Blood Emperor's Lazy Doctor [Hiatus]

Chapter 21 - Fuel added to a burning heart.

Eight days had quickly passed. The after effects of the torrential rain were still apparent, but had cleared enough for herbalist and miners work to start once more. Shops were relieved. Losing business for many days, all were dangling close to the cliff. Even those not related to forest work were sending silent prayers.

But none of this mattered much to a small courtyard lost in wood. Forbearing Bygone was the name, despite the sign which long returned to dust. Behind those frames, two figures lay harmoniously beneath worn sheets.

The man was large and lengthy, his figure which was too big, hung slightly off the small narrow bed. If laying flat, his back to earth, his nose to heaven would leave just enough room for spread arms. Yet his frame curled to the side as his arms wrapped around a bump in the sheets. Nestled securely inside his powerful arms was a small bun. A little girl sleeping peacefully. Trickling across the girl's face was a tender smile. One look was enough to show genuine tranquility.

Spending her days in comfort, being fed bountiful meals, Hong Luo's frame hadn't gained much meat but her color certainly looked healthier. Those wan cheeks which inspired pity had gained a healthy dye of pink.

Currently the little girl was sleeping peacefully under the covers. The days were cold, and the courtyard wasn't equipped with underground heating. But that didn't seem to phase her, since having her own convenience source of heat, her nights were spent in warmth without fear of chill.

This convenient source of heat was none other then Nuyun. The man had claimed dominance over her bed, refusing to sleep else where.

Why was this?

Well with a self righteous air, full of pomp and stubbornness he claimed. "This is for your own good." His eyes even shined with full confidence, proclaiming he had all the right in the world to claim those words.

Apparently she wasn't reliable. He didn't trust her at all! Was she such a child that she can't sleep on her own? That would get sick without protection? That she had to be force fed DAILY?! Ah, she was so aggrieved, and just wanted to sleep. But because she was too lazy to argue she just let him do as he pleased. Ai, at least she wasn't cold.

In truth, it was no wonder this excuse passed her bar without suspicion. Her body was the only evidence needed to prove a point. So, without much needed cajoling, Nuyun managed to get his way, obtaining the warmth he had been working for.

This pleased the man so his mood has been very good. But that didn't stop him from gaining a few inches after the mile. Feeding his little rabbit to fatten up would only increase the warmth given. Not feeling wrong in his actions in the least, despite the little fellow's aggrieved glances.

Pulling at the skin tight cheeks, his voice hoarse from sleep, "Breakfast will be done soon, be good and wake up."

The little fellow mumbled and grumbled but didn't budge. A look of helplessness flashed in his eyes as he left the bed, not forgetting to tuck her back in.

Once the man left the room, a light flew out of the bead in her forehead. The child that floated in the air, shadow boxed the empty space towards the door.

"Damn tofu eater begone! If you weren't so scary this mighty one would beat your tooshie red and sore!" Sadly these were just his thoughts, he hadn't the guts to voice them aloud, else the demon catch wind.

The man may seem docile and harmless in front of mistress, but he can't fool this mighty one! A blood soaked man coincidentally shows up out of who knows where. Once treated, acting like a loyal dog, not harmful in the least? No! He ain't buying it. This most definitely is a scam, and only my silly mistress would be stupid enough to buy it!

Redirecting his gaze. Ai, how is that his mistress would always attract scary men? Not only were they all strong, but they never regarded his mistress' feelings. He looked down at his sleeping mistress and sighed. Least this one hasn't done anything too bad yet. He hopes that it stays that way. His mistress' view on men is already bad. At this rate his mistress might resort to women...

He scratched his little head, and beat it repeatedly. NO! I refuse to let my mistress go to the dark side! He already had his hands full with men, he didn't need women added to the mix!

His mind flashed with a figure for but a second, causing his little brows to wrinkle, and another head scratch to begin. AH! How could he even think of that person?! His little mind was filled with anger every time she snubbed him. That woman was the first to openly pursue his mistress. Often bending the knee like some damn knight, proclaiming she looked better on that stupid white horse than any man. So shameless!

