Messing with his beard. Sometimes pulling and other times his fingers slid through. Doctor Wu continued this motion for many minutes as he watched the little girl sleep. His thoughts were deep as his eyes viewed every inch. Creasing his brows at times, then sighing at other times.

Without even looking beneath cloth, he knew her body wasn't in the best of shape. Years of maltreatment has caused her skin to be dry and cracked in places, while in other places, bones were more visible than muscle. Even though recently Hong Luo has had an improvement in life style, the past damage will take more than two weeks to cure.

Pulling her sleeve elbow high, he paused. Those old eyes turn cold as his jade hands gently move across her bony arms. Many scars littered that pale skin, with varied stages of age and healing.

Turning her palm face up, he saw many callouses along with pin sized spots on her finger tips. His face darkened, he pulled out another bottle from his ring and began applying it to both her hands. Once done he had contemplated doing the same to her arms, but decided against it for now.

Recovering her arms and hands, he walked off grabbing a quilt to cover her small body. Once again he sat still watching over her.

In deep sleep Hong Luo was yet again dreaming of the past.

Sun was high in the sky, the fluffy clouds were traveling to distances unknown. A murky mist seemed to hang in the air, obscuring certain parts of the landscape. But what could be made out was a little girl dressed in pink as she ran through the wooden path. Her pink gown had traces of dirt, prickly leaves sticking near the bottom hems. Within her arms, a golden eagle laid unconscious. She had a tense look within those young eyes of hers as she ran her small feet rugged.

"Mommy daddy, help help!" Her young voice came out in a hurry. It was hoarse from fatigue with heavy concern and panic.

Faster than his wife, Hong Bao had rushed from their home and out after his daughter.

The abode was small, barely able to accommodate the family of three. Having but three separate rooms. One room for sleeping, which the family of three all laid as one. The next room held kitchen wear, along with hunting gear, baskets for gathering, and worn out shoes with many years of wear. The last room was the dinning room mixed with many crates of preserved food, sowing needles, and emergency medicine.

It wasn't the most presently home, but it was indeed a home. It left quite the impression on the little girl, seeing as how the obscuring mist touch not a single corner.

Scooping his darling daughter in his arms, Bao's doting voice came out. "Luo'r what is wrong, are you hurt? Tell daddy and daddy will make it all better." One hand under her small bottom, while the other gently stroked her hair lovingly.

Wriggling in his arms Luo'r shook her head. "I'm fine, but the little birdy isn't. Daddy please help little birdy, little birdy isn't waking up!"

Noticing the bundle within his daughter's arms, he sets her down gently then takes a look.

A baby golden eagle was what now laid in his large palms. It was indeed unconscious as its breath was light. From the looks of it the little babe had fallen from its first flight, injuring his wings and still developing body.

Just as Hong Bao was to agree to his darling daughter, his wife's voice came in stern waves from behind. "No not again, are you planning on spoiling her rotten? How many animals is it this time, hmm? Does she plan to save the whole forest? Bao toss the filthy thing to the bush and bring Luo inside."

A helpless look flashed in his eyes as he saw his darling daughter begin to panic. "Mommy mommy, please don't throw little birdy away! Luo Luo promises last. This last! Last last last last LAST! Please mommy!"

Luo'r was shaking her head fiercely enough to make herself dizzy. The tears that hung on the corners of her eyes, flung every which way as she kept with this motion.

"Now Luo, be good, you can't always have what you want. That thing is not like small animals you have ask to save. It's a wild creature that is very dangerous. Understand mommy's concerns and be good." Her voice was level and remained stern. Unlike her husband, Xu Yue was not as easy, she wouldn't spoil Luo but teach her harshly. Luo'r knew her mother was like this but she was still stubborn.

She took nervous steps back as her little bottom fell and kissed dirt. Her body was trembling, refusing to agree to her mother. "Mommy little birdy lives, don't wanna die. Don't wanna die.... Mommy please..."

She had begun hiccuping on her tears as her breathing became hoarse and unsteady. Hong Bao panicked and looked to his wife. The looks in their eyes and expressions on their faces were unknown. The obscuring mist hand swallowed all but the grass on the ground and few people in tow.

