Tales Of Good And Evil

Chapter 4 - A License To Work!

As Richard walked in the direction of the north which according to the middle-aged man was the direction in which the closest town lied, he first opened his character window and allocated his five attribute points and one affinity point which he got from levelling up from to . He put three attribute points into strength, one into dexterity and one into vitality. As for the affinity point, he put it into physical affinity which increased his damage dealt with physical attacks by 1% and reduced his damage taken from physical attacks by also 1%.

Along his path, Richard saw many slimes. Some were in the grass, some were near the trees and some were on the rocks. But even though he saw them, he didn't bother himself with any one of them and just continued forward.

Once the town gates appeared before him in the distance, Richard hastened his step and walked up to them. By these gates stood two men. The one standing on the left side of the gates was of around forty-years-old and the one standing on the right side of the gates was around of nineteen-years-old. He walked up to the younger guard standing on the right side of the gates and said, "Can I ask you a few questions?"

The young guard looked at Richard and frowned. "I am on duty," he said.

"I just want to ask you a few questions," Richard said. "I won't take too long."

"I am on duty and I don't have time to answer your questions," the young guard said. "Go bother someone else. Or would you rather get arrested?"

The middle-aged guard standing on the other side of the gates coughed, making both Richard and the young guard look over at him.

"I can answer the questions that you might have, traveller," the middle-aged guard said.

"Normally, it's the younger ones that want a distraction and not the older ones," Richard thought. Then, he walked over to the middle-aged guard.

"We are on duty," the young guard said as he glared at the middle-aged guard. "We don't have time to talk to people."

The middle-aged guard looked at the young guard. "Don't be like that. I am just going to answer a few questions of this traveller. Nothing more."

"I will report this," the young guard said.

The middle-aged guard shrugged his shoulders. "That's fine with me."

The young guard harrumphed and looked away from the middle-aged guard.

The middle-aged guard looked at Richard. "So what questions do you have for me, traveller?"

"Do you know who is Cain?"

The middle-aged guard shook his head. "I don't know anyone who goes by that name."

"You know no one with that name? Are you sure?"

The middle-aged guard nodded his head. "Yeah. I don't know anyone that goes by the name Cain."

"This middle-aged man doesn't know about Cain as well," Richard thought and said, "I see. I have one more question."

"Please go ahead."

"Did anyone enter this town at around midnight?"

"We close the gates when the sun sets. So no one could have entered at midnight."

"Thank you for answering my questions."

The middle-aged guard shook his head. "No problem, traveller."

"I will be going inside now."

"Please go ahead," the middle-aged guard said and Richard walked into the town.

"I hope that someone in this town knows about Cain," Richard thought. Then, he walked all over the town, asking every single person that he saw on the streets and found in the buildings about Cain, but not one of them knew who Cain was.

"I should get a two-handed sword and leave this town," Richard thought. Then, he walked into the blacksmith's shop and approached the counter behind which sat an old man as he said, "Hello again."

"Have anything more you have to ask?" the old man said.

"Yes," Richard said. "But this time it's about the prices of your weapons. How much is your cheapest two-handed sword?"

"Fifty copper coins."

Richard nodded his head in understanding. "Are you perhaps hiring?"

"I am not. But if you want, I can hire you. If you want to sit behind the counter and sell my wares, show me your merchant's license, and if you want to forge armour and weapons, show me your blacksmith's license."

"I have to have a license to work behind the counter?" Richard thought and said, "And if I don't have either one of those two licenses?"

"Then, you can't do either of those two jobs," the blacksmith said as he shook his head.

"Do you need a license for all jobs?"

The blacksmith looked at Richard and frowned. "Have you been living under a rock for your entire life? Of course, you have to have a license for the job that you want to do."

Richard dryly laughed. "Which license is the easiest to obtain?"

The blacksmith sighed. "I don't know which one is the easiest to obtain, but I can tell you that the merchant's license is easier to obtain than the blacksmith's license," he said. "But out of all the licenses, it's the most expensive one."

"Can any of the licenses be obtained without spending any money."

"There is one. However, it's not a license but a diploma and it's harder to get than any license. To get the blacksmith's license or any other license, you just have to go to the university which is located in the capital city. But to get the hero's diploma, you have to go through countless life-threatening trials."

"A hero, huh?" Richard thought and said. "Where would I need to go to get this diploma?"

The blacksmith looked into Richard's for half of a minute before saying, "The capital. But you have to leave the town today as I believe that the admissions into the academy will be ending soon."

"One last thing."

"What is it?"

"Where is the capital?"

"You really have been living under a rock for your entire life. Alright, listen."
