The Chronicles Of Rhaxtyx

Chapter 58 - Pursuit

Miriam, without anything else to do, was touring the city; learning what was where and who was who. Her touring was not unfruitful. She found some really useful shops near Crystal Cove, where they were staying. A weapons shop, a general supplies shop if they ever needed basic things and clothes store for adventurer. The board of the clothes shop especially had 'for adventurers' written on it because the clothes sold in this shop was focused more on practicality and usability on adventures.

Seeing as these places seemed decent, she decided to enter and check it out. She started with the clothing shop. Inside was different styles of clothes hanged everywhere. The whole shop was designed internally as a giant wardrobe.

Clothes hanging from the ceiling, various adventuring gear hanging from the walls. It was like a labyrinth. Miriam was overwhelmed by this when she entered and stiffened. While she was looking around, she heard a woman speak from within the clothes. Or was it from the other side of them?

"Hello and welcome to 'The Highest Peak'. Gear for adventurers by adventurers. How may I help you?"

"Umm… Hello?" (Miriam)

"Yes, I'm here."

While the voice said that a woman with a strong build came out of the clothes in front of Miriam. She had short ginger hair and had gloves on. She was wearing a tank top with her stomach revealed and her cargo pants were fixed to her waist by a tool belt containing leather working tools. She smiled sweetly and looked at Miriam.

"Welcome!"

"Hello. I, just wanted to check if-"

"If you can buy it from here if you need it? Surely! We have most things adventurers need when they are out there."

The shop keeper then started walking towards Miriam's right side, carving a path between clothes and various other utensils.

"This here is our tool section. You can find almost anything you can find in a general store. Maybe more! Beware though, we also deal with second hand goods too so you might find used or damaged goods. In that case our establishment is nor responsible."

She then continued carving a path while dragging Miriam with her. Miriam was baffled by the shop keeper's behavior and couldn't resist at all. They looked like friends on a shopping spree. The main shopper was the shop keeper and the f.o.r.c.i.b.l.y dragged friend was Miriam.

After being dragged along for half an hour, Miriam was finally able to resist the shop keeper and stop being dragged. She had an apologetic expression while talked.

"I'm sorry, I will return with my friends. I can't really buy everything by myself, I need their opinions as well."

"Oh it's okay. You can come anytime."

After nodding, Miriam turned around. She was expecting to walk straight to the exit but when she looked, she was lost inside the shop. She looked around for a while with a helpless expression but couldn't find her way. She then slowly turned her towards the shop keeper. Her face was dead serious but her eyes radiated her helplessness. When the shop keeper saw this, she chuckled and pointed towards her right side.

"The exit's that way. I'm surprised you asked for it. No one usually does out of pride."

"Thank you."

She then calmly walked between the various wares of the shop towards the exit. When she exited, she smiled because of the sun hanging above.

"I prefer being stuck in a cave system for a week than that."

She thought out loud. She then started walking deeper into the city, heading towards more centralized places. She passed by a big market of various food stuffs from across the continent. There were also spices, some she hasn't even heard of. She looked at them marvelously.

'Capitals are different indeed.'

She thought. She went to the capital of Niksia before where she was trained, Quzhouide. But it couldn't even come close to this place when it came to variety of goods and liveliness. When she was going through the market, she felt something was off and looked around to find nothing in particular. There were just a lot of people shopping and walking around.

Without mind it too much, she kept on walking. While she was at a plaza, she looked around to some of the shops. A weapon shop in particular caught her eye and she headed there. From the outside, this shop seemed like it was dealing with high ranking blacksmiths as the weapons showcased at the store front were really sharp and looked of high quality. The true eye-candy for her was inside though.

In every woman, there's an excited feeling that is only appeared when they are shopping certain things. Most women get this excited feeling when they are shopping for high quality clothes or even wedding dresses. For Miriam, it was high quality weapons. As soon as she entered the shop and saw the arms for sale, her heart skipped a beat and her cheeks reddened with excitement. In her eyes was the true love towards shopping.

'I now understand why women like to go out shopping!'

She quickly dashed towards a weapon rack that contained various short sword designs. Normal swords, hooked swords, serrated swords. Even a sword with a mechanism to elongate! She then dashed to the other side of the shop, where daggers were showcased in displaying cases or small racks.

She noticed everything that is sold in this shop in a split second and she started dashing around the shop to see every single one of them. What she didn't notice was the shop keeper smiling wryly after calling for her for about fifteen minutes without any response from her.

