The Liberal Assassin

Chapter 31 - Man Down

"I've gone down half the list and still no clues as to the mastermind behind the experiment."

Rush hummed and Ignacio frowned. Things were beginning to look a little gloomy with the progress. Khronos refused to attend our meeting because he was too busy trying to figure out the motive of the experiments. Something about the experiment's data didn't add up.

Nash chose to ignore us while reading the latest news about Colette Shifer and Melvick Thrusher's deaths.

"Nothing about their cause of deaths were mentioned."

Of course, the news wouldn't release anything. They couldn't. How were they going to tell the public that the Night Walker brutally maimed their limbs and removed their body parts in bits and pieces?

"Oh share with us the details! What did you do?" Rush practically destroyed the definition of

personal space when he slung an arm around my shoulder.

I sighed when even Nash gave me that look that promised I wasn't going anywhere till they heard what they wanted.

"Colette was first. I merely shattered her bones section by section starting with fingers after I blindfolded her. She would say anything that came to mind or remained mute. It seemed like she didn't know anything about the experiment so I ended her suffering quickly with a quick snap of the neck. Melvick's was a little more brutal. He refused to utter a single word and died from blood loss at the end after a grand total of five hundred and thirty-nine slashes with all his fingers and toes removed."

Ignacio turned a shade of green and Rush ashen. Only Nash seemed unfazed at the gory details.

"You didn't get any leads huh?"

I shook my head and sighed. Surely one of the fixed seats knew about it. The mastermind should be one of them. With three down only two more to go, it was either Rion Wrightly – the overly confident head of Luna Security or Arvin Vogel – the politician since the Inner City's founding.

Then again there was always Lilith Malfoy whom Raoul had disclosed. However, Lilith must be a small fry for the project. I don't want to cut away my only link to finding what I needed just yet. I'll watch Lilith for a while.

"Well, no matter. After I've gone through the remaining fixed seats we will have an answer."

"Don't take too long brat."

I nodded. "I'll be done by the end of the week then I'll check with Khronos on his progress."

***

It was easier said than done.

This wasn't how it was meant to turn out. They shouldn't have been able to anticipate my arrival unless they were waiting the whole time. If I thought Spencer was paranoid, Rion must be schizophrenic!

If it weren't for the Night Walker's suit and all the gadgets, I would never have been able to survive five homing lasers and all those plasma guns. Who knew that Luna Security had gravity grenades and if it weren't for my force field technology, I wouldn't have escaped.

It didn't matter if there was a huge gash on my right upper t.h.i.g.h or that I could no longer feel my left arm, I was alive. If the incident with Rion was bad, I think the news about Arvin was worse. That old coot has gone into hiding and no one knows his whereabouts.

With the last of my strength, I pushed the button on my charged orb.

The charged orb brought me to a familiar run-down abode as I felt the last of my consciousness leave me. Before falling into the darkness, I apologised to the team for compromising the mission.
