The Basketball Court Swordsman

Chapter 18 - : After a coaching addiction

Temporary assistant coach, this is Bird’s new title assigned to Henson. In the second game of the summer league, Henson really appeared in the team’s dressing room. This is the first time Henson has had such close contact with the players in the past few months of working with the team!

Dennis Posey was obviously not happy, he didn’t know why Bird had put this clown into the coaching staff, even if it was just a temporary assistant coach. Posey was not happy not only because he did not like Henson, but also because he felt his position was threatened. Although he and Vogel are both O’Brien’s confidants, as long as Bird speaks, O’Brien may get out, let alone him.

Henson entered the coaching staff and gave Posey the feeling of sand in the locker room.

The dressing room of the summer league is not luxurious, and the atmosphere is not lively. After all, these players not only have to compete with each other, but also with each other. Getting the last few places in the NBA in the summer league is the biggest goal of this group of guys. So in the summer league, the coach’s job is not important, most of the time it is to let these players show themselves. Because of this, the assistant coaches who lead the team in the summer league are usually the team’s assistant coach, so Vogel has gotten through the addiction of being a head coach. And Henson, along the way, touched the position of assistant coach.

Of course, Henson’s position is not stable, Bird has not signed a new contract with him, which means that he is essentially a scout. As Bird said, he just let Henson “experience” the feeling of being a coach. There is no doubt that Bird wants to see if Henson has the potential to be a coach. This guy may be smart, but to be a coach, smart is not enough.

“You are crazy, are you? O’Brien has called me three or four calls today, and you actually inserted that scout into the coaching staff?” Pritchard has no prejudice against Henson now, but Let him be stationed in the coaching staff, still a little uneasy.

“What’s the matter? I just asked him to sit on the bench. Besides…” In the face of his assistant’s doubts, Byrd just kept smiling, “Don’t you want to look at it, that is full of tricks? Can you show me anything?”

“That guy has shown his unparalleled talent in basketball skills and tactics more than once. You know, there are geniuses in the players and geniuses in the coaches. The guy Henson can deduce some simple tactics only in his head. I dare say that Dennis Posey, who has been an assistant coach for 12 years, has no such ability. Coupled with his accurate judgment of the player’s ability, it can help him not make mistakes when using people. As for tactics, I believe As long as he is willing to learn, he can learn faster than anyone else.” Bird explained the reason to his assistant. He didn’t think of what he thought of, and Bird had his own reasons for making these decisions.

“But Jim will be unhappy in this way. What I worry about is the harmony of the team.” Pritchard spread his hands. Managing a team is not as simple as playing a simulation game. After all, computers cannot simulate interpersonal relationships.

“Jim? He had better not have any opinions. I will give him one more season at most. If we still play outside the playoffs next season, I shouldn’t be happy!” After Bird finished speaking, Pritchard De seemed to want to refute, but Bird stretched out a finger and asked his assistant to stop.

It’s the offseason. Let Henson handle the affairs of the summer league…

When he was in the locker room, Henson said little. Frank Vogel is the boss here, and Henson doesn’t want to be prestigious when he comes up. Besides, Vogel has always treated Henson well, at least the only person in the coaching staff who doesn’t give him a look. He has always regarded Vogel as a friend, so it is even more impossible to fight against Vogel.

Henson just silently watched how Vogel did, how to lay out tactics, and how to talk to the players. After all this was over, he followed the team to the court, and for the first time started a basketball game as a coach!

Although the arena of the summer league can only accommodate more than one thousand people, it is not at the same level as the real NBA game arena. But hearing the shouts from behind him, Henson still got goose bumps.

Before watching the ball, Henson was just a bystander. Although he is a scout, he analyzes a player from the perspective of an observer. But today, he changed his mind and became a participant in the competition!

“How do you feel? Is it completely different from sitting in the stands?” After the players came on the field, Frank Vogel sat back on the bench and smiled friendly at Henson.

“Yes, I feel like I’m surrounded by everyone’s enthusiasm. And it’s too noisy, it seems difficult to concentrate.” Henson sat next to Vogel, still a little uncomfortable with the perspective of the bench. Percy didn’t fight in anger, and the boy was now closer to Vogel.

“It’s good to get used to it. Sitting on the bench in the NBA is not easy at all. This is a test of your concentration, patience, oh, yes, and ass.”

“It turns out that you always like to go to and fro on the sidelines to relax your ass?” Henson’s joke made Vogel relaxed a lot. He didn’t understand that Henson was a very easy person to get close to, but why Jim and Dennis just don’t like him.

