Chapter 17 - Spar

20th May 2009—Queens, 11 Wayland Street.

Within a large open backyard of a house that stood alone on the empty street, crisp cries of a young voice could be heard alongside the sounds of metals clashing with each other.

Under the warm rays of sunlight, the cold light of a sword's blade could be seen flashing as it continuously struck an opposing obsidian-colored spear that seemed to be forged from rare metal ore.

"Hup!"

*Clang! Clang! Clang!*

"Remember what you promised, brother!" cried Jade as she swung her silver longsword.

*Ting!*

As if meeting an immovable object, the silver sword halted on its spot once it made contact with the black spear's gleaming spearhead.

Skye smiled and replied. "I know I know, I'll tell you how I got my powers when you're able to hit me once."

Hearing his words, Jade smirked and jumped back a few meters. Instantly, the surrounding area was as if it had turned into a burning smelting furnace as terrifying heat descended onto the whole backyard.

Focusing his eyes on his sister, Skye nodded in approval when he saw the silver sword engulfed in blazing flames that seemed to contain heat beyond one's imagination.

However, different from the flames that exuded from Jade two weeks ago, the orange-colored flames were now blue, radiating a beautiful and mystical aura around her.

*Crack!*

As she finished gathering momentum, the ground beneath Jade's feet cracked as she leaped towards Skye with amazing speed.

'As expected of the Super Soldier Serum, her strength and speed have reached the ranks of [(Lesser) Superhuman] and [Superhuman] respectively, while her physique reaching [Enhanced].'

Skye welcomed the attack as his right hand clenched the black spear, golden aura covering it.

The contrasts between the shaft's black color, the spearhead's blood-red color, and his Qi that was the color of gold, formed a striking image.

With his minute body control and spear mastery, Skye swept sideways with the spear, clashing against the burning sword.

*Bang!*

"Ugh." After the clash, Jade felt her hands turn numb as she was sent flying from the impact.

Without even letting her catch her breath, Skye stomped the ground and launched himself towards Jade.

In a blink of an eye, Skye appeared above the still-airborne Jade and swung his spear downwards.

One could hear the wind howling as the spear descended onto Jade.

Immediately, Jade held her sword sideways, one hand holding the hilt and the other holding the edge's surface, intending to parry the strike.

Bang!

Overwhelmed by Skye's strength, Jade's little body was blown down the ground, forming a crater.

The next moment...

As the dust and decimated debris flew about, a small figure dashed beyond the smokescreen, heading towards the descending Skye.

Reversing his grip, Skye threw his spear towards the incoming Jade, merciless.

At that moment, Jade only saw a black line flashing towards her with astonishing speed; despite her enhanced body, she knew that she couldn't dodge the spear. However, at that moment, her extreme training for the past few weeks kicked in.

Instinctively, she mustered all her strength and tightened the grip on her burning sword and pierced it forward.

*Clang!*

"Good." praised Skye when he saw his spear sent flying.

"Gotcha." Jade didn't even stop for a second as she immediately jumped towards Skye, swinging her sword downwards.

In response, Skye only smiled and swung a Qi-empowered fist that was also covered in sparks of lightning.

Meanwhile, his other hand extended outwards, as if trying to summon something.

*Boom!*

After the resounding explosion, Jade was forced back a few meters while Skye was forced back a step.

At this time, the black spear that was a few meters away had already flown and returned to Skye's grasp

With one step that shook the ground, Skye appeared beside Jade the next second and struck out with his spear.

*Clang!*

With her enhanced reaction speed, Jade parried the strike, lowered her body, and using her weight and momentum, spun around and slashed towards Skye.

However, as if it was all calculated, a fist welcomed her as soon as she finished her spin.

Unable to dodge or block, Jade was sent a few meters away, landing on the ground helplessly.

"Ah, I give up!" she shouted with her hands up in the air.

Skye laughed as he walked towards her. "This is our 24th match, now the score is 24-0 to me." As he said so, he extended a hand towards Jade.

Taking his hand, she pulled herself up while grumbling. "Brother, how are you so powerful? It's as if you can see and predict my next moves."

Skye only smiled in response and dusted the dirt and debris off of Jade's coat that was similar to his Coat of Midnight. But different from his that was jet-black, the color of Jade's overcoat was a striking, crimson red.

'As expected of a coat that cost 5,000 system points, how durable.' thought Skye

"Go clean yourself up, I'll start cooking now and by the time you're done, the food should be ready."

"Food? Okay" As soon as she heard the words 'cook' and 'food' from her brother, Jade's face immediately brightened up as she dashed back to the house.

Looking at her retreating figure, Skye shook his head and laughed. The next moment, he once more checked the black spear's description and his status page.
