Surviving Apocalypse With Powers Of Fictional Characters

Chapter 20 - I do curse my own abilities

3rd August 2018, 8.22 AM.

The red sky is still the same. Clouds broiling along movements of the wind.

Although the sun could not be seen, it seemed that light still permeated the earth.

The shadows stood still as if the sun is standing in the middle of the afternoon.

Meteorically, it does not make sense as the morning's air felt refreshing. The thermometer even showed a normal morning temperature of 24°C.

After eating breakfast, the team went down to the bas.e.m.e.nt parking of the mansion.

"Every time I come here, it never gets boring." (Zack)

"Wow…seriously Chai, how rich exactly is your family?!" (Melissa)

"We're comfortable." (Chai)

Over 70 machines with price tags over $200 million. In the 7,000 square foot lower ground, you could say that this would be any car enthusiast's wet dream.

"There's not enough space in the Range Rover for all the stuffs. I took out the Hummer, it's one of the best car my dad has." (Chai)

Parked beside the black Range Rover Evoque, a dark navy blue Hummer H2 stood majestic and menacing.

Opening the rear hood, they started transferring half of the load inside the Evoque to the Hummer. That would make the car lighter and faster. Fuel consumption would improve too.

"We'll switch members for this trip. Zack and Joy will be in my team, and Chai'll be with Annie." (Melissa)

Stage Two of Melissa's Plan: Take a trip to the nearest Army Base.

After simulating situations and calculating the success rate, it is still better to get to Putrajaya or Kuala Lumpur by air.

After identifying the nearest airports and air-based military base, it turns out that there is an Air Force base just fifteen kilometers from where they are.

Being a General's daughter, she could pull some strings to send Joy and Annie to Kuala Lumpur. Perhaps even asking some soldiers to escort them to the Australian Embassy.

"Alright team, listen up. The Tentera Udara DiRaja Malaysia (Royal Malaysian Air Force) base would take us about twenty minutes at best. I want everybody to do a final equipment and weapons check, calibrate your earbuds to the team's frequency." (Melissa)

After triple-checking everything, with a nervously beating heart facing the unknown situations in the doomsday, the team headed out of the Chai Family's Mansion.

Approaching the USJ5 Residences' Gate, Zack and Chai cleared out any zombies surrounding the gate area by shooting them with crossbows over the Gate's Watchtower.

There weren't much zombies, most of them were crowding up nearby the helicopter's explosion site in the Municipal Shelter compound area.

Opening up the gates, Joy who drove the Hummer and Annie, who drove the Range Rover moved the cars out of the residence.

Before closing back the gates, Chai took a good look at his neighborhood.

There were so many memories of him here. He silently said his goodbye to his birthplace.

Chai and Zack swiftly returned to the cars, and the team moved out.

"Two kilometers radius is clear." (Zack)

Every kilometer, Zack reports back to Melissa who's sitting in the front passenger seat.

As the Hummer has a sunroof, Zack literally looked out over the SUV's roof like a 'mobile sentry tower'.

With his [Super Senses], the world looks even bigger and more detailed than it used to be.

Passing through the desolate roads, he saw smokes rising up from various locations.

His ears picked up occasional screams in the distant. His nose detected the raw smell of death and corpses from far away.

With the breeze sweeping his face, he kept thinking to himself.

'Would I mentally collapse if I hadn't had this intelligence upgrade from [Kryptonian Physique]?' (Zack)

An average human who lived their lives in the peaceful, modern world would never adapt themselves this fast to this horrible apocalyptic situation.

Even seeing people getting killed would traumatize a normal person, what else if they themselves had to 'kill' a human-like undead creature?

'Sometimes I do curse my own abilities.' (Zack)

Born with an above average IQ, Zack has always been overly praised as the pride of the Black family.

His genius complements both of his parents' status. As his parents are the leading political and academic minds of the nation of Malaysia, nothing less was expected of him.

But often times, his genius would be mistaken as showing off and abuse of power. Most of his peers despised him for his talent and status.

