while Ji Xiaohu broke out in a cold sweat. “Now you’re doing the right thing. You realize that you did something wrong and you apologize for it. Since you’re so sincere that you knelt down, I’ll let all this go and I forgive you.”

“You…” Ji Xiaohu suddenly raised his head and glared at Ji Ran. His eyes were filled with viciousness, “How dare you hit me!”

“When did I ever hit you? I just blocked your punch. So many people are watching us. They can prove that you knelt down on your own. Wait, didn’t you fall to your knees because you realized that you were wrong?” Ji Ran looked confused and blinked in a complete innocent way, “I also wondered why you did this and I was taken aback. It turns out that you meant to frame me!”

After saying that, Ji Ran moved to one side, pretending to be terrified. And he looked to the left and then to the right in fear. He turned around and ran into the store like a rabbit, leaving Ji Xiaohu kneeling there alone. And instantly, he became the target of everyone else’s attention. He only felt that he had never been so embarrassed his whole life and he wanted to tear Ji Ran into pieces.

Ji Xiaohu gritted his teeth and when he came to his senses, he found that everyone was pointing and laughing at him. Instantly, his face turned completely red due to embarrassment. However, he didn’t know what had happened just now. He only felt a sharp pain in his knees and he didn’t have the strength to stand up and leave. Seeing him kneeling in front of the shop like a beggar, two shop assistants thought it was not good for business, so they came out, lifted him up and put him down somewhere away from the shop. Ji Xiaohu stumbled, took a few steps backward, leaned against the wall and stabilized himself. When his knees didn’t hurt that much, he shuffled away while swearing.

Meanwhile, Ji Ran was not affected by Ji Xiaohu at all. He got dazzled the moment he entered the store. As a transmigrator, it was the first time that he saw so many authentic ancient clothes. To him, everything in the store was breathtaking. And he liked all of them.

The shop assistant here was way more professional than the shop assistant in the pharmacy. They didn’t judge people by their looks and they didn’t ignore Ji Ran just because he was wearing a shabby outfit. Instead, they greeted him enthusiastically and introduced the clothes to Ji Ran passionately.

However, no matter what the shop assistant said. Lu Zhen fixed his gaze on a white robe.

“You like this one?” While the shop assistant was facing Ji Ran with his back, Ji Ran quickly lowered his voice and asked his invisible husband Lu Zhen.

Lu Zhen said only one word, “Yes.”

Ji Ran glanced at Lu Zhen who looked quite serious and he was amused, but he still started to look at the robe carefully. The robe was plain-colored, and the fabric was not that good either. Compared to those flowery and patterned ones, it was unremarkable, but the golden embroidery with the shapes of water and cloud on the cuffs and around the buttons was particularly exquisite.

“Simple, low-key, but exquisite. It suits you. You will look great in it,” Lu Zhen commented.

“On which occasion will I be able to wear that?” In fact, Ji Ran liked the outfit, too. But Ji Ran was a poor farmer. The robe didn’t go with his identity, “I won’t be able to wear it even if I buy it. It will be inconvenient for me to wear this and do farm work.” Actually he intended to buy some farmer clothes.

Lu Zhen looked at the robe unwaveringly. “Wear it on the bed.” Then he would take it off!

Now it was Ji Ran’s turn to feel embarrassed. The feelings he had right there and then was simply unspeakable. And, what was even worse was that he actually did as Lu Zhen said and bought that robe.

Uhh… They were shopping for sexy clothes at a normal clothing store. How unbelievable!

Of course, Ji Ran didn’t only buy that robe. In order to have something to wear when he was doing farm work, Ji Ran also bought two sets of coarse farmer clothes and two pairs of cloth shoes. Later, before they left the bazaar, he also bought two pairs of straw sandals.

After buying the clothes, the two men went home.

On the way, they didn’t encounter a donkey cart or a bullock cart, so they could only walk all the way back. It had been a busy day. And Ji Ran got hungry before he reached home. He immediately took out the packed chicken and ate it, but the meat was cold and greasy. It could make him full but it didn’t really taste good. Even so, Ji Ran did not complain and he enjoyed it quite a lot.

Seeing Ji Ran chowing down the chicken, people might think the chicken must taste extremely delicious. Even Lu Zhen, a ghost, couldn’t help but feel like drooling.

“Drink some water, otherwise you’ll choke,” Lu Zhen took the bottle made of a bamboo tube off from Ji Ran’s waist, opened the lid and handed it to him. They made this bottle from a piece of broken bamboo that they picked up in the mountain yesterday. The piece of bamboo was small and delicate. Someone must have cut it off and thrown it away. They were lucky to come across it. Although its diameter was just a little bit longer than that of a flute, it was still useful.

Ji Ran felt like he was choking on the meat, so he took two large gulps of water. And there was only a little water left in the bamboo bottle. It showed that the thin bamboo tube couldn’t contain much water.

“Why are you doing this to yourself? You could have bought some hot food in the town and eaten it there. Why are you being so hard on yourself?” Lu Zhen said while tying the bamboo cup back to Ji Ran’s waist.

“Even though we have money now, we still need to be economical, as I plan to build a house somewhere else away from the Lu Family’s residence.” Ji Ran had had this thought long ago, “Although our yard is separate from everyone else’s. We’re still in the same complex. And we have to see each other every day. So fights and bickerings will always be inevitable.”

So far whatever decisions Ji Ran made, Lu Zhen had never commented, but he still said, “Even if you want to build a house, 30 taels will be about enough.” He thought so because he believed that Ji Ran wanted to build ordinary thatched houses.

Ji Ran only smiled and didn’t respond. He wanted to build more than just a few thatched houses. Besides, he had his own plan. Of course, it would only cost them dozens of taels to build some simple houses, but if he were to build houses, he would build only good ones. It would be best if he could build a manor where there were houses, greenhouses, farms, and plantations. And that would cost them a fortune.

The two were leisurely chatting with each other about their future. They didn’t know that some big trouble was waiting for them at home.
