The Little Calamity

Chapter 16 - Genius

He walked toward the pill, causing Arisa to become fl.u.s.tered.

" Rayne, wait. You shouldn't touch anything."

She tried to stop him but the woman signaled her that it was fine. Rayne was a little too absorbed to hear Arisa's warning as he arrived at the table.

" This is a medicine used to fight against inner demons..."

He looked at the different failures, some where piles of powders, some were weird looking goo and two were in form of badly made pills, it was clear that none of them were a success. Arisa's teacher stood up and walked toward Rayne, it was as if she calculated the timing of each of her step which made a weird rhythm that was strangely hypnotic.

" You can tell without testing the pills or knowing the ingredient?"

Rayne didn't stop analyzing what he was seeing and only nodded.

" Although the alchemist skill is good he is lacking in strength and since the pill's recipe was wrong from the start he couldn't make it work through strength like most probably did. He tried substituting some of the difficult ingredient to weaker variant but it was too focused toward light type plants."

It was the first time Rayne talked this much by himself, surprising Arisa. The woman also seemed shocked, she could obliviously feel that Rayne had no cultivation yet he could guess this much just by looking at her failure.

" I don't know the ingredients used but the main one should be a plant used in healing people so it was probably mistook as a good plant but it's actually poisonous in nature even if it can't harm human. The light element conflict against it so it's probably better to try a few dark ingredient instead.

The dark ki will absorb the demon and all you need is to expel the medicinal energy after. It might be a little complicated to use but it should be much more effective and the pill should be easier to make too."

Just as they guessed he had no knowledge about alchemy but his eyes could see the energy of the pills, just like when he saw the magic circle he immediately knew what was wrong with it and he instinctively tried to solve it. Arisa looked at the two and started sweating bullets.

If he angered her even she wouldn't be able to protect him.

" Are you sure about this? Wouldn't the dark ki power up the inner demons?"

Rayne finally stopped looking at the table after solving the problem. He stared at the woman with a blank face, causing her heart to skip a beat.

" Dark energy might seem evil but it simply do what it's told. The main ingredient of this medicine might be a poison but it's main purpose is killing inner demons, this was probably the only thing that the creator or this recipe got right. Ah, excuse me, I am Rayne, Arisa's new student."

He saw that Arisa seemed extremely nervous and immediately remembered that he never introduced himself. He offered her his hand as a greeting, just like he was told to do.

" I am Serah, it's a p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e to meet you handsome."

She took his hand and started s.u.c.k.i.n.g on his finger seductively, completely breaking her character. Arisa reacted late, not expected her teacher to do anything like this. She immediately released her bloodthirsty aura, clearly angry.

Her eyes were filled with possessiveness as a hint of killing intent came out of her, surprising Serah. Rayne didn't react to any of this, letting the woman do what she wanted with his hand without really getting why she did this, he didn't feel any danger from her or from Arisa so he didn't care much.

" Well girl, I didn't think you were this aggressive, blood city really changed you."

Serah returned to her cold look, also releasing her aura.

" He is mine, please let go of his hand."

" You will definitely need help to nurture him, you could work until exhaustion to buy the pills that he need or you could simply lend him to me a few days every month."

Arisa immediately calmed down, if it was for Rayne's sake she was ready to endure anything but this... it was still hard to accept.

" Teacher, weren't you a v.i.r.g.i.n? Since when did you start stealing husbands?"

" Husband?"

Rayne heard a word that he didn't know so he questioned it like always but this time it worked against Arisa. Serah giggled a little before looking at Rayne.

" You claim him but he doesn't seem to know what you mean, it's not good to trick others my dear student."

Arisa ignored her and explained the word to Rayne, hopping to get some back up.

" A husband and wife is a man and a woman that plan of living the rest of their life with each other. They pledged under heaven to love and help each other until their death."

" Then Arisa is my wife right? But I though you wanted to hide our relation from others."

His lack of common sense confused him so he decided to leave everything to Arisa.

" Serah is different, you can't tell anyone else."

" Are you two forgetting me? I don't care if you are husband and wife, I am just asking for a few nights a month in exchange for everything you will ever need."

Arisa clearly was against it but she really needed her teacher's help.

" Can't you find someone else?"

She tried her last card.

" It has to be him, when I saw him I knew that he was the partner that I was looking for my entire life."

Although her heart ached Arisa finally gave in, it would be impossible to find another alchemist that would help them, at least not someone at her level. Rayne stood silent, not knowing what was going on.