He noticed their jealousy. People who were friendly and close to him talks behind his back.

Suppressing his abilities, he felt that it was the most diplomatic and peaceful solution that he could do.

That inhibition formed his shy, reserved nature. Even his test scores were moderately 'well', just bordering the maximum grade.

His parents were not psychologists, and they never thought that he was fighting a deep inner demon like this.

Up until college, everything changes when he met Chai.

"Hey Zack!!" (Melissa)

He then snapped out his long childhood and teen year's flashback.

"Everything okay? You've been spacing out for a whole minute!" (Melissa)

"Sorry Mel, I was thinking about something. Nothing serious though, don't worry. Okay, everything in one and a half kilometers is cl- hold up! Something's ahead!" (Zack)

Zack squinted his eyes. There was a massive congestion of cars on the four-way intersection ahead.

Joy who was driving the Hummer H2 slowed down to a halt.

{Mel! What's going on in front?} (Chai)

With a curious voice, Chai contacted Melissa.

Zack concentrated and saw hundreds of abandoned car from fifteen meters away. There doesn't seemed to have any noises made by the undead.

"I'll need to get nearer." (Zack)

Melissa replaced Zack as the 'watchtower' and scanned the surroundings with her improved eyesight from her Dexterity stats.

After carefully walking a few meters away from the vehicles, Zack squatted down and then jumped as high as he can!

'Weehoo, this is quite amazing. Eight, nine meters?' (Zack)

While in the air, he threw the multiple stones that he picked up on the roadside to the sea of cars in front of them.

He wanted to see if there are any reactions from within the cars.

If some of them shook after hearing the sound of the pebbles hitting the ground, there might survivors…or zombies.

Thud!

The black, tar-road has two new freshly made craters, courtesy of Zack's landing.

'No pain whatsoever. Man this [HERO System] is super useful.' (Zack)

During his hang time in the air, he did not find any movements in between the massive blockade of cars.

"How's the situation like, Zack?" (Melissa)

Zack explained to her that he did not see any zombies nor survivors.

Although he did notice some cars that had movements when they heard the sound of pebbles hitting the cars and ground.

He also told her that the cars filled up the lanes on the road leading to the Air Force base.

Right next to the roads were two shopping malls.

The newer DaMen Mall and the older Summit Mall.

L.i.c.k.i.n.g his lips, Chai spoke through the radio: {Hey guys, let's kill some in the malls! I bet that there might be hundreds, or even thousands of them.}

***

After assessing their current situation, they decided not to kill the zombies in the malls.

The risk was too big. Unless they could blow up or collapse the mall entirely, killing undead one by one with their current weapons was time-consuming.

They would also risk attracting a zombie horde that could bring them to near-death experience.

They could only put a mental note to clear out the malls if they would ever return.

They theorized that the zombies in the intersection might have migrated to the commercial area, where people were mostly at.

Or again, got attracted by the loud explosion from the helicopter yesterday.

Anyways, it works up to their advantage.

"Both directions are packed. I don't see any ways to pass through." (Zack)

Melissa was silent, thinking about another alternative way.

Looking at the Map in the iPad, she came up with another route.

There was another highway heading towards the base. Albeit a longer one, but just by a kilometer or two.

She laid over the instruction to the team, and they moved out into the residential houses area.

There were no cars around, but there were zombies lurking between the alleyways and came out when they heard the sound of the SUVs.

Chai, Melissa and Zack head-shot every zombie they encounter thanks to their powers.

Crossbows were the perfect stealth weapons that does not aggravate the other undead in the vicinity.

Arriving at the exit to the highway, they found out they the exit has been blocked too!

Zack quickly scouted around the area.

"Mel! It's actually not that bad! If we break the brick wall bordering the residence and the highway, we should be on our way." (Zack)

After reporting to Melissa and confirming there were no zombies in the vicinity, Zack broke down the wall.

With that, the team has left the town of Subang Jaya.