After a good beating, he went to wake his mistress. She wasn't cooperative at first, not until he pulled out that vile again. Poor Little Soul had his cheeks squeezed once more. Ai, he sacrifices so much! He shed silent tears until she finished her tantrum.

"Why are you waking me up so early?" She yawned. She sat up with her arms and legs crossed, but those misty eyes looked ready to roll back into the sheets.

Rubbing his sore cheeks he responds halfheartedly. "Little Soul finished the inspection."

Her eyes shined as she pulled the little one into her arms and fell beneath the sheets once more. She was too wrapped up in the thought of not moving, she hadn't noticed the strangeness in Little Soul's eyes. They had flashed with reluctance and fear which was sadly missed.

"What are we waiting for? Give your mistress a tour!" And without waiting for him, her spirit went inside her space.

Helplessly Little Soul shook his head and followed the dog, disappearing once more into the bead behind her forehead.

The sights hadn't changed much, besides the cut back path connecting through the forest of trees, all was well. Glancing at this, Hong Luo nodded as she waited for Little Soul.

The little fellow walked along the guardrails. He bit his bottom lip, he was having trouble getting the words out. Yet he relented and pointed to the water. His voice trembled when he said, "Mistress they're all dead."

Not expecting this at all, her smile instantly vanished. She quickly ran to the guardrails and look down, her eyes misted over as she spoke with great difficulty.

"So they're... phantom spirits?" Looking to Little Soul for confirmation, with his nod, she fell to her knees.

She hadn't expected this news.

Her mind had collapsed.

Tears endlessly fell from her eyes.

"No wonder, no wonder..." She repeated this many times aloud, her voice choking. It was no wonder they hadn't responded to her in this time.

Don't look at how Hong Luo was a famous doctor. How she had saved thousands. How the medical community all had her in their eyes. Her personality was reserved, interacting with people was very difficult for her if they weren't her patients, often acting strangely, causing odd looks and glances. Diminishing her already low self esteem which nobody knew a wink of. You have to know, it was rare for her to find those she could be herself with.

Since this was the case, most souls she had closeness with were spirit beast. All the beast under her she considered friends. She spoke with them, cared for them, and even sheltered those who were close to extinction. In all these years she hadn't felt love, but what she felt for those was the closest she'd ever come.

Her heart was breaking, and Little Soul's was breaking along with her. He knew how much she cared. He knew how kind she was underneath it all, which was the reason he hadn't wished to speak. Unable to take her pain upon himself, Little Soul gently strokes her back.

His voice hoarse from holding back the tears, "Mistress, they wouldn't want you to cry. Maybe.." He choked and his words fell into a whisper. "maybe there's hope."

He honestly didn't believe his own words. He just didn't want his mistress to be sad anymore. Maybe, even with falsity, she could get passed this.

How could she not know Little Soul's purpose? But she knew more then anyone what phantom spirits entailed. Just as the name implies, they were but phantoms imprinted in time moments before death. How can she revive a spirit that can't even be called a spirit? It would be different if the spirit itself was here, but a phantom? You'd have better luck catching a ghost!

She slammed her fist into the ground. Being a spirit, this action caused no harm and accomplish nothing, yet she kept repeating it.

Why?

Because she killed them! She killed her friends! How can she not be angry? How can she not? Just how? Would she even be a person if not?

A self deprecated smile graced her lips. In a moment of folly, a moment of impulse, she blew herself up to take her killer with her. She hadn't thought about the ones in her space. All of which was on her mind, was for once taking a small piece of revenge.

And what did it get her?

IT GOT HER FRIENDS KILLED!

What in the world was she even thinking?

She wasn't that's what!

This was why she never even considered revenge an option. It pulls those around you into the darkness, and you have to accept the blood of those on your hands.