Xu Yue picked up her daughter stroking her back to calm, a crisp sound to her voice as she spoke. "Is this truly the last time? You can't go back on your words or no one will trust you again. Once spoken herds of demons can't break the oath."

Luo looked at her mother confused.

Xu Yue patiently continued with a sharp look in her eyes. "When you spill water what happens?"

"You become wet."

"And what else?"

"You clean up. clean up so can't be sick."

Xu Yue tilted her head as her eyes narrow. "But what happens to the water?"

Luo didn't know how to respond, her tiny brows wrinkled as she thought. "It gets muddy, then dirty, can't drink no more."

"Can you put the water back in the cup?"

Luo shook her head, but her mother responded in a stern voice. "Use your words!"

"No, can't."

Xu Yue smiled and gently moved her hand to stroke her head instead of back. "Can you put words back in your mouth?"

Luo shook her head, but then quickly changed and said "No."

But after thinking about it can't she write on the paper then eat the paper? She kept those thoughts inside, or mommy would yell and scold!

Looking at her mother with watery eyes, "Mommy save little birdy..."

Hong Bao tapped his wife's shoulder, and Xu Yue sighed in helplessness. "Fine fine but there is no next time. If you want to save more lives you have to be the one to do it, understand?"

Luo's eyes brighten up and hugged her mother's neck, kissing her check leaving many trails of saliva.

"Luo Luo knows. Luo Luo will become big doctor, and save everyone!" She said with a voice full of innocence and naivety.

Xu Yue helplessly shook her head, taking it as a child's words. Changing the subject she asks her daughter teasingly. "Why do you call every thing little? Calling small creatures little is understandable but why must you even call the pomegranate tree Little Pom? It's much bigger than you." She tapped her little nose as she finished.

With a thought Luo responds. "It's cute! Little is cute, so little is little and cute is cute!"

Both wife and husband shook their heads as they lead their daughter off.

Luo was very happy, yet that happiness did not last long as her mother stopped abruptly. Confused Luo looked forward and wailed in shook and she gripped her mother's neck tightly.

In front of her, a land of dead was soaking the small traces of moonlight that made way though thick branches of a monolithic banyan tree. Many bodies littered the withered grass lands, as mutated rats skitter around. One making its way below scaring Luo into crying for her mother and father.

Not getting any respond she looks to her father with hope, only to be met with another nightmarish sight. Her father that was just well a moment ago, was now a b.a.r.e boned skeleton looking her way with an eerie tilt in his head.

Screaming aloud Luo cries. "Mommy mommy save me save me!"

When she looked to her mother, she nearly leaped from her arms in horror, falling to the ground in a heavy thump. She didn't have time to care if it hurt or not she just had to get away! Why was her mother and father skeletons?

Why?

WHY?!

Why....

Why was she all alone?

As she was crawling away on her hands and knees, something grabs her ankle. She looked back and one of the dead had a tight grip, and heavily bit down on her leg. She screamed out in extreme pain and terror.

Her leg was being gnawed at, as she kicked and struggled. She tried and tried to break free but with her paltry strength she had no hope escape.

Her breath became uneven as she gasped for air. She didn't know what was worse, the pain in her leg, the pain in her heart, or the pain in her throat as she continued her hopeless struggled.

Why...

This was all that came out of her mouth as she struggled within this nightmare. Screaming aloud. But suddenly it all vanished. Her screaming had stopped as a strange sight had now replaced the nightmarish lull.

The monolithic Banyan tree had vanished, along with those corpses. Obscuring all, even the ground beneath, the mist waded out in all directions. A white abyss now lay b.a.r.e.

Within this white world, on the ground a small child was curled up in a ball, shaking, trembling. Standing above her, a tall girl whom wore tattled cloth, her eyes cold, her expression placid as her hair rained down in streams. She had injuries all over her body, including an oddly familiar bite mark on her left ankle.

She straddled the child and forced her to look up. Staring straight in her eyes, the child's eyes reflected horror and shock. But before the child could speak, the tall girl smiled, brought the child to her arms and spoke two sentences.

"I'm sorry."

"Thank you."