Miriam was able to calm down after walking around in awe for half an hour. When she calmed down, she felt a gaze land on her and when she looked, she met with a burly man with a big grin on his face behind the counter. Her cheeks instantly became red because of embarrassment and she quickly nodded lightly.

"I'm relieved that you like my wares, miss. Anything that caught your eye specifically?"

"They are all beautiful. Do you mind if I try some of them?"

"Sure, we have a back yard where you can test the various weapons on the shelves. We have some samples for testing so you can just come. This way."

The shop keeper opened the counter door and headed towards the corridor that lead to the back side of the shop. There was a workshop at the back and there was also someone working on some weapons it seemed like as there were hammering sounds.

The corridor lead to a back yard like the shop keeper told and then in the yard there were targets for archery, dummies for swords and planks for throwing weapons. There were also samples of the weapons in the shop. There were there shelves and all the weapons that were being showcased were also on those shelves.

Miriam picked up a random short sword and swung it for a bit to get used to its weight. After a few swings, she went towards a dummy and started chopping at it. Her form was the same as when she was fighting a real enemy and her movements were swift. The shop keeper was impressed by this.

After testing the weapon for a while, she returned the sword to the shelf and tried a couple more weapons. After testing weapons for an hour, she turned to the shop keeper. The shop keeper had a smile on his face and spoke with a complimentary tone.

"You are good, miss! You are one of the few professional adventurers my establishment has the honor of serving."

"Thank you. I don't plan on buying right now but I will definitely come back! I have a few things I will make my friends buy at all costs."

Her eyes were burning with determination. Her clenched fist has turned white and this made the shop owner smile wryly.

"Okay then! I will await you next visit with bated breath."

He then led the way to the inside once again. As Miriam was about to enter, she felt bloodl.u.s.t. She quickly drew her short sword and swung it to deflect two throwing daggers. The daggers fell to the ground and Miriam was able to see them clearly. The design was one she knew, very well in fact. These daggers were made in the Dynasties and only a select group of individuals can have the right to use these.

Miriam quickly entered the shop and closed the door behind her. As soon as she shut the door, two thunks sounded out and two daggers pierced the door. The shop keeper was alarmed by this as well and turned around to look at Miriam holding her short sword and shutting the door.

*Thunk thunk*

"Miss what are you-"

"No time to talk. Hide with your friend in the workshop."

"What is going on!?"

"Nothing that concerns you don't worry. Just hide!"

*Thunk*

After one more dagger Miriam dashed for the front of the and exited the building after sheathing her sword. She ran around the plaza, towards the opposite side of where she came from. The people that was in front of her made way with surprised faces.

But Miriam couldn't care less about them. Her eyes were searching for her attacker. Without much delay, another round of attacks came her way. She dodged the daggers and went inside a side alley. When the daggers hit the ground there were people that screamed put and soon there was a panicking crowd of civilians.

After entering the alley, Miriam mumbled to herself and jumped towards a window. She quickly ascended towards it and held onto a windowsill on the second floor of a house. She then pulled herself with force and kicked the sill to jump onto the roof. Her landing was smooth and there weren't any wasted movements.

Once she was up there, she gazed around one more time to see no one attacking her. She knew she was going to be attacked once more though so she started running to the next rooftop. She was jumping from a rooftop to another one and in the meantime, she was dodging incoming throwing daggers or blocking them.

The city guards were alerted and they were quick to respond. There wasn't any evidence on the street, no daggers or anything but some people were saying something about a woman running on the rooftops and swinging a sword.

Once they got a hold of this information, they ran towards where the civilians pointed at. Soon enough they saw Miriam swinging her short sword at random intervals and there were also some sparks whenever she swung it.

"Hey! You there! Stop in the name of the King!"

'Dammit!'

She descended from the roof with a swift jump and ran towards another street from the alley. She had a bad feeling about her situation but she couldn't really name it. Just as she was about to think up a new strategy, she felt a mana fluctuation. It was an obvious one and even she who was really bad at feeling it could feel it with ease. This time, the attacker didn't intend to hide their presence anymore.

When she looked behind her, she could see a {Fireball} flying at her. Her eyes opened wide and immediately muttered under her breath a spell while bracing herself. She was intending of using the explosion to gain more momentum.

*BOOM!*

It was a loud boom. It was probably heard from all of the eastern area of the capital city. With the help of the explosion, Miriam landed on a rooftop with everything intact. She then ran towards a random direction and made her way away from the explosion, just to be safe from the guards and thus from unnecessary trouble.
