A Villainess's Struggles

Chapter 55 - The Villainess Takes the Role

"We're doing a play for the upcoming Halloween Performance Day?" I asked.

The Halloween Performance Day is an annual event that happens on October 31st in Nobleton Middle School. Every class is required to present some sort of performance. This day is meant to be a fun day for our school. The 'funny' part is that most of the students aren't looking forward to this day.

"That's right. A play," May repeated.

"And our class is actually doing it...?" I continued.

"Mhm..." She nodded.

"By any chance, do you know what play we're doing?" I asked.

"Rapunzel!" May smiled.

If I remember correctly, Rapunzel was about the girl with extremely long hair and there was this evil witch...

"Also we'll be choosing our roles today. I hope Gabrielle ends up as the witch since the role suits her a lot" May laughed.

"Hahahaha... Who knows, she might..." I replied.

~~~~~
"We'll start by choosing our main actors," said Henry as he stood in front of the chalkboard.
We were picking roles by volunteering first. Since Henry and Allen are class presidents, they had to lead the class.
"Does anyone want to be Rapunzel?" Henry asked.
Not a single person rose their hand up. As if anyone would want to be Rapun--
"I'll do it," a voice came from the seat next to me.
M-May?!
"Your name is May if I remember correctly?" Henry said.
"That's right" May replied.
Henry wrote May's name on the board as he moved on to the next role.
"Anyone interested in being the prince?" Henry asked.
This time, there were quite a few hands. Why? All these boys wanted to make contact with May.
Henry was a bit confused as he didn't know who to pick. He looked over to where Allen was standing but neither of them could make a decision.
"We'll be drawing lots. Every boy in the class must participate" Henry suddenly announced.
Drawing lots? Ha. That brings back lots of horrible memories.
Naturally, Henry and Allen had to participate in the drawing too. After every boy got a piece of paper, they all opened it at the same time.
"Woah!" Someone shouted really loud.
I looked towards the direction of where the voice came from.
"Hahahaha..." I sighed.
"Kyle got the prince role!" yelled out one of the girls who is part of Gabrielle's group.
As usual, May has no expression when things like this happen.
"A-Are you excited or anything?" I said to May.
"Hm? Sure? It doesn't really matter who acts as the prince. In the end, they're all the same" May replied.
Wow. I am shocked. I knew that May wasn't a huge fan of the handsome trio-well it's a group of four now but the fact that she just looked at them as normal people...!
"Then what's your ideal type?" I asked not expecting an answer.
"I want someone who loves me for who I am. They don't need to be handsome or popular. All I want is true love," May blushed.
"...Hypocrite..." I mumbled.
"Hm?" She said with a smile that hid daggers behind them.
"It's nothing..." I responded.
As each role was selected, we finally landed on the witch role. Of course, no one volunteered for this role. Nobody wants to act out this role as they would get rumours circulating around about them.
Gabrielle stood up and said, "I volunteer Natalie Coldwell. This role suits her perfectly."
Are you looking for a fight?!
Before I could say a word, May responded to Gabrielle.
"Gabrielle, no one suits this role more than you. I believe that you'll be able to act as the witch perfectly. You have my support" May smiled.
"Huh?! Come at me you bi-"
"Stop right there. If you curse, I'll file a complaint to the teachers about an unrespectful student in this class" Henry interrupted.
Gabrielle continued glaring at May and me as she sat back down.
"Let's just scrap the role of the witch then. We can just change the plotline" Allen suggested.
"Put me as the witch instead," May said.
"Huh?" I opened my mouth in shock.
What about your fake gentle lady act?
"Our play shouldn't be ruined just because someone doesn't want to take this one role. I'll do it if no one wants to" May smiled as she acted frail.
Talent. Still keeping up this nice lady act. But...
"Forget what she said. Give me the witch role" I said.
This time, Henry and Allen looked at me confused as Gabrielle yelled out "Eh?!"
"What are you doing?" May whispered to me.
"Think of it as me repaying my debt to you. You helped me earlier, so I'll help you back. We're friends right?" I whispered back.
"F-Friends?" She mumbled and looked away.
"I know you want to keep your gentle lady act so I'll take the witch role. I've never heard of a lady who acts as a witch" I said.
"What about you?" May asked.
"I have plenty of rumours going around about me already. No big deal if even more come" I laughed as I crossed my arms.
"Oh yeah... one popular rumour is... the devil girl with the slanted eyes" She muttered.
"Devil-What?" I asked.
"Nevermind. You're better off not knowing" May smiled.
"Are you sure, Natalie?" Allen asked.
"Don't worry, just write my name for it" I responded.
"I'm doing backstage stuff but I can do the role for you" Allen frowned.
"That does not sound like a great idea. Don't worry, it's just a role" I said.
Allen as an evil being? That will never happen on my watch. Speaking of Allen, I wonder what happened after I left the other day. I'm so curious...
"Well then, if you insist" Allen sighed.
Henry wrote my name next to the word "Witch." Now it just looks like he wrote "Witch Natalie" on the board.
Ouch...
"Um, Natalie?" May asked.
"Yes?" I answered.
"T-Tha..nk..you... Nevermind! It's nothing! Let's go to our next class now" May said.
Uh... Huh? What did she want to say?
