Unfortunate Romance

Chapter 7 - Captivating Melody

Feng Ting rolled her eyes. "Why should I apologize? I merely came here to meet my uncle. It's you three who came looking for trouble."

She stretched. "But now that I think of it, I should settle some debts with you tonight." She smiled wryly. "Gu Tianyu, back then, you rejected me Song Xia Ying because of her higher standing in the Song family and her talent in music. I understand that, and now, frankly, I don't care. But you provoked me today, so I will comply with your wishes."

Feng Ting strode toward the piano, tying up her hair into a high ponytail. People stepped aside, making way for her. Her black hair swung slightly as she walked, c.a.r.e.s.sing the delicate arc of her neck.

The fairy looked like a goddess going to war.

A small crowd gathered around, interested in the scene.

She settled herself in front of the grand piano, tracing the pristine white keys with a finger. It was a while since she touched one.

In her past life, she was required to master at least one instrument. Violin. But she also learned to play the piano out of necessity. The number of pieces she knew could be counted in one hand.

She slid her eyes lazily to the trio radiating animosity and smugness, before focusing on the space before her.

In distant memory, a figure sat before a piano, fingers flickering on the keys while she sat by the side with a violin. The harmony of piano and violin, such a bitter memory of the past.

Feng Ting stretched out two fingers, striking a bold chord. The sound filled her heart, striking at a locked c.h.e.s.t of memories. For you, she thought.

Then, it was like she transformed into another person.

Her gaze turned gentle as her fingers began to dance on the keys. The smoothing rippling melody of Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu filled the air. A sense of harmony overcame the atmosphere.

She closed her eyes as the music grew soft, her fingers slowing down. Her figure swung slightly as the rolling notes echoed along.

The crowd had hushed, watching the ethereal maiden lost in the music. Even though many didn't understand music, they were entranced by the sounds and the beauty making them.

Song Xia Ying gnashed her teeth. When did this wrench get so good at playing the piano? She saw the audience which was practically hypnotized by the music. She glared at Tang Liqin. Why had she suggested that the wrench perform?

Her fists clenched. She doubted that she could even duplicate such a performance. Although it wasn't perfect, there was a mesmerizing quality to it.

She glanced at Gu Tianyu whose eyes were trained on the girl at the piano. Entranced, like everyone else.

Song Xia Ying's gaze turned gloomy.

Tang Liqin shrunk under Song Xia Ying's gaze. Why was she blaming her now? She didn't oppose earlier, basically soundlessly agreed to the plan. Her gaze turned complicated as she watched the girl performing.

Feng Ting loosened a breath at the decrescendo, her fingers skimming the keys gently as the song came to an end.

Around her, the crowd, wavered, suddenly released from the spell. Light applause rang out.

"Beautiful, a nice performance!"

"Strange, it wasn't perfect, but why was it so captivating? Was it because of the emotional sense?"

"Who cares? This is definitely the best performance tonight."

Feng Ting's hands rested above the keys, her posture relaxing. She glanced at the trio, one dazed and two with pissed off glares.

She waved as she walked past. "I'm leaving now. Although I didn't study much piano in college, I think the performance was mediocre, but decent enough don't you think?"

Song Xia Ying wanted to smash a table as she watched the figure disappear out the exit. Her face burned in anger and humiliation. Tang Liqin lowered her head, turning away from the mocking glances sent her way.

Gu Tianyu gave Song Xia Ying's eyes a complicated look, before saying gently, "Xia Ying, I'll send you home." Song Xia Ying tightly grasp his hand, and nodded. The three left the gala.

At another table, a beautiful woman laughed lightly as she swirled the wine in her glass. One side of the face unmasked, revealing a stunning countenance that truly fit the label of bringing the downfall of countries. Red lips curled into a cheshire cat smile. Her eyes followed the swirling red in her hand, tinted in emotion.

"Junior sister of mine is so cute. This piece sure brings back memories."

The night wind ruffled the hair of a masked man on the balcony, leaning against the doors. His heart thumped from the image of the girl on the piano, swaying to the ethereal music. Her figure. Her attitude. Her words, imprinted in his mind.

He made a call. "Look up Song Feng Ting for me."
