MIA'S POV:

Opening my eyes never felt terribly difficult. My eyes feel heavy like lead. I feel the familiarity of tiredness, and exhaustion taking over my body. I fainted due to overexerting myself. This hasn't happened for a long time.

No matter how hard I try, waking up is impossible for now.

The least I could do was to seek and overhear the faint voices.

"Please come this way, Mrs Faye. Here's Mia."

"Mm. Let me take a look at her."

I sensed something different.

"Well, no need to worry, Ms Morgan. She is fine. The diagnostic spells show nothing abnormal. It's good even!" So this Mrs Faye cast a magic spell on me.

"Then why did she sleep for two days? Is that okay?"

"Absolutely my dear!"

"I'm not quite sure I follow you Mrs Faye." Mum is confused. Of course she would be.

"Oh, willy me! I have to tell Ms Morgan. You can be rest assured. The baby was just magically exhausted."

"Magically Exhausted? How is that even possible? She barely three months old!"

"It is rare but not impossible. I've indeed seen some babies in the east do magic right after they are born. Again, don't think too much about it."

"Alright. Anything I should be taking care of?"

"Nothing much dear. The little girl is fit as a fiddle. But one thing makes me wonder, Ms Morgan."

"Do tell, please."

"Though accidental magic is nothing bad, we do know its nature."

"It is due highly unstable emotions."

"Precisely so. That's why we require this little lady to stop that. It is not good as she grows. Controlling her magic would be hard for her in the future."

"I will see nothing goes wrong. Thank you Mrs Faye."

"You're always welcome dear, just owl me if you need me for anything. I'll be leaving now."

"Let me see off then."

"Sure."

I mentally heaved a sigh of relief.

But I'm still not okay. Mum neither.

So, two days have passed since dad left. And I know things are never going to be the same ever again. And there's nothing I can do about it. For now.

***

After a long time, well few hours, I'm able to open my eyes.

I observe my surroundings.

I'm still beside my mother who is sleeping.

Everything's the way it was. No change. Except Mum.

I can clearly recognize the changes in her.

The previously cheerful woman has become a tragic beauty. A little paler skin than before. Deep dark circles hung around her eyes.

It made me sad. Really sad.

Oh, looks like she woke up.

"Finally awake dearie? You got momma so worried about you." She said looking at me. She gave a pinch on my cheeks as a punishment.

I could only let her do what she wants. I upset her and no excuses to it.

"Never do it again, baby. I thought I lost you as well." With that, she couldn't hold it any longer. Tears watered out from her eyes. She hugged me and started sobbing. Her every cry dug like a deep cut to me.

She knows it. That it's just us both now.

"It's just you and me now, baby. And I'll never abandon you like him, ever."

I wish what you said is true.

Five years from now, you would die. So don't go around making promises you will be unable to keep, mother.

I wanted to say it out aloud, but all I could do was cry along with her.

I cried myself to sleep again.

***

Days and nights went by. It's been months since I used magic. The data would be complete after two days. When I turn a year old.

I was excited at the idea of finally becoming stronger. Strength, I began to thirst for it overtime.

My mother was excited too. I don't even need to think why. She is just like any other parent. Fussing uselessly over their child's birthday. She just tends to a bit overboard or more.

I let her be. All the void left by him, she is filling it through me.

It stuns me. How she manages to flash pictures every time. She acts like a little girl and me, her doll, the most favourite one.

Dressing me up, feeding me, singing lullabies and taking pictures everyday.

She spoils me rotten. Good thing I'm an a.d.u.l.t in mind lest I'd become another Pansy in the future...merely thinking about it sends shivers down my spine.

I thought that there's no one else who can pamper me more than my mom and dad, but I'm wrong about it. The new guest beats both of them in doing so.

It's my grandma. Maternal. My mum's mum. And boy it's so much fun, watching those two bicker and fight over me.

I genuinely felt like a prin...never mind.

My grandma is also a witch. And she is the coolest old lady I've ever seen. Other than Madame Christmas.

Suddenly I overhear someone arguing. It's them again.

"Really Aurora? It's my granddaughter's first birthday. Naturally she is going to wear pink!"

"Pink? Yuck! My daughter's never wearing it. It's blue!"

"Bloody hell! Every girl wears pink on their birthdays."

"She can wear it when grows up, but not now. It's final."

"You-"

They are deciding the colour of my clothes. Mom, I love you so much.

My birthday was over. I had the first lick of sweets for the first time in this life. I almost cried because of it. There wasn't much celebration. Just my mum, grandma, Mrs Faye and few others.

I got some fancy gifts and blessings. Everything would be absolutely satisfactory if my cheeks weren't abused.

The guests pretended my father didn't exist. I was gratified for that. Though mum never shed a tear in front of me, I know what she is really feeling.

The party and the a.d.u.l.t's afterparty are done. I watched in envy as they enjoyed their wine. I can only bid my time…

All the fuss was over. I'm in my pyjamas, ready to sleep but I couldn't. The two ladies, both very similar in appearance look at me. They were a bit solemn. I raise a brow to that.

"Look, even Mia thinks its not right, Aurora." My grandma said she was somehow vexed.

"She's just surprised. Nothing more."

"Sigh… What are you going to say to her when asks you about it in the future?"

"The truth, mum."

"Is it really worth it? Giving her this thing, it's like announcing the whole world that she's 'his' daughter."

"She is his daughter."

"Think about the troubles which will follow you both."

"Mother, please. This is the last thing he asked me."

Grandma left the room angrily, clearly unsatisfied with mum's decision.

I'm intrigued. Grandma supported us a lot. The lady wasn't one bit bothered by me being a bastard. I mean, I'm in the 1980s now. At this time, few things do matter a lot. Like reputation. But she didn't give a damn about it. She just loved me as I love her, if not more.

So this is new.

Mum gently placed me on her l.a.p. She looked at me and took my hand. She put a ring on my right hand. It shrunk to my size. I look at it intently. It's definitely one of the most exquisite rings I've seen in all my 'lives'.

I bring the ring closer to me. It possesses magic in it, no doubt. Pretty strong one too.

I glance at mum.

The smile on her face was nostalgic.

"This belonged to your father, love. He d.e.s.i.r.ed you to have it."

It's the first time she mentioned him since then.

"Mum?"

"Nothing, love. Come on now, let's set you to sleep."

After a lullaby and some 'sleeping', the lights are gone and mum lay beside like usual.

I trace the ring on my hand.

Sigh...This is so complicated.
