20. Being Falsely Accused

Translator: Annsmiley

As soon as the two entered their yard, Ji Ran felt that something was wrong, but he couldn’t say what it was. It was just his intuition.

Exchanging a glance with Lu Zhen, Ji Ran reached out and pushed open the door of the main room. But he didn’t see anything wrong when he got in, but he still got this strange feeling.

“Let’s go check the hut,” Lu Zhen said.

The hut was where they stored food. The food wasn’t much and they got it by exchanging wild animals with the villagers. But in this house, the few food was the most valuable thing.

The two of them ran straight to the hut. As expected, the food they put there was all gone, so was the firewood, rice, oil, and salt. As for who did it, it was quite obvious.

Ji Ran was so angry that he clenched his jaw and pressed his teeth together. What was wrong with the Lu Family? How could they do something like this? He, Ji Ran, was never a doormat who was resigned to whatever treatment he received. They would be terribly wrong if they expected him to hold back his anger and do nothing about it. And without hesitation, he took out the rolling pin he had just bought from the basket and ran out.

Lu Zhen also looked at the corner of the wall and frowned, his eyes full of ferocity. He did not follow Ji Ran right away. But in the blink of an eye, he disappeared in the spot and when he appeared again, he was walking next to Ji Ran.

Ji Ran rushed angrily into the main yard where Granny Lu and Grandpa Lu lived. His goal was to get the food that belonged to him back. If they refused to give it back to him, he would rather ruin it all than let them have it.

However, when he rushed into the main room of the main yard, Ji Ran was stunned. Everyone in the family gathered in the room and the atmosphere was solemn, and there was also a hunchbacked old man who was stroking his beard sitting on the high seat. From the looks of it, people might think that Ji Ran was at a trial. And the moment Ji Ran entered the door, everyone in the room looked at him in unison. They all pretended to be serious except Leng Xianglian who didn’t disguise the fact that she was gloating.

So… they were fully prepared and were expecting him?

With that in mind, Ji Ran raised his eyebrow and tapped the palm of his hand with the rolling pin casually. He just stood there and looked at everyone.

“Ho, sister-in-law, what is this about? Are you gonna kill our father-in-law and mother-in-law in front of the head of the village?” Leng Xianglian glanced at the rolling pin in Ji Ran’s hand and started to provoke him in a voice dripping with sarcasm.

To Leng Xianglian, it was quite reasonable for her to get angry. Yesterday, Gao Hui got a drumstick from Ji Ran and it was not enough for the children even after she tore it into shreds. She felt that Ji Ran was being unfair to her. He gave a drumstick to Gao Hui and gave nothing to her. He showed no respect for her. He was a man whose husband was dead, which meant that he couldn’t ever have his own kids. So he must be jealous of her as she was the only one who was pregnant in this house. Shame on him!

And because of this, she used the excuse that Ji Ran was not filial as he kept the good stuff to himself instead of sharing it with his parents-in-law, and she incited her parents-in-law to do something about it. That was why Granny Lu told her two sons, Lu Changgeng and Lu Changqing, to take all the food in Ji Ran’s yard to her yard. And she even asked the head of the village here to help her justify what she had done.

Leng Xianglian’s questioning served as the opening of the upcoming heated argument. Granny Lu clapped her thigh, “Gosh, why is this happening to our family? My husband and I are unfortunate enough to have such a lazy and disobedient man as our daughter-in-law. And yet he wants to kill us while the head of the village is present! My dear son! My little Lu Zhen, it’s too bad that you’re dead. If you were still alive, you would see how your wife is treating us. He wants us dead!”

Ji Ran was dumbfounded. The mother-in-law, together with Leng Xianglian, her daughter-in-law, were putting on a great play. How impressive!

“I haven’t said anything yet and you’re accusing me?” Ji Ran complained to himself, but on the surface, he looked cold, “I don’t care what kind of play you are putting on today. I will only say this: put whatever you’ve taken from my yard back where they belong. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being rude!”

“What do you mean? Does those stuff even belong to you?” Granny Lu couldn’t sit anymore. She sprang to her feet. “The day when you were officially married into our family, all that you had was a shabby bag. You didn’t even bring any dowry with you. And now you’re saying that those stuff belong to you?! Luckily, the head of the village is here today. He can be our judge. Ever since you’re married into our family, all you do every day is eating and sleeping. You never go to the fields and do any farm work. And you stole food from us while we are not home. When my husband and I went to ask you about the missing food, you, you beat us! You’re not respectful to your elders. Now you’re here, asking me to give back your stuff? In our family, we eat together and we share everything. Everyone is working hard for the livelihood of the whole family. And you keep the good stuff to yourself. Have you ever done anything for this family and your parents-in-law? You think that you are a man and that you don’t need to do what a daughter-in-law needs to do? The Emperor granted this marriage to my dead son Lu Zhen. If you’re dissatisfied with this marriage, then you’re doubting the Emperor’s decision. Those who disobey the imperial edicts should be sentenced to death! If you accept this marriage, then you’re one part of this family. You’ll use your husband’s surname. And you’ll take care of your husband’s parents for him. It’s what you must do. And no matter where I go, people will agree with me and think that I’m right.”

Ji Ran let Granny Lu say whatever she wanted without interrupting her. When she was finished, he held the rolling pin in his arms and raised his chin. “You’re done?”

Granny Lu didn’t expect Ji Ran to react like that and she was stunned.

And suddenly her husband, Grandpa Lu, put his hands upon his waist and shouted, “Oh, gosh, my waist! It hurts!”

Lu Zhen couldn’t stand it anymore, and he was going to teach these people a lesson, but Ji Ran stopped him with a glance. It was just a small trick. If he couldn’t deal with it, then he wouldn’t call himself a man!

“About what happened yesterday, the door was open and our neighbors saw everything. I believe that they could all be my witnesses as to whether I beat them or not. The head of the village is a wise man. I believe that he must have heard about what happened yesterday. He has his own judgment on it.” Ji Ran nodded calmly towards the head of the village and continued, “When I just came to this place. I’m not familiar with the people here. First, I didn’t take anything from anyone. Second, even if I made meals for myself. is there anything wrong with it? In the yard where I’m living right now, there is no kitchenware and no stove. Anyone who sees it will know that no one ever cooks in that yard. I was hungry and I cooked some food for myself. What’s so wrong about it? Did you have to make such a big fuss over it? I ate your food and you called me thief. Now I make my own living and feed myself. Is there anything wrong with it? I got the food in my hut by exchanging wild animals with the villagers. On what ground should you take them all away? Now you got everyone including the head of the village here as if I’ve committed a crime. Now let me ask, are you doing this to force me to live separately from you? You think you have reason to do this? I think that you are as unreasonable as you could be!”

“Great! You finally admit that you stole the eggs and the flour!” However, Granny Lu was not a reasonable person at all. She thought that she finally had it against Ji Ran, and she turned her head to look at the head of the village, “Sir, did you heard that? We didn’t wrong him. He is a thief indeed!”