After the game started, Henson had nothing to say as a rookie. After all, this is not a novel, and not everyone can immediately let out a bit of fart for the first time in this position. Although Henson can clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of each player with the help of the data analysis module, and can see many numbers that ordinary people can’t see. But this is only auxiliary help after all, this thing will not make him a coach overnight, Henson must use his smart mind to learn slowly.

Most of the time in the game, Henson just sat there, holding a notebook pretending to write, write and draw, with an awe-inspiring face of an assistant coach.

Until the third quarter of the game, the Boston Celtics only trailed the Pacers by 3 points. Although the Pacers lead, but such a small advantage is not as good as Vogel expected.

After all, as a championship-level team, the Celtics used only a 58th pick in this year’s draft to select Leicester Hudson, a strong guard. In addition, the other players who make up the summer league team are all undrafted. It stands to reason that the Celtics’ configuration is not as good as the Pacers, but Vogel has been unable to open the score.

I have to admit that Vogel is an excellent defensive expert, and he believes in using defense to win the game. But his weakness in the offensive layout, even Henson, a layman, can see.

“Run…cough cough cough cough… watch back…” Vogel shouted from the sidelines, but no one could hear him. Because from the beginning of the summer league training camp to the present, Vogel has been yelling almost every day. At this time, his throat was completely hoarse, and he couldn’t speak loudly at all.

Vogel shook his head, winked at his old partner Percy, and motioned for him to speak for himself.

Posey stood on the sidelines tremblingly. Although he had been an assistant coach for more than a decade, Posey had never done a job like propaganda next to O’Brien. After all, it is not high school kids who are running on the court, but professional players who may become millionaires! Want to shout at them? No one has this kind of courage.

“Um… everyone run and actively defend themselves.” Percy stopped after shouting just this, and then looked at Vogel pitifully. This guy is not a head coach at all. His shout is not as good as Vogel’s hoarse voice. He can’t be heard in an arena with just over a thousand people, let alone in an NBA official arena.

Vogel looked at Posey speechlessly. He had never felt so embarrassed by the air for so many years as a coach. Then he turned his gaze to Henson, who was writing and painting with a notebook. He suddenly felt extremely grateful that if Bird hadn’t sent Henson today, Vogel would have only bite the bullet and shouted his throat.

“Joe, tell them, actively return to defense and run, their enthusiasm is not enough!”

Hearing Vogel’s shout, Henson froze for a second, then quickly stood up and walked to the sidelines. After calling Henson, Vogel’s throat was completely overwhelmed.

At this time, Holiday’s emergency stop jumper just hit the frame, the Celtics scored the rebound, and Hudson had already started running towards the frontcourt. For this kind of rookie at the end of the second round, their work is not completely stable, so they must play harder to ensure that they stay on the team.

I have to admit that the Celtics’ advantage in enthusiasm today is indeed unmatched by the Pacers.

Posey looked at Henson with disdain. How could that crappy scout do things that he couldn’t do?

The next second, Henson blew a whistle, loud enough that the people in the last row of the stands could hear it.

“Run, guys! Run! Go back to defense, don’t give them a chance to score easily!”

The players finally heard the shouts of coaches on the sidelines. For young players, they actually need the coach’s guidance. It’s just that Vogel has been unable to convey his guidance to the players for a long time.

After hearing the coach’s shouts, the players seemed to have given a shot, and they were relieved instantly, at least they no longer panic. The Pacers’ defense suddenly stabilized, making the Celtics unable to adapt for a while.

In the end, Hudson’s shot knocked out under the interference of Holiday. After all, the two are not players of the same level. As long as Holiday is calm, defending against Hudson is not a problem at all.

“Well, hold on, hold on, and fight slowly, it is them who should be anxious!”

Henson continued to shout, and Holiday also made a downward pressure on the court to signal everyone to stabilize the rhythm.

Vogel looked at Henson in surprise. He didn’t give Henson the words just now, but Henson yelled it out of his own accord.

With a steady rhythm, Holiday no longer rushed to make a shot, but calmly divided the ball to Danny Green after breaking through the screen. The latter fired a long-range open shot and the basketball passed through the net. It seems that Green has adapted to the NBA’s three-point line very quickly. The point difference instantly turned into 6 points, and Holledi looked to the sidelines and gave Henson a soft nod.

“That’s it, good job kid!” Henson clapped vigorously from the sidelines, and he could see that Holledi was smiling.

For a moment, Vogel felt like he had become an assistant coach again. And Henson, he is like a real head coach, giving orders from the sidelines!
