The Alpha's Prisoner

Chapter 17 - 17: Honesty

Her heart started to beat fast again, making Violet want to throw up. She wasn’t ready to face him yet.

Hearing him say horrible things to her face wasn’t something she was prepared for.

She would rather he just killed her instead.

Violet opened the door with her trembling hands, and Jack stormed inside.

After closing it, she turned to face him, but couldn’t look up.. She couldn’t stare into his eyes.

“I don’t even know where to begin.” his voice sounded angry, but at the same time sad. Violet couldn’t figure out why.

Maybe he was upset that she hurt someone he cared about.

Didn’t that Kate said something about him being hers?

That was also part of the reason why Violet wanted to punch her so badly.

“Violet, look at me!” he yelled, scaring Violet.

She raised her head, preparing herself for the way he was going to look at her. She couldn’t stand those beautiful eyes staring at her with contempt.

But that didn’t happen. He was looking at her like he was in pain. Violet almost frowned.

“What happened?” he asked, taking two steps forward, like he wanted to reach out to her.

But he seemed to realize it and stopped suddenly.

He had to behave as the leader, he had to punish her for what she had done.

“I don’t know what to say. I… I didn’t think it was possible for me to shift, I… don’t know why that happened.” she started to explain, but she was just as confused as him.

“Yeah, well, I didn’t think that was possible either, but apparently it is. The doctor said you’re probably too strong and the dosage was getting weak for you.” he said, and Violet thought it was quite plausible indeed.

Arden and the members from the Diamond Pack always said she was really powerful. That was one of the reasons why they wanted to train and help her control her wolf side.

She could easily kill someone without meaning to.

It felt like Violet was a time bomb.

“Jack, I’m really sorry. I… She got mad because I bumped into her, but I tried to apologize. And then she started to say those things, warning me to stay away from you… I…”

“To stay away from me?” he frowned. “What do you mean?”

Didn’t he know?

“She said that I should stay away from you because you are hers, that she didn’t care that I’m your mate…” Violet tried to recall as much as possible from the conversation with Kate.

If that was even a conversation at all.

Jack laughed with disdain.

“Yeah, right! I forgot how Kate can be delusional about this. That is obviously not true. You don’t need to be scared of her because of that. I never had anything to do with her, and never will. She just likes to feed her dreams.”

“Yeah, well, maybe you should. And I’m not scared of her.” Violet commented annoyed and jealous.

Was that what he took from the fight?

“I was just protecting myself.” she continued.

“I know. Lucinda already came to talk to me.”

He started to walk around again, thinking about what to say next.

Violet stood there, paralyzed, without knowing what to do.

She suddenly felt the need to be hugged, comforted by him.

But that was clearly out of the table.

“You really confuses me. It’s annoying.” Jack murmured, more to himself than to her.

“I confuse you? How so?” Violet asked.

Jack stopped to look at her, and he was even closer than before.

That made Violet uncomfortable. It only made stronger her wish to be on his arms.

Jack didn’t seem to be having a great time as well.

“It physically hurts to be this close to you and not be able to touch you, to be with you.”

Violet gulped. She knew exactly what he meant.

“But at the same time, it annoys me even more the fact that you want to kill me and I don’t even know why.”

Violet felt really guilty about that. She couldn’t imagine being on his shoes.

He looked nothing like the man she heard about before leaving the palace. He was kind to his members, concerned about their problems and really pleasant to be around.

“People from my pack believes that you’re really bad. That you steal from the poor and take advantage of them, and that you also want to rule the world.” Violet decided to open up a little with him.

Jack was taken by surprise.

It looked like it was the first time he heard that in his entire life and it had nothing to do with him.

“Really?” he smiled softly. “That’s funny. That’s exactly how we know your leader is. I have nothing against your pack. I just don’t like who leads it.”

Violet widened her eyes.

“He is my father. Not the biological one, I was adopted.” she added after seeing Jack’s shocked face.

“Arden is your father?”

“He is. Do you know him?” Violet was curious.

“I do. I fought him once, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to kill him. I’m sorry, but that’s the truth.” Jack added.

“Why did you want to kill him?” she asked with a hoarse voice.

“Probably not for the same reason he wants to kill me. I know you have no reason to believe me, but I’m the good guy here, Violet.”

And deep down, Violet could feel that she believed in his statement.

“I'm just trying to free the Crescent from the hands of a tyrant. I know he is not the only one. There are a lot of tyrannical alphas out there, but the Diamond Pack is the main and bigger one.”

Violet was astonished. It was really hard to listen to the other side of the story.

“Why would you think he is a tyrant? He does everything to our people. He’s very generous.” she said astounded.

“He does that because he needs someone to support him. He already have the power, but without people’s support, he’s just a nobody. His motives are wrong. He does what he needs to do, for his own purposes. He doesn’t care if the wolves outside are starving or dying from a plague. Or if we need help. He just wants to rule from inside those walls, without seeing the real world.”

That made a lot of sense.

“Arden did a lot of bad things, Violet. I hope one day I can prove it to you so you’ll believe me.” Jack said a little upset.

They stayed silent for a few minutes as Violet processed everything she heard.

“What I said is true. I’m not a killer.” Violet said after pondering for a while. “I was assigned for this mission against my will.”

Jack stared into her eyes and that baffled her. She had to look away to continue the story.

“We always heard that you’re a bad person, so I used that to convince myself to do it, since I didn’t really have a choice.”

“I get that.” he nodded.

“I know you have no reason to forgive or believe me. But I really didn’t mean to hurt Kate. I…”

Violet was about to tell him about her uncontrollable wolf, but she stopped herself.

She couldn’t willingly give him such an useful information. Anyone could use it against her, although she didn’t know how.

In her heart, she felt that Jack would never do such thing, but she couldn’t risk it.

“You…?” Jack raised his brows at her, waiting for the rest of the sentence.

“I will understand if you want to punish me.”

Jack walked to where she was standing and stopped in front of her, making Violet’s blood run through her veins in a rush.

“I can’t say I won’t punish you, but the idea I had in mind for that is not very suitable for this moment.”

Violet didn’t understand what he meant, but from the look on his face, he was being ambiguous.

Ambiguous and naughty.

“I’ll have to increase the dosage of the drug. I still can’t trust you to let you walk around my mansion hurting my fellow members.”

Violet nodded.

“I understand that.”

“Don't worry. I’ll make sure that this won’t have any side effects on you. I wouldn’t hurt you in any way.”

Jack’s eyes diverted to Violet’s lips, which made her lower belly contract with desire.

He couldn’t be so close to her and still do those type of things. It should be illegal.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” he said abruptly and left the room, making Violet confused and frustrated.

How much longer was she going to endure that?