She curled up into a ball as her spirit continued to weep.

What she failed to consider was that even if she didn't act, what was to say when she died by fire, would the ones in her space still live?

Ironically if this thought did past through her mind, she'd still blame herself. Not for taking revenge but not having the consideration to brave the fire. At least long enough to release her friends from the fate she herself was facing.

A few minutes past she stood up. With a smooth motion of her hands, she wiped away the tears. A sigh escaped her lips as a smile slowly curved.

She looked to Little Soul, her face not at all showing any trace of sadness. "Let's continue."

Little Soul pursed his lips and took the lead as they walked off. His small hands were caught in a tight fist. As he expected, his mistress was too cruel to herself. That look in her eyes, that near perfect facade. How could he not know what that meant? Now there was one more to weigh her down. One more knife. One more bloody scar. One more piece of firewood to a burning heart.

Little Soul's words drowned in stomach acid. All he could do was watch, his words could do nothing. So as always, by her side, this little fellow will hold the sky. Even if words of thanks grace deaf ears.

And so the two continued their walk and spoke on the way, as nothing had ever happened.

. . .

Coming to an open field, her mouth was agape. What happened to all my buildings? She had many buildings which were filled with items from rare treasures to odd trinkets found in the market. Even her medical house had vanished from sight. And what was it in their place. Just what was up with all these strange mounds which weren't here before? She looked to Little Soul in confusion. Which the little fellow responded with a odd look.

Her eyes returned to those strange mounds, and gasped audibly. Don't tell me I have to take up the profession of piracy and go treasure hunting? No this idea was absurd. Her mind had just taken a wrong turn, she was sure of it!

Yet Little Soul had to start up his profession of popping bubbles and turn this absurdity into reality. "Mistress all the buildings were buried." His voice sounded embarrassed as he spoke. But of course he was! He himself was still baffled.

"The only building that survived the mass burial is the combat tower. Little Soul tried to dig but without essence flowing through the air, Little Souls in a bind." He sighed.

Snapping out of her daze, Hong Luo sighed as well, but a strange look filters across her face. "What do you mean there's no essence?" Without essence how could there be life in this space?

"The essence has been frozen, only the plants have access to its resources." Little Soul responded.

"Frozen?" She looked around. How was it frozen?

Little Soul helplessly shook his head. "Mistress have you forgotten? The essence won't flow freely until the space recognizes its master. Even though mistress has a soul connection, the space hasn't gained a body connection, which can't happen until mistress starts cultivating."

Enlightened she smacked her head. Of course how could she have forgotten such a thing? She really has become muddle headed.

She looked to Little Soul, and asked a little nervously, "Okay then what about my herb garden? I already handed over the canceler, how's it look inside?"

Again another strange look appeared on the little fellows face. A foreboding feeling rose up in her gut as the fellow dug into his pocket, dropping the contents in her palm. Eight colorful seeds sat pristinely in place.

"Besides a few seeds Little Soul found, the rest of the herb were ripped to pieces. I believe the space distortion caused some explosion to invade. Ultimately causing this."

Hong Luo's face darkened, as she lamented. What wasn't wrong with her space? It's now turned into a glorified storage shed that got wiped clean by a fire! Ah... she was so sad...

As if sensing her mood, Little Soul quickly tries to remedy the situation.

"But mistress, even though the high herb section of the garden was cleared, the vegetable, fruit, and tea plantations were all fine. Even your 'unusual' plant collection survived!" As soon as he reached the last bit, he gained confidence with his words.

And to respond to that confidence, the look on his mistress' face had indeed brightened. This change made Little Soul sigh in relief.

Hong Luo was quite easy to please, knowing not everything was destroyed made her mood much better. Her mood increased more when she heard that last bit. Her 'unusual' plants, as Little Soul had so kindly stated, were a strange hobby she had gained. Most of those plants were used to make her weird concoctions, including that vile of potion that would cause even pigs to turn way their heads and run.
